LeakyCon Love

This weekend I experienced the love that was LeakyCon 2009. There were so many wonderful presentations to attend, friends to meet for the first time, friends to see again that it was too big for just a few days. LeakyCon was truly the Con made of awesome.

I saw so many awesome presentations, but I can only mention a few of them here. While I really looked forward to DavidEnglish’s presentation, the room was full so I had to sit in the hallway and listen with the ever incredibly awesome Bel.

(Yes, I did meet DavidEnglish!)

The Lily and Stag staff held a wonderful presentation that allowed all of us to experience first hand what they offer virtually. The discussion was fun, filled with depth and best of all I finally got to meet some of our incredible reading group staffers. They will be sorting into new groups on June 20th, if you want to check out what our incredible reading groups have to offer.

I was able to help write my first Filk this weekend. Written to the tune of “Benny and the Jets,” Hagrid and his pets will surely be a huge hit! SeverineSnape, Aislinn and MJLeakyCon promise they’ll record our filk later. I also watch Dr Cynthia Cynical, the author of Snape: Good or Bad in Bed. Her presentation was funny and enightening. Of course, I don’t have a Snape obsession!

One of the greatest experiences I had this weekend was meeting the Harry Potter Alliance (HPA) staff in attendance. Andrew Slack is well, amazing. (He does a great Obama impersonation as well.) Karen and Katie from HPA, equally amazing, were also there. I’ve enjoyed getting to know these guys over the past few months, and I adored hearing about some of the campaigns HPA is working on.

Not in Harry’s Name is a wonderful campaign that teaches us about Fair Trade chocolate. Check out the Common Room at HPA for more details. I will admit I’ve found a new love for chocolate, but only Fair Trade chocolate for me from now on.

The What Would Dumbledore Do campaign asks us to look at Dumbledore’s example and help put into words the lessons we’ve learned from him. You
place lessons on cards and give them to the HPA staff, who will compile
them into a group of 100 lessons. I LOVE this project! The English
teacher in me loves the text to real world connections, the person in
me loves thinking that Dumbledore’s lessons will help us make this
world a little better.

My greatest hope is that we’ll all work together to make this world a better place.

One of the greatest joys of my otherwise boring life is the wonderful staffers here at Leaky. Meeting many of them, or seeing them again, was truly one of the highlights of this weekend. Every member of our staff is an intricate part in how Leaky works, but more importantly, each person is a truly wonderful person. I am truly honored to call this staff my family. I adore you guys, and already miss you terribly. I look forward to 2011.
