Have you seen the new trailer for the next Doctor Who special? I’d thought it wasn’t supposed to be on until today, but apparently there was something on BBC last night. I don’t have a link for you, but I do have a synopsis, so don’t read on if you don’t want to know.

And….here we go. The trailer opens with what looks like the wreckage of the inside of a tour bus – the Doctor flashes back to some kind of crash, then we pan out to see that it’s not a tour bus but a beat-up double decker, crash-landed (I guess?) in the middle of a vast desert. The Doctor’s companion for the episode, played by Michelle Ryan, says, “We’re on another world!”

Then we see the Doctor sift the sand through his fingers, as the companion asks him what’s wrong. He replies, “Every single instinct of mine is telling me to get off this planet, right now.”

Next we get a quick glimpse of some kind of bug monster, and we hear another voice, a woman’s, narrating: “Something is coming, riding on the wind. It devours…”

“What is it?” asks the Doctor.

I can’t understand what she replies. Next, the woman’s voice warning, “Run… run… run– run!!” That’s over an image of some freaky looking flying creatures or spaceships (or maybe they’re both) — they have mouths and resemble sting rays in the air.

It ends with the Doctor’s promise. “That planet out there – three suns, wormhole and alien sand, that planet is nothing. I’m gonna get you home. I promise.” But how? I don’t see the Tardis anywhere… the Doctor appears to be marooned along with everyone else on this bus.

Now, if I’m not much mistaken, the original plan was for the Torchwood series 3 (a week of one-hour specials so just five episodes) to air in March. March is over, and the BBC’s website still lists it as coming soon… so I’m not sure what’s up with that. But after seeing this trailer, I can’t wait for the next Doctor Who special! It looks creepy and eery and altogether different from anything else we’ve seen in new Who. To quote #9 – it looks fantastic.

Did I mention – first Who to be filmed in HD? Fantastic!
