With the release of Deathly Hallows looming ever closer I’ve found myself quite torn. I’m so very excited to see the movie; yet, at the same time, I’m horrified by the thought that this is all ending. It’s made for a lot of mixed emotions, and even more reflection.
I find myself, this morning, thinking back to what first peaked my interest in crafting items from J.K. Rowling’s incredible world. It was the weekend of the release of Chamber of Secrets on DVD. My oldest son – who I just dropped off at college this weekend! Omigoodness, where has the time gone!? – was bringing a friend home from school with him to have a “Harry Potter Weekend”. We had the first movie, I had pre-ordered the new one. We were getting pizzas. We were going to have an absolutely magical time of it. When they arrived my son’s friend had his backpack stuffed full. Not with books, mind you, but with yards and yards of black fabric. He wanted a wizard robe of his very own, you see, and his grandmother had purchased the fabric. She had no clue how to come up with a pattern, however, and there just weren’t any out there to buy commercially at that time. Needless to say I set to work. Measuring him, cutting, sewing. By the end of the next day he had his very own set of student robes to wear while casting spells! That wasn’t good enough, though. For what is a wizard without his wand? A dowel rod, a Dremel, and some stain later and both of my little wizards were set. They spent hours upon hours casting spells, fighting trolls and basilisks, defending the muggle world from a dark wizard invasion…and I? I was hooked. The rest, as they say, is history.
So. I want to hear YOUR story. What got YOU into crafting items from this incredible world that has brought so much to our lives?
Happy crafting!
