In a followup to Leaky's September 20th news that Warner Bros. would cease shipment of all eight "Harry Potter" films on BluRay and DVD starting December 29th, Deadline.com has posted a snippet containing further information about the decision. They report:
"[Warner Bros. will stop] shipping all Harry Potter theatrical film titles (including Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows™ – Part 2, and Harry Potter: The Complete 8-Film Collection) as of December 29, 2011 (moratorium does not include digital – Electronic Sell-Through & VOD – or games).
This means that following the November 11th (December 2nd in the UK) release of these two new editions, fans of the series will have little over one month to purchase their copy of the eight film collection. Fans, however, will still be able to purchase digital copies of the films through their preferred online medium.

So. . . they aren’t going to ship any more, but are they going to pull the movies, in whatever version, are already on store shelvs or available from amazon or wherever? This just really doesn’t make sense to me. And I wondered the same thing about the ultimate versions of the movies I don’t have. Are they going to finish putting those out, or am I just going to have half of the movies in that format and the other half as whatever they are now putting out.
Speaking of putting out, I’m a bit put out at Warner Bros. I know they are in the business of making money, but it seems silly to not keep selling something when people are willing to buy.

When Disney has done this, it means retailers cannot get anymore when the finish selling their stock. If WB follows the same pattern, then the DVDs & Blu-Rays will still be available after the 1st of the year.

The Digital Bits (http://www.thedigitalbits.com) talked to WB’s Jeff Baker. They stated “…even though all existing Blu-ray and DVD releases of the Potter films will no longer be shipped to retailers after that date, the studio still expects that enough existing inventory will remain to meet any lingering demand for the titles until well into 2012.” The moratorium should last 12-18 months, not Disney’s 5-10 years. The DH Ultimate Collector’s Editions will be released at that time.

Would love it if WB would clarify about the Ultimate Editions. I am unemployed right now and can’t afford to buy them all and frankly was waiting for the mega set that was rumored to be coming out next year. I think that WB should really give the fans a little more info so that we have a clear picture of what’s going on with the movies.
On the bright side, maybe Hank Green will release a “Howler 2” for us over it… One can hope. :)
