On J. K. Rowling’s new website, Ms. Rowling confirms that the Harry Potter Encyclopedia is still in the works on the FAQ section of the site:

For a long time I have been promising an encyclopaedia of Harry’s world, and I have started work on this now ’ some of it forms the new content in Pottermore. It is likely to be a time-consuming job, but when finished I shall donate all royalties to charity.

Many thanks to Catherine and Max for owling!

Avatar Imagelmauro says: it is totally like she read my mind :) cause i was just thinking about this Avatar ImageLunaLuver says: Thats it!?! She's just started work on the book! Why has she waited so long! This would have been a much better welcome than her new book. I have to say I am disappointed she doesnt have it at least completed, waiting for the right time to release it. =(Avatar ImageBudman says: this is going to be great.Avatar Imagemarymackie says: THAT'S what I'm talkin' about!!! It's been a long time coming, but at least we know it's in the works. I'll read the new book that's out in September, but I believe JK will always be known for Harry Potter, and anything that she can add to what we already know will be icing on the cake.Avatar Imageratorr2 says: And millions of fans rejoice. Avatar ImageFeorge says: Wow, LunaLuver, someone's looking a gift horse in the mouth. Entitled much?Avatar Imagelovelle says: Well, best of luck to you JK! I know that writing an Encyclopedia is awfully hard work! (even though I haven't written one)Avatar ImageLunaLuver says: @Feorge: Entitled to my own opinion, yes. Wishing 'The Scottish Book' was coming out sooner, yes. Jo said she was working on it in many interviews right after DH came out, that was five years ago! All Potter fans would be happier to hear that this was coming out in September instead of her other book. Avatar Imagemoglet says: You're a bit late with this news, I found it on her site on the day you reported that her revamped site had opened and shared it in the Hufflepuff Common room, we were all very pleased. It is great news that she is working on the encyclopaedia now, some of us had wondered if she had decided to only put all the extra content on Pottermore, so I'm very happy that we will get a book.Avatar Imagezonkoltd says: Authors must be entitled to choose their own direction and timings, otherwise the quality of their work will suffer and no one benefits. I see all royalties will be donated to charity. That's going to be a pretty big donation - even if our current government end up taking away 45% in tax. A pity more of our top earners don't follow her lead. Avatar Imageroonwit says: LunaLuver: She doesn't say she has just started on it and she must have done some work on it already given that some of the material is on Pottermore. She has also been clear that the Encyclopaedia would take a long time - she said 19 years (not entirely seriously) in the Pottercast episode which coined the "Scottish Book" name. moglet [ITC!]: Yes, I spotted it early on as well, and I agree this is the first confirmation that the Encyclopaedia is still in progress since we found out about Pottermore which could perhaps have been a replacement for it.Avatar Imageselenialovegood says: I hope she will write the books from the World of Harry Potter like schoolbooks and the like. I can't wait till the Encylopedia is finished and released. I think she started talking about a Harry Potter Encylopedia in 2007?Avatar ImageFleur-de- Lily says: Cool Avatar ImageWant to be a Weasley says: I am very excited to hear and was happy when Moglet shared in the Common Room :-) RE: "All Potter fans would be happier to hear that this was coming out in September instead of her other book." --Not true, I am a Potter fan, and was excited to hear of the new book, curious to see what it is all about. Of course, I will buy the Encyclopedia when it is released, but, I really am ready to enjoy something aside from HP by JKR.Avatar Imageroonwit says: Amanda Emilie: Yes I think she said something about working on it in 2007 or 2008, but I see it as something that might get put aside while she is working on something else, so it could be a few years before it is published, and there may be other books not including The Casual Vacancy that she publishes first.Avatar ImageWON_TWO says: This is old news... GOOD news... but old!Avatar ImageNightPhoenix35 says: I am so happy to hear she is still writing it! I thought Pottermore was going to be a sort of replacement for "the Scottish book." I am definitely willing to wait for this one...wouldn't want to rush a complete encyclopedia :) I wonder how many volumes, because she could probably say more about the books than she actually wrote in them, lol.Avatar ImageLivi22 says: I was so glad to see this on her website about a week ago because I thought that everything was going into Pottermore. I'm not really as bothered about how long it takes now (though I would love it to be soon) because I think we've had quite a lot of new Potter things to be getting along with and we've got The Casual Vacancy to look forward to at any rate. I'm glad that she is hopefully going to publish the encyclopedia though!Avatar Imagehorcruxhunter7 says: Yay! o(^_^o) (o^_^o) (o^_^)o (Does little dance!)Avatar ImageRavenclawmax says: I just cant wait :) I am relatively new to the fandom, so when I became a part of it, I was thrilled to hear of this wonderful idea of an encyclopedia. I read this, and sent it to Leaky, with excitement, but I can understand you guys that have been waiting way longer for this than I, and their frustrations.Avatar ImageTarana says: I would love to read the encyclopedia as much as everybody, but I can understand that Jo wants to take her time to write it. To her, it must often seem like she is rehashing old stuff, and I guess she has a large box (or maybe several) with notes. I saw something like that in a documentary once. I can understand that she wants to create new stories and new characters, and this is just something extra she does to please the fans. And I love her for it ! So, take your time, Jo, but please keep working on it, beside all the other stories you want to tell.Avatar ImageWeenyOwl says: Can't help wondering if she's using the Lexicon as a cheat sheet. But I suppose that would constitute invoking the bad luck associated with literary things Scottish!Avatar Imageroonwit says: WeenyOwl {The Human Deluminator}: She won't use the Lexicon, not just because there might be legal issues with doing so, but mostly because the Encyclopaedia will mostly contain new information that hasn't been revealed before, and so won't be in the Lexicon.Avatar ImageGene L. says: She's finally working on it? Fantastic. By the way, it's so JK Rowling to make it a charity work, brilliant woman.Avatar ImageCatherine says: woot woot!!!!! I so CANT wait! :) at least we have another novel until then!!Avatar Imagemuggle..andproudofit says: Squee!!Avatar ImageFleur-de- Lily says: I can't wait to see her novel!Avatar ImageMagical Arts says: SOOOO COOOOOLLL!!!! OHHH MYY!! .. I love you, Jo. Thank. You. So. Much.Avatar Imagemariakingsford says: whoo hoo, thats great news, i sooo can't wait. :-DAvatar ImageWeenyOwl says: @roonwit, if it's an encyclopedia, isn't the assumption that it will be encyclopedic? Meaning including all the pertinent info, whether it's already generally known or not? Despite her legal wranglings with the guy who compiled the Lexicon, it's undeniable that it's a valuable resource. (I consult it frequently to jog my memory about minor characters and so on.) I don't mean to suggest that JKR would just cut and paste, but she could easily use it as a handy reference to save time, and not have the results be in any way obvious enough to warrant a lawsuit.Avatar ImageRavenclawmax says: Yeah, I could see her using the lexicon, she mentioned once in an interview that she rarely re-reads her own work, so many fans know the actual canon better than she does. I think the lexicon would be useful for background. Avatar Imagesilverkacy says: YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)Avatar Imagesilverkacy says: YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)Avatar Imagewandmastercalum says: I'm glad she's started work on it but I don't want it to be rushed Avatar Imagemoglet says: I really don't think she'd need to use the lexicon, she has masses of notes as she has said before. I'm sure that it would go against her principles to use that which was produced by someone who just got all the information from her books, then tried to make money out of it. I imagine that she will be looking at everything in greater detail than she was able to put into the books, that is the point of this encyclopaedia.Avatar Imageathena lupen says: this will be awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :DAvatar ImageWizardRain26590 says: This will be very neat! i can't wait to learn more about all the characters and places!
