Morning, everyone!

Won don’t despair – my wand is spruce, so also in the pine family, and also has a unicorn core, so Ravenclaw is still a definite possibility for you! As for the stuff you collect… evidently we’ll need at least some of it later, plus there are potions ingredients to be found in some locations. :)

Looking forward to the pics, Jen! And I totally know what you mean about the garbage disposal. I’d never lived anywhere – house, apartment, duplex, whatever – that didn’t have one. Then we moved here and during the course of building our house discovered that a disposal was not a standard feature but an upgrade! So we had to pay extra for that. I guess, being Washington, most people compost here. We recycle (though we’re not as psycho about it as some people I know, LOL, it’s practically a religion around here), but I am not yet converted to the composting crowd. I want my disposal! :)

I just finally finished condensing that character name list. It took me four days! From more than 1200 pages, it is now down to 527. But I can still hear the trees in my backyard weeping at the thought of printing it out. I’m holding off for now. My conscience just won’t let me do it. LOL So I’m off to work on other things for now. It’s at least a relief to have that chore done.

Hope everyone’s having a terrific day. :)

I know I’m missing three chocolate frog cards, three books, and three ingredients. One of the ingredients I know exactly where it is but I left it lying there. I was afraid to collect it as it was too scary.

WON, I got an Elder Wand, the most suspicious wand in the world. I don’t even know if my Sorting test mattered after that.

I take it we have another RAVENCLAW in our midst!

I have also found out something that I had wondered about. I have become suspicious that all the chocolate frog cards, potion items, and various collectibles might not all be available you first time through or even your fifth time throuhg.

In “Harry’s Early Days at Hogwarts” I just had a chocolate frog card materialize before my eyes, right in the middle of the screen, on a step I have examined time after time. So, that tells me as long as you have something to look for you cannot assume you have rendered any page useless. The hidden items can appear long after you have searched the page over and over again.

Morning all!

To finish the catch-up I started yesterday…

Asti, I looked up Florence and Giles, and it sounds really good, but it’s not readily available through Amazon. There are some individuals selling copies though, so I may wind up picking it up. Have you read The Woman in Black, the one Dan’s going to be in the movie for? I noticed that Florence and Giles was compared to it. I bought it, but haven’t read it yet; I definitely want to before the movie comes out though! Also, if you like the playing with language, you might enjoy The Disreputable History of Frankie-Landau Banks. It’s a completely different kind of story – contemporary, set at a boarding school, where the main character pulls off elaborate pranks as a way of one-upping a boys-only secret society on campus. Frankie plays with language a lot, specifically words with negative prefixes or suffixes that don’t actually have a positive opposite. So, for example, she uses “gruntled” as the opposite of “disgruntled” or “dulge” as the opposite of “indulge”…it’s a lot of fun and rather cleverly done. :)

The Jo “biography” was very much unauthorized, which was why the fansites, after briefly mentioning that it was being made, really didn’t provide coverage on it. I originally had no intention of watching it, but a bunch of people who did talked about how it’s so bad that it’s good (for a laugh), filled with ridiculous inaccuracies. So, now I’m curious! Lifetime repeats movies all the time, so I’m sure I’ll be able to catch part of it eventually.

Lemon, 527 pages?! Whoa! You could publish that as a book!!

I’ve posted some baby pics on Facebook, and will go put them on CC (where I am once again woefully behind) in a moment. I’ve also begun posting the rest of my various pics on FB…I’ve got probably about 2 years worth! Aside from last year’s GLEE concert, I think the last time I’d posted pics was for LeakyCon 2009. My sisters have been bugging me about it. So far, they’re going up really quickly, which is nice for a change. I hope it goes as smoothly on CC!

Jen, that’s odd, it’s readily available on Amazon over here. Though I must admit, I got it on the Kindle……..it was only 99p, lol! But it was a great find, and if you can get it, I’d really recommend it.
I have read Woman in Black, (and loved it; Susan Hill is a great writer,) and wouldn’t really compare FandG to that at all. I’ve also seen it compared to The Turn of the Screw, which is a closer comparison, though imo, TTotS is very overated.
I did really love the Florence speak, and will look out for your recommendation, thankyou! (I’ve just added it to my wish list, lol, it sounds good!)
I saw the FB pics, they’re delightful! I hope you have the time to get them on CC soon!

Evening all!

I’ve posted a few of the baby pics on CC, and finished uploading my LeakyCon pics to FB. I’ve started on my videos, but will have to do the rest of them, as well as putting the LeakyCon pics on CC, another time, since I’ve got to return to my homework for my fall class.

One interesting little Leaky note, though… one of the staffers had Tweeted this earlier: “Some cOol, fUn, riddles at the leakynews.com teaseR page, if you Can figure out wherE to look ;)” Since the captial letters spell out “SOURCE,” I pulled up the source code for the page and found this:

We’re almost there and you’ve all been grand.
We hope it hasn’t been driving you mad.
We’re taking our history, our talents, our drive
And making something for all fans alive.

We’ve got such fun in store, with help from our friends,
New ones and old ones, we’re seeking new ends.

The other day, the page was linking to Doctor Who clips. Not sure if that was a clue or just someone having a little fun with us, LOL. Either way, it definitely sounds like something new is coming soon. I’m excited to find out what it is! :D

JEN, I did watch the JK Rowling movie on Youtube. I kept wondering where the material came from, the intimate details that we rabid fans don’t know. I have never been a big fan of “made up private conversations”. (That may not be fair since I did enjoy The King’s Speech and The Queen but that may be because they were historical public figures. This felt as if Jo’s private life had been exploited in a sensational way.) So, I went exploring and found an article in THE SCOTSMAN, dated June 16, 2003, written by Stephen McGinty, called The JK Rowling Story. The author did not site any sources for his story. It was a very long article and almost exactly what was presented in the Lifetime movie. The man appears to have a very vivid imagination. He had a couple of quotes from people in JKR’s past but for the most part it was a fairly detailed biography with no supporting research.

I continue to find items on pages in POTTERMORE that I have been over time and time again. I wonder if the site is malfunctioning or if it my computers. I shift from computer to computer and seem to find things I’ve missed when I change machines,

HW, thanks for friending my daughter. She will accept when she gets on POTTERMORE the next time.

JEN, I also wonder since Melissa has been working on the development of POTTERMORE so long if they are meaning to link LEAKY to it in some fashion?

I also wonder since Melissa was part of the consultation team that put POTTERMORE together why she wouldn’t have told them we would expect to have some influence on where we were Sorted?

WON, GRAYMAYNE, HW, RHIANNON and ASTI, of our regulars here, have Sorted where they expected or wanted to Sort.

PB, FELIPE, LEMON and myself have not Sorted where we expected to go.

As the rest of the group enter Pottermore and Sort it will be interesting to watch the percentages of how many Sort where they expect.

So far our less active or formerly active Leaky people have been pretty much Sorting where they wanted, at least the ones I know about have.

My DS went where he wanted. My daughter would have liked GRYFFINDOR but was fine with HUFFLEPUFF. I expected her to go HUFFLEPUFF or RAVENCLAW.

Morning all!

Ah, new girl is out visiting stores today, so I have my old routine back for a day. I’d been thinking I’d also have Sat, but then remembered that I’m off this Sat for class. We only meet twice – this Sat and then not again until Dec for our final presentations. It’s convenient to not have to go to campus each week, but I can already see that it’s going to be a lot more work than being able to just show up and make a comment or two would be. Last weekend, with the baby being born and my being at my sister’s, I wasn’t able to get onto the class site much, and when I finally did on Monday evening, there were over 100 messages to be read and responded to. In happy school news, I got an A for the summer class, so the work and craziness paid off, and now it’s a relief to have that behind me (though I still feel I didn’t learn as much as I should have, which should have been the point, not the grade, but oh well).

Thanks, Huff! They’re doing well, despite being a bit sleep deprived. ;)

I don’t know, LH; since Pottermore has worked with the fansites before, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was something, but somehow I don’t imagine that being the whole thing. I know that a number of the staff members who worked on LeakyCon have formed an event planning/management company called Mischief Management, which was one of the first accounts to Tweet about the question mark page on leakynews.com, so I’ve been wondering if it’s going to be related to that. Perhaps they’ll be branching out to cover additional fandoms, sort of like Andrew from Mugglenet did with his new site Hypable. Also, they have said that there will definitely be a LeakyCon 2012, so I’m thinking (hoping) the redesign will be launched in conjunction with an announcement about that.

With the Sorting, I suppose it’s possible that Melissa did tell them that and the final decision went against it. But to tell you the truth, personally I didn’t expect it nor did I want it…I was relieved that my Sorting test didn’t give me a choice. I was looking forward to finding out where Jo’s Sorting test wanted to place me, and I didn’t want to influence it at all – I felt that Jo’s test would be the “real” one and I was going to trust it. So, it’s possible that if others on the team felt as I do, that that’s why they opted against allowing input. It’s so interesting that there are several here who didn’t get into the houses they wanted, because most of the people I follow on Twitter got what they expected. There are a few who didn’t, but they’re mostly Hufflepuff/Ravenclaw switches, not complete opposites. It would definitely be interesting to learn exactly how the test works; it would be fascinating to examine the algorithm…even though most of it would likely be gibberish to me, LOL!

Well, I should be lurking throughout the day, reveling in having my desk to myself and being able to pop in between reports! :D

If anyone’s looking for some YA recommendations, this is an updated list of titles nominated for the YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) 2012 list of Best Fiction for Young Adults: http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/yalsa/booklistsawards/bestficya/titlesnominated.cfm
The list includes titles published between September of last year and those to be pubbed up to December of this year, so there are some that haven’t been released yet. The selection of titles to appear on the final list will take place at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in January. Asti, Delirium is on there, and there are several others that I’ve either already read or have on my wish list.

Once I’ve graduated, I really hope I’ll be able to serve on one of these selection committees. I actually had an invitation to serve on the RI Teen Book Awards committee, but we would have to commit to reading a minimum of 35 books between now and March, and as nice as it would be to have an excuse to read instead of working on school assignments, I just know that it would be risky to take it on knowing I have my praticum coming up, as well as having to prep for the teacher’s certification exams (I’m going to have to take both RI & MA) and my school’s comps. Yikes, I’m going to freak myself out thinking about how much is coming up, LOL!

I’ve tried hard in the last two weeks to learn to identify with Slytherin and nothing anyone is tellng me is making it feel right to me. No matter what people tell me to make me feel better about it by telling me I have the good qualities of the house it just doesn’t feel right.

I’ve lived my life as a Ravenclaw/Hufflepuff. Now I’ve been sorted into Slytherin and I am having no luck at assimilating myself there, even realizing that a lot of “Slytherinishness is at least partially an act” on the part of those in that house, an attempt to live up/down to the expectations the other houses have of them, a bit of a performance.

I have never attempted to look harder or meaner than I am or to “do whatever is necessary” to reach my goals, not if doing whatever was “necessary” meant taking advantage of, hurting, or using other people. I have only ever “done what is necessary” when it involved hard work and sacrifice on my part.

To make it even worse, not only do I not identify with the house I have been sorted into, the house is generally looked upon with suspicion, it is openly reviled by the other three houses.

This is stupid to allow an online sorting make me question my own character and to allow it to make me feel judged in an unflattering way. If this was anyone else I would tell them this is a stupid useless seven question online test and to not let it bother me but so many of you are being Sorted where you wanted it makes my case that my sorting was a mistake weak. If I had wanted to be a Slytherin as so many people DO want to be I would be thrilled now too but I didn’t want to be a Slytherin. I hate that anyone may have ideas planted in their heads about me because of it.

I’m glad for those of you who are getting the houses you want but I ended up somewhere I don’t understand at all. I wouldn’t have understood Gryffindor either and would have felt emotionally removed from it but I could have lived with it a lot more easily because no one questions the character of people in that house. I feel being sorted into Slytherin puts the expectations of character traits on me that I do not even recognize, much less to which I would aspire.

Okay, I know I am blowing this all up out of proportion, I do. So many people view their sortings as legitimate it worries me there is a perception mine is legitimate too and I have to say I protest on principle because I just don’t feel like a Slytherin, not even when viewed from the standpoint of their good qualities.

I’m not mad at anyone. I’m just sad for me. I was so looking forward to Pottermore. I suppose I thought everyone would sort about where they usually sorted, where they usually wanted to sort, so my only real options were going to be Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw. I was so wrong. I have lost sleep over it. I need to get over it.

I chose Hufflepuff when we sorted ourselves here at Leaky. I didn’t want to choose Hufflepuff as I tended to think of Hufflepuffs as a bit boring. I wanted Ravenclaw because I aspired to intelligence and quirkiness, but I made myself be honest with myself and choose Hufflepuff because I felt I deserved to be in the house with all the hard working but less “sexy” types. I have hated seeing this yellow almost every single time I log on to Leaky since my heart of hearts wanted it to be blue. I took the blue away from myself because I felt I didn’t deserve it. I wouldn’t let myself have blue on my screen. I felt choosing blue would be too presumptuous so I punished myself with yellow.

Now I would leap for joy if I could see yellow instead of green at Pottermore.

I know. I know. Way too much…but I had to get it out of my system.

Sorry all…

Lady Hawke – if you really, truly feel it is a mistake then cancel the account and make a new one when the beta is over. Who knows what happened – you could have overthought the questions, or not thought them through enough. I don’t think you are a bad person for sorting into Slytherin.

LH… You already know my views on the sorting business all too well. I cannot tell you anything other than what I feel on the subject. If it were me, I would continue exploring Pottermore and not worry about the house assignment. After the questionnaire is circulated, let them know how pissed off you are, and inform them that is why you are forced kill your membership forthwith, and do so! It is the ONLY way they will get the message, if indeed they are at all capable of actually ‘getting it’… After Oct. rolls around in a couple of weeks, you can rejoin, and take the sorting over until you get results you feel comfy with! Otherwise, I do not know what more to tell you, other than I truly feel for you, and know I would feel exactly as you do if our situations were reversed.

Lady Hawke, Those of us who know you, know that you are good and hardworking. Most of the regulars here do not change their opinions of any others just because of the house chosen by or that chooses them.

We all love Adella Black 75 and she chose Slytherin for herself.

We all know that “house” is not truly an ironclad way to tell true character. Look at Snape and Wormtail! Luna was obviously brilliant, but she was also odd, flamboyant and picked on. She might have found other oddballs to hang with if she had been a Hufflepuff.

Yes, if it bothers you this much, cancel the account after the beta period and create a new one.

As I think about this, I realize that I have a secretive side and it could easily get me into Slytherin, if I ever get my email. So I suppose I had better start thinking universally and not try to put myself into any particular house.

I wanted to be a Gryffindor, but I don’t have that kind of overt courage. I know I’m bright, but I do not truly apply myself unless I am truly interested in the subject at hand. I’m not sure I would really be a good Ravenclaw. I know I am a bit too flighty to make a good Hufflepuff. Besides I hate yellow!

I may be told to get back on the train since there has obviously been an error in sending my invitation.

But I want to KNOW!!!!! ;)

Hometime!! ;)

Good evening!

I have not been here properly for a few days, (apart from my book response to Jen yesterday, lol, I can’t resist a book conversation!) I have been busy, and tired. I am still tired, but am looking forward to 3 days off!

And I have BRILLIANT news! Do you remember I posted about the golf assessment day my son attended? Well, today he received an email telling him he has been accepted into the County Academy Training programme! I am so so proud. Though I feel an ache in my credit card. It’s a RIDICULOUSLY expensive sport. But woohoo for my son! Isn’t he fab!

Wolfie’s back!!!!! Yay! Can’t wait to hear about the rest of your trip………I hope no more cruelty to animals was involved??? It’s good to see you! xx

Jen, I am SO envious. You were offered the chance to read, judge and vote for books! Wow. My dream. I hope you’ll have time to do it in the future. Your future job will place you in the ideal situation for expertise! I am looking forward to looking at your link tomorrow when I have more time.

Lady Hawke, I was surprised to be Sorted into Ravenclaw, and a bit wistful about not being in Hufflepuff. I have been placed there in every other test I’ve done. Although I was stupidly pleased to have achieved the high Ravenclaw standards, I still think I’m a Hufflepuff.
It’s odd. We’re putting so much faith into the Sorting test on Pottermore. However “accurate” the test is supposed to be, we still each know our own selves the best.
I said in a previous post, there is, without doubt, some of each House in all of us.
It’s not about deserving, or not deserving. What is in your heart and how you feel is what counts. Wherever you are sorted doesn’t matter a jot, it’s a very short, computer generated test. If you’re not happy being in Slytherin, then you are not properly sorted………….and that goes for Lemon, and anyone else too. Go with your heart, and don’t pay any attention to your page. It’s just a colour. xxxx
