No Truth to PublishAmerica's J.K. Rowling Claim

J.K. Rowling's spokesman has denied claims made by the publishing company, PublishAmerica, which promised to bring attention to their client's books in a meeting with Ms. Rowling.
According to the AP, PublishAmerica asked writers to submit 50-100 word notes about their work and pay $49 so that a delegation would meet with her in Edinburgh and present their books.
Rowling spokesman Mark Hutchinson said Tuesday that the claim was "completely false" and promised "appropriate action." PublishAmerica, based in Frederick, Md., has long been cited by industry watchdogs for allegedly deceiving authors.

From their standpoint it probably isn’t a lie; they intend on “presenting” submissions to JKR, even if that requires stalking her and ambushing her with them any chance they get to corner her. Whether she actually reads any of them is JKR’s own business; even if she tosses them straight in the trash the publishing company has fulfilled their end of it.

It seems like everybody wants to take advantage of Ms. Rowling’s well earned fame… Some don’t even care that they might be acting against the law and infringing some rights… haven’t they never heard about intellectual property rights?

This is horrible. I hope that not many people fell for this, but they probably did. I’m glad that JKR tries to put a stop to scammers where it concerns her fans.

Publish America is a notorious reverse vanity press that presents itself as a serious publisher, when it in fact does absolutely nothing a legitimate publisher would do. All of their revenue comes not from book sales to the public, but from the authors they have signed under contract. They charge fees for everything, from “editing” the submitted manuscript (i.e. having some office drone run the work through a spell checker) to this nonsense of making presentations to famous authors.
JK Rowling is not even the first this has happened to, Stephen King, Nora Roberts and several other big name writers have had their names hijacked by this company.
