BBC News today reports the sentencing of Kevin McGirr, a 40-year-old man who pleaded guilty to charges of stealing a rare first edition copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. McGirr took the book–worth approximately £6,000 or about $9,800 US–from the Creative Art Gallery in Woodstock, Oxfordshire back in October. The book was found “wrapped in a plastic bag outside a Boots store in Abingdon on 15 November”.

Ordered at Banbury Magistrates’ Court to pay both £250 compensation and £400 in legal costs, Kevin McGirr has been jailed for six weeks. Read the full article at this link on the BBC News website.

I can't believe that guy stole it though.....tsk, tsk!!!!Avatar ImageRubeusHagrid says: @emmawatsonfan13-- I have a British copy too, though i live in the US. i like the font, and Mary GrandPre's illustrations better, though...But there's something ..for-want-of-a-better-word, magical, about the British, especially Book One's cover art, and the simplicity of the font, chapter headings, etc. WOW, i'm sorry for that random speech... ;PAvatar ImageMadgerock says: I wonder if it as one of the 500 actual first editions that went to libraries throughout the UK or if it was one of the 1000 second printings of the first edition. It would definately affect the value Avatar Imageloonyquibblergirl says: How could he?! That's the worst thing I've heard yet.Avatar Imagealexweasley12 says: wth is wrong with this guy.....? whats the diference between british and us anyways ?!Avatar ImageFelipe_Q says: Really bad that he robbed it... And (c), reading between the lines, I wonder if he wasn't very bright.Avatar ImageDisneyDarling says: poor dude!!! he gets jailed for showing apprecation to hpAvatar ImageDisneyDarling says: poor dude!!! he gets jailed for showing apprecation to hpAvatar Imagekyrstalkris says: The Harry Potter series shouldn't be causing crimes! Oh well, you can't do anything about it! But, what do they mean by first edition . . . ? Like it was the first one to be printed? Or before all the edits and stuff? $10,000! That's a lot of money! And whoever left it in the front of a boots store must be kicking themselves now! But, how do they know it's the first edition? Would someone please kindly explain? Like owl it to me on MyLeaky? Thank you if you can contribute to my knowledge! :DAvatar ImageValeria-Johanna says: kyrstalkris, it may be, as Madgerock suggests, one of the small first printing. (Bloomsbury didn't realise quite how popular it was going to be!) I think there may have been some corrections, too, when they re-printed. You can tell when you've got the first edition of a book from information on the left hand page at the start - the sequences of numbers etc. There are websites that explain about this stuff. Some people get very excited about it! Possibly more excited than by actually reading the books!Avatar ImageMiss.Weasley says: wondering if he's a hardcore fan or just a money concerned lunatic? these special editions belong to JKR and us, devoted fans. They shouldn't be owned by just one person (unless JK)!Avatar Imageazaadpotter says: Gosh the kind of people nowadays
