For my money, Severus Snape is easily the most complex, interesting and memorable character in the whole HP canon. So I sadly but respectfully raise a glass of firewhiskey to the memory of a great wizard who would have been a mere 51 yesterday, had he survived his precarious position as Voldemort’s supposed right-hand man (although he would probably have preferred not to have his tormented existence drawn out any longer than was absolutely necessary to ensure the Dark Lord’s fall). Both the wizarding and the literary world owe him a large karmic debt, so we can hope at least that his next incarnation is destined to be a happier one!
