I have finally finished The Casual Vacancy… I won’t say anything here that could be viewed as a spoiler, more just my general reaction to the book.

It was draining and I feel a bit ill at ease… At best, I have mixed emotions about almost everyone in the book. Many of them I disliked without reservation. Many I had no use for by the end of the book. The circumstances marked out in the plot were troubling. I was glad to see that some of the characters had experienced a bit of an about face in their viewpoints but I was not convinced of their dedication to stay a new path once the shock of the circumstances wore off. One can become sentimental in a crisis and revert to standard behavior when life returns to the humdrum.

This does not rank among my favorite books. I read it out of solidarity with Jo. I will probably continue to read anything she writes. but I sincerely hope she has this genre out of her system.

Hi Lady Hawke, sorry to hear about the AC incident. Please watch for nausea and vomiting, persistence of headache, change in mental state and/or behavior like confusion, extreme drowsiness, difficulty waking, blurring of vision, and imbalance. Any of these will indicate that he has to be seen by an ER physician ASAP. He is suffering from a concussion right now. The above signs and symptoms may point to something more serious and life threatening. It’s always better to err on the side of caution where head trauma is concerned.

We are still undecided if we want to attend a costume party an hour from now. If we do go, I might dress up as a ninja or simply slap on a cute mask.

JOSEPHINE, thanks, he seems to be feeling a lot better than he did for the first two or three hours this afternoon. He was a bit stunned but he has since installed the new modem, had dinner, watched a movie, played a game of Liverpool Rummy and is back to watching the news.

The Storminess has already begun here in SoMD… Good news is the 20-25 mph winds & rain have pretty much denuded the bigger trees around my house of their leaves, so they will be less prone to being downed when the big winds hit tomorrow morning through Tuesday afternoon. My generator has been test run for an hour, & is ready to go. I managed to get six 5 gallon cans along with my pickup filled with gas yesterday, & ordered 4 tanks of propane which were delivered about an hour ago. My generator is dual fueled so I have enough fuel to run it continuously for about 50 hours. After that I will have to hope I can get more propane if the power is still out. It probably will go out early Monday if past is prologue. If this thing is half as bad as they are guessing the power could be off for weeks!

Aloha! ;)

Arm still hurts, but it depends on the position it is in.It seems to hurt more on the weekend. I suppose that that is because I reach out with it more then. Doing laundry one-handed is not really an option, and the dryer sits on top of the front-load washer. So I have to reach up with water-heavy clothes. Lengerie is not much problem, but slacks are very heavy and the dog bed is big and awkward. I haven’t needed to try towels or sheets, we have plenty of those still clean. And it is a chance to weed out the very worn ones. ;)

We may get just a bit of rain from Won’s weather mess, but probably not. Our temps have been dropping and Hallowen is expected to be fairly frosty. I am glad it is on Wednesday as that means the kids won’t be out too late. It also means that we probably won’t get too many kids. ;)

WON, if you have phone service but the power is down, please call someone and ask them to come here and let us know you are okay. Of course, if you still have phone service you can probably post your situation from the phone.

Good evening!

Daughter was dropped off at about 11 this morning. She and her friend looked fine, but Mum looked exhausted! Apparently the girls were still talking at 3am! At least it is half term, so they can sleep in in the morning!

ASTI, whenever my daughter has a “sleepover” there is very little sleeping done. Even though I go to bed and even if they are not being loud there is something about people moving around in your house, carrying on with activities, that keeps me aware, if not completely awake. My daughter is generally cranky and useless following a sleepover. It must be close to a reasonable bedtime there for your daughter. Maybe you’ll have a bit more privacy once she is off to sleep.

Lady Hawke, I have been a Cruel Mummy so far, and have turned down all pleas to host a sleepover. I have a horrid feeling that the fun of last night might result in a fresh attack.
Daughter is making a very good show of being NOT TIRED AT ALL, but there are very dark shadows under her eyes. They resemble Heath Ledger as The Joker, lol.

ASTI, I do not enjoy sleepovers. There is always a tremendous mess as well. It is amazing how the mind of a child interprets the words, “Don’t make a mess. If you make one you are cleaning it up, not me.” The next morning will look as if a bomb went off in the living room and kitchen and there will be assurances that, “See, we didn’t make a mess.”

Hi, DR LEW! How did the trip and presentation go? Are you learning to manage? We don’t hear from our new graduates with new jobs much.

Hi LH, trip and presentation went really well. I ended up having a good conference – it was quite interesting to see how the dynamic changed now that I’m faculty and not a student. I was wondering if it would be different, and it actually was. While none of my friendships changed, I did see some shifts in relationships with people who were a little ahead of me – there were some people that I now felt like I was on more even footing with. The types of conversations I had also were different. There was a lot more of discussion of students, teaching, advising, etc. I quite enjoyed the new dynamic. Definitely made me feel more established. I even had students coming up to me to talk about my research and graduate program – really cool. I felt like a real scientist. ;)

Additionally, I absolutely nailed my talk. Best research talk I’ve ever given – nothing but good feedback and a lot of excitement. Just what I needed!

As for managing, I’m not doing a great job. I’m spending far too much time with the new boy. O:)

DR. LEW, all grown up! Isn’t it amazing what a piece of paper and a job can do?! It transforms you.

Again, just give it time. You can’t fix what has taken years to fall apart in a few weeks or months. So, give it its due time and enjoy your new life and your new boy.

The hound is still hanging in. The growth sticks out as large as a tennis ball, but he seems to not feel too bad. He has lost quite a bit of weight, but it seems to be maintaining where it is now. Of course, we are giving him additional goodies. He likes ice cream and baby food meats and hot dogs. He also likes the food for small, spoiled dogs mixed into his regular food. We just hope he is in good spirits until the end. ;)

Off to bed. ;)

We had a bit of an earthquake. I felt my chair lurch and I heard the rafters creaking overhead. It was a 3.9 with the epicenter 39 miles west of here.

Hi Dr LEW, yuppers that lil’ parchment changes everything! LH, there have been a lot of quakes popping up all over North America in the last few days… The weather here has gotten progressively worse overnight. The rain is unreal, & the winds have been strong at times but not overly so all things considered. The weather geeks say it will get real ‘exciting’ over here starting around 5 or 6 pm and get downright ‘hectic’ by midnight! Took a quick look-see around outside about an hour ago and so far everything is still in its place. The power is still on, but there have been a few outages reported just north of here. I got my fingers & toes all crossed, but realistically I am almost sure there will be an outage later today or tonight. Just too many old trees near power lines around here.

Power just went out here @ 1:15 am, I’m on the generator right now. Whatever happened did not happen anywhere near here as far as I can tell. Just took a look up & down the road where the power lines run, and all looks ok as far as I can see. I guess something must’ve happened closer to town. Oh well… Lets see how long it takes for it to come back. I suspect no sooner than this weekend!

The HMS Bounty has been lost along with two passengers off the coast of Hatteras, North Carolina. This is the ship that was built for the 1960 production of Mutiny on the Bounty with Marlon Brando. The ship was sailed on the course of the original HMS Bounty during the filming of the movie. It was also used in Pirates of the Carribean, Dead Man’s Chest.

The HMS Bounty was sailing from Connecticut to Florida when it started taking on water and lost propulsion. They signaled for help and started abandoning ship into two 25 foot life boats. Three passengers were washed away by a large wave while transferring to the life boats. They were only able to reclaim one of them.

This is all a desperate situation going on along the east coast. The lost of the HMS Bounty is a small personal loss. It is the first tall ship I ever toured when it was on display in Florida when I was a child. It had recently been reworked and turned into a cruise ship. I had imagined I would like to sail on it.
