Harry 2, Voldemort 0

November 05, 2008, 01:44 AM

Harry Potter beat Lord Voldemort again today.  Well, really, Obama beat McCain.  Or the people beat the status quo.  Or hope beat fear.  But that’s just semantics.  Everything that Harry Potter stands for:  love, heart, nerve, gut, justice, goodness, friendship, hope – all of that – won out over everything that Lord Voldemort stands for, which can be neatly lumped together under the umbrella of fear. I talk about hope and fear quite a bit.  And I’m certainly not the only one, especially wi...

Seven

October 28, 2008, 10:42 PM

Seven is an important number in the world of Harry Potter.  Seven books, seven years, seven (eight, by accident) Horcruxes.  And now seven is an important number in our world too.  In seven days, America will elect a new President of the United States. The historic impact of this particular election is unprecedented.  And it's not even over yet.  It's only just beginning, actually.  For the past several months, I've been witness to some of the ugliest politics of my (and even my grandpa's) l...

Lounger's Lurgy

September 19, 2008, 06:20 AM

I remember when I first joined TLC as a member of the Forums, the rules pertaining to political discussions were that they had to relate to the books directly. And, while this is quite a treat in and of itself, I recall wondering why they wouldn’t allow us fans of the series to discuss politics in our world. And, no offense, but I remember thinking, hmm, that sucks, they know politics is a major theme in Rowling’s work, why aren’t we allowed to discuss it as it relates to Muggles? So, imag...

Conventional Wisdom

August 30, 2008, 02:03 AM

As I sit here and watch the thousands and thousands of people who have gathered in Denver to hear the biggest nomination acceptance speech in history, I can't help but get caught up in the moment despite myself. Performers and artists of all kinds have taken the stage to reiterate Barack Obama's message of hope and change, and ordinary citizens of America, many former Republicans by their own admissions, have taken the podium to share their experiences and show their support for Obama. Now...

Fear's The Thing...

August 22, 2008, 05:06 AM

So here I am, wracking my brain trying to figure out what I'd like to write about for my first ever blog post on Leaky. But here's the thing....all this wracking of my brain is contributing to the wrecking of my nerve. I don't get nervous when I post in the Lounge, I can't seem to understand why I've got butterflys (more like bats) going bonkers inside me at the prospect of posting a blog. But there you have it. And I'm doing it anyway which -- bats or not -- and regardless of the outcom...

Blogger Bio

Name: Oxymoronic
LeakyName: Oxymoronic
House: Gryffindor

I am a graduate student living in Los Angeles with an unabashed love of all things Potter. With British blood running through my veins I cannot seem to exist without my daily cup of tea! I love reading, writing, and discussing life -- especially politics, which encompass pretty much everything -- including the world of The Boy Who Lived. This blog will express my musings on current affairs and politics as usual (or unusual), and often highlight the various organizations and movements battling back against injustice in our world in the same way the Order of the Phoenix and Dumbledore's Army did in Harry's world. While it's a given that not everyone will agree with my thoughts, my hope is that at the very least, I will get you to think about the issues that affect us muggles living all over the world.
