Pottermore Insider Reveals How Moments Are Produced

The Pottermore Insider has a step by step look at how the Moments on Pottermore are created. They use the Magical Menagerie scene from "Prisoner of Azkaban" as an example and they explain how Pottermore Moments are selected:

Before we get into rat tonic and transforming rabbits, let’s start at the beginning – how the Moments for each book are selected. In order to provide a faithful companion to the reading experience without replicating each and every passage from the books, we select key or interesting scenes from the stories to depict on Pottermore.com.

Each potential scene is weighed against various criteria, from its relative importance in the narrative to how it might look when visualised and whether it lends itself to the inclusion of interactive features and content. We also like to highlight scenes that were omitted from the films, or those where the film depiction differs from the books.

With its cage-lined walls and the ‘squeaking, squawking, jabbering or hissing’ of their inhabitants, the Magical Menagerie Moment was selected because it is described so vividly in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. It provided an opportunity to introduce a new location and a narrative moment that was not shown in the film. It is also our first introduction to Crookshanks.

Like all Pottermore.com Moments, the Magical Menagerie Moment began its life as a black and white sketch that was drawn from a detailed brief based on thorough research into the location and moment being depicted.

You can see a step by step evolution of the artwork here. The second installment of "Prisoner of Azkaban" is currently in development.

I’m waiting for a news item explaining why Leaky went off-line for 9 days without any warning. We value this site, so why aren’t we kept informed when something goes wrong? We all understand that things can go wrong with the best-run site, but a bit of explanation would make us feel as though Leaky values its members too.

From what I understand, the Leaky site and the Pottermore site are run mostly by volunteers. After reading this article and knowing the work that goes into each of those “Moments” in Pottermore, I am even more at awe with these behind-the-curtain people!!

Thank you—we are volunteers. The editors who write the articles are just as hard-hit when there are technological issues. The Admin page for us editors was “dusting” as well, and when that came back our drafts wouldn’t save. We have many teams that run leaky: photo gallery, video gallery, tech teams, senior staff, editors, reporters, etc. We are very sorry for the inconvenience—we felt it too…but sometimes technology doesn’t like to cooperate like it should. “Mel” is Mel O.; when articles are posted by “Melissa”, it’s Melissa Anelli. I hope that clears up some confusion!
