The Next Doctor… for real

Yeah, I know this was announced a few weeks ago. Admittedly, I’ve been in denial. It’s not that I have anything against Matt Smith becoming the 11th Doctor. He’s just so not what I expected that I really was speechless.

Matt Smith will be the next Time Lord

The one thing I said they’d have to do was avoid bringing on a David Tennant lookalike. And what have they done? OK, he’s not as hot as Tennant, but he’s defined by his hair, and he’s gangly and skinny. So all I say now is, I trust the Moff to make the decision, and it must be because even though Matt Smith is a younger David Tennant in some respects, he’s got something fresh and new to bring to the role that I just don’t see yet.

Of course, that still leaves wide-open the role of companion. There are plenty of rumors floating out there. Michelle Ryan will appear in the special that airs around Easter-time, which is fueling speculation she’s going to serve as the transitional person who is there with Tennant when he regenerates into Smith. I’d be OK with that, but I’d also be OK with it being another red-herring. After all, there are several more specials still to come, so plenty more time to introduce a companion.

Who would you like to see? How about a return from River Song? Jenny from the Doctor’s Daughter? (Maybe not… Smith’s a bit young to be seen with a daughter like that. It’d be creepy if there was chemistry.) (Besides, apparently Georgia Moffett is still dating David Tennant. Can you say awkward? LOL) Or maybe, if the rumors of Donna’s and the Master’s return are true for next Christmas, it’ll be Donna who somehow anchors the transition as a guest star before they even introduce the real new companion. I’d like that, I think. I’d like to have some kind of closure with Donna’s character. I felt like she was so brilliant, and then it was so sad to see her left without an inkling of what she’d done or where she’d been.

Of course, I still think it would be fun to do a Potter/Who crossover. Bonnie Wright as a companion? Or Emma Watson? Better yet, how about Evanna Lynch?
