Boiling Snape in a cauldron of shampoo

Fictionpress to Life

April 06, 2009, 09:32 PM

I know the way the economy is going at the moment makes it hard on the wallet to purchase new books.  I myself am saving for two books that I really want, and there is not much left over for anything else.  I don't go to the library in my city because, frankly, I don't have much time for leisure!  I mean I do have more time than I did last quarter, but all of my classes are heavily reading centered and after reading literally hundreds of pages each week for class,...

Wizards and magic and myth oh my!

April 04, 2009, 01:47 AM

It's virtually impossible for a writer to come up with completely new creatures, situated in a completely new world, without drawing some sort of knowledge from the fountain of information currently available.  Let's take myth as an example.  We've seen a lot of myths used as examples in Harry Potter.  Werewolves are most commonly depicted as humans who have the shape shifting ability to become a wolf.  The wolf-part is characterized as large, wild, and animalistically inclined...

Life Sucks?

April 03, 2009, 10:50 PM

Ok, this is the second time I've written up this blog.  Let's hope it save properly this time.Let's that the title of this blog literally and figuratively.  Vampires are pop-culture.  It is no secret that Twilight has launched vampire-literature into the spotlight.  But what is it about these types of books that make them so popular and desirable?I think it's because of the idealism it offers, and the exotic allure of the impossible.  In a strictly practical manner of...

The Honest Truth

April 02, 2009, 10:43 PM

Here is the deal.  I'm doing this BEDA thing, right?  I've decided that I need to update BOTH of my blogs all the time.  I was going to just post the same thing on both blogs, but to be honest I don't use this blog enough for it's proper purpose, which is to talk about books in similar genres to Harry Potter because the basic line is I found my favorite reading genre through Harry Potter- urban fantasy.  I talked about it yesterday, so check out the blog post before this one. ...

Urban Fantasy

April 01, 2009, 12:02 AM

So I've already told my story of how I got into Twilight.  I was waiting for Deathly Hallows the book, decided I needed something to obsess about.  From there was born my obsession with urban fantasy.  What is urban fantasy, you ask?  Anything with a paranormal or fantasy/magical element to it, set in a world that somewhat resembles our own.  Harry Potter is set in the 20th/21st century.  It has magic, wizards, werewolves, etc.  It is set in a completely separate...

Cancer Danceathon

February 26, 2009, 09:28 PM

I realize it's been a full month since I last blogged, and I'm sorry to say that this blog isn't going to be about Harry Potter but I need to get the word out about an event I am participating in.March 14-15 is an event called the 24 Hour Cancer Dance-a-thon (the link opens in a new window) and it is exactly what the name says- a 24 hour swing dance event to raise money to benefit cancer research and treatment for the City of Hope hospital in Southern California.  The rules are that each...

Google meme and the publishing industry

January 22, 2009, 03:53 PM

A fun thing that I got off of Hank Green's Vlogbrothers video today.  All you have to do is copy and paste the quotes and replace my name with yours.  Try it and paste the results in the comments! "Candace needs" a firm, consistent hand that will establish house rules. Does this mean I'm head of gryffidor sometime in the future? "Candace looks like" she spends many a Friday night getting drunk with friends at Hardee's. NOT TRUE.  So not true.  I swear to God and on my Harry...

Happy New Year!

January 01, 2009, 08:53 PM

I hope y'all have had a safe and happy holiday.  I myself had a very nice, relaxing holiday aside from getting a bunch of cavities filled yesterday (not fun, my jaw is still a little sore).  To welcome in the new year I thought I'd share a few things with you.  Let's start with books. My favorite genre to read is Urban Fantasy.  What's that, you might ask?  Well if you've ever read Twilight then you've read an urban fantasy.  UF is basically fantasy or paranormal...

Happy Holidays to you all

December 25, 2008, 06:30 AM

I hope everyone has been having a wonderful holiday thus far, and for those of you who celebrate Christmas like I do, Merry Christmas!  Yesterday my mom and I made a cheesecake and she cut into it before it cooled.  I'm sure it tasted fine, but I like my cheesecake completely cooled.  It tastes different when it's warm, more like a custard.  But I didn't log on to talk about cheesecake. This year I am so thankful for my family, friends, and my Leaky peeps.  I am blessed...

Christmas Must Be Something More

December 21, 2008, 12:12 PM

Sorry for the recent silence after a multitude of blogs.  I've been home for a week and just been enjoying myself and catching up on my Leaky work (transcribing for PotterCast and LeakyCon stuff) and then we went to visit relatives a couple hours away and we just got back yesterday.  That was a lot of fun- they've got three dogs: a female pomeranian, a male australian shepherd, and a male rottweiler x german shepherd x chow mix.  The rottweiler mix is my favorite, he's so big but...

Creative Writing Classes

December 12, 2008, 04:29 PM

Something I feel worth mentioning is creative writing classes.  I took my first creative writing class this quarter and I really enjoyed it and felt that I took a lot of important things away from the class.  Today I was listening to a live blogtalkradio chat with several very accomplished urban fantasy authors.  There was one point in their discussion where they addressed writing classes and, having just finished up my first writing class, it piqued my interest.  I think...

Making A Living

December 10, 2008, 04:40 PM

It is very hard for an author to make a living off of the income of his or her books, which is why many of them still have a day job.  You don't really come across many people like J.K. Rowling, or Stephenie Meyer, or Janet Evanovich, who have each become successful enough in their own right that they can afford to support themselves and their families comfortably on what they make with their book sales.  But it is very rare for an author to be able to do so.  The phenomenon of...

Point of View

December 08, 2008, 12:50 PM

Just dropping in briefly because I wanted to share this article by Charlaine Harris.  Scroll down a little to the blog post and read about her holiday.  She talks about the holiday village she sets up and how she imagines stories and events, while everyone else sees a multitude of colorful ceramic pieces arranged in somewhat of an organized fashion.  It's all about point of view.  It all depends on who's eyes your looking through when you tell the story.  So while Charlaine...

December 01, 2008, 01:00 AM

So right now it is 10:29 p.m. of October 3rd. But this post is not getting posted until December 1. Why? Simply because you cannot post a quiz about "What kind of christmas tree ornament are you?" in October! you go! Have a little holiday cheer. My ornament was spot on. You Are a Tree You love every part of the holidays, down to the candy canes and stockings. And you're goofy enough to put a Christmas tree ornament on your tree! What Christmas Ornament Are You?

Happy Holidays!

November 29, 2008, 11:17 AM

Did you eat a lot of Turkey?  Drown in mashed potatoes and gravy?  My family did a prime rib instead of a turkey because that's what we like but maybe next year we'll do the whole nine yards.  I dunno, that would be a lot of food for just three people.  Anyways, I just wanted to leave you with this from a musical I was in that my church put on when I was ten years old: "It's the time of year when all the lights shine and everyone says be of good cheer."Happy holidays!listening...
