What’s in a casting?

Every time there is a new casting announcement for any of the new HBP actors the HBP Casting Images thread blows up with activity. Every fan has such vivid images in their head of the cast members that each new casting stirs up feelings of either excitement or disappointment. I always try to not judge an actors portrayal of a character before actually seeing them in that role, but I do always have a first reaction to any casting.

In the past there have been some castings that I have been immediately in love with. The first pictures I saw of Daniel Radcliffe at the casting announcement made me very excited. This boy looked perfect for the part. Despite the fact that the glasses were fake, this young boy looked like what Harry Potter should look like. Another casting I was excited about was the casting of Evanna Lynch as Luna Lovegood. Not only was she a huge Harry Potter fan, but she captured the Luna that was inside my head. Her blonde hair and smiling expression made me so excited to see her in action.

The casting of Jim Broadbent as Horace Slughorn was another casting that made me excited. I have been a Broadbent fan for years, enjoying his work in “Moulin Rouge” and “Bridget Jones’ Diary.” The roles that I’ve seen him play often displayed characteristics of which I also thought Slughorn would have. The two pictures which have been released, which can be found here and here in the galleries, excited me even further. While I do wish Slughorn was a bit smaller height wise, and a bit rounder width wise, as portrayed in DancingGoat’s fan art seen here, this pictures display a friendly man who would love to add the famous Harry Potter to his “collection”.

Judging by the reactions in the Slughorn in the HBP film thread most people are for the casting, but what do you think? What do you think of the other castings for HBP? Anyone that you feel is a great casting decision? Anyone you feel is a horrible casting choice? Feel free to comment with your opinion, or visit the HBP Casting Images thread to post your opinion.
