The difference between Rose and Martha is that Rose’s character sucks, and Martha’s doesn’t. I think that part of Martha doing the whole ‘leaving the doctor and continuing life’ thing means that she can catch up with him every now and then.

I like it when the Doctor’s friends turn up – it makes him feel loved [:
Similarly, Dobby doesn’t deserve to be forgotten, he’s a nice enough character too.

Now if they turned Martha’s character into a brig style recurring character, I’d have no complaints. While it was great to see Nicholas Courtney in The Sarah Jane Adventures it’s clear he is getting on in life a bit.
It’s been confirmed that the actress who played Rose’s UNIT contact in Turn Left is returning for Planet of the Dead, both the actress’s name and the name of the character escape me for the moment but I hope you know who I mean.

I’ll take Martha coming back (once it’s for ONE episode! No getting trapped in the TARDIS again), as long as we get Jack and Mickey as part of the deal! She was a good companion, but she did pretty much run her course. If she does return, it had better be something to do with UNIT, and maybe drag Torchwood into the equation too. I know there’s a Torchwood mini-series this year; maybe the two could link up in some way for an episode.

I thought Martha had taken Tosh’s (sobs) place at Torchwood and Mickey had taken Owen’s at the end of the final episode of Dr Who?

Maybe we’ll be seeing some more crossover’s now perhaps? That would be so much fun.

I love Rose and Martha was OK. I would love to see her and Mickey and Jack come together for another episode. I agree that it is good for the Doctor to see his friends every now and then even if he can’t (or, in Jack’s case) doesn’t really want to travel with them.

I prefer Rose, but I like Martha as well. The Doctor should see his friends every now and then; it’s just part of being friendly. I’ve watched the old show as well and I wonder if we’ll ever see any of the oldies in chameos or something like that.

I love Martha!!! I think it is fine now that she is engaged she is over the doctor, but i mean come one can you blame the girl the doctor is amazing. I would love to see her in Torchwood which is what is implied in the series finale.

In my opinion, Martha was a deeper, less irritating and generally more REAL character than Rose. But that might have something to do with my dislike for Billy Piper.

I agree that some of the old characters were great. I suppose that is why they re-introduced Sarah Jane?

I love Martha to death, and would be thrilled if she came back. The presence of recurring characters like Martha, Sarah Jane, Jack, etc. is (imho) meant to teach the Doctor he’s not alone and that he’s got a family on Earth that loves him very much.

Speaking of that, while you’re bringing Martha back, how about some other old(er) companions, Beeb? Like Benton or Ace or Tegan? Heck, you’ve already made the books pseudo-canon, bring on a televized Fitz and Anji, too! :D

As much as I thought Martha was a cool character, it does bug me whenever there’s a rumour a character will ‘return’, and especially when they’ve already done so before. As evil as it may sound (and I know it’s a family show) I wish they had the guts to kill off a recurring character for once, like Torchwood did.

Both characters are really good although I didn’t think they brushed up 2 Catherine Tate…she was jus an absolute star and brought a whole new element to the Dr Who Francise!
Martha was ur educated college going, homework doing kid a bit like our Hermione. Whereas Rose Tyler was the lost type with the feeling of being needed.
I don’t think they can and should be compared because they are 2 totally different characters!
A bit like HP and Twilight :)

Good blog, by the way. I heard that UNIT would be in the special coming around Easter time, but would Martha even be with UNIT anymore cos Jack said in Journey’s End "I’m not sure about UNIT these days…" That implied she’d be in Torchwood, too.

I love every single companion equally, like SilverMoose said they all bring something new to the show, and you can’t really compare them. As for bringing companions back, it really really depends on what the story is all about, because that’s all that matters at the end of the day – whether it’s a well written, good story, and I think that Rusty’s a damn good writer. :)

But for the record, I’d love love love to see the Ten visit Bannerman Road!

I thought that Freema had signed a contract with ITV and that’s why she wasn’t going to be appearing in Torchwood (thank goodness!)? I actually wouldn’t mind seeing more of Martha in Doctor Who! I really liked the maturity of her character last series (or is it season? I get confused!) and her involvement with UNIT was great! I really disliked her in Torchwood though, I don’t think the character of Martha works well in the gritty environment: to me she’s more of a happy-go-lucky girl, not at all dark enough for the Hub.

If she does come back, they’d better bring Mickey back as well! Though Noel Clarke may be too busy winning BAFTAs and all that jazz (YAY! =D )
