MM, it is a sick, horrific fear so many of us share. It was all I could do not to race to school and drag my child home. Unfortunately, I have been imagining those classrooms and the faces of those babies when they realized a really bad person was in their room, doing an horrific thing.
Please, God, let none of us ever confront anything like that.
MM I have been following the events at Newtown with a heavy heart and pride in those brave teachers who rushed to protect their pupils, but I never followed those thoughts to you. I think that a staff discussion on safety procedures is urgently needed because we now know that the unthinkable can happen, so any measures that can improve protection should be taken as a matter of urgency.
I should be in bed asleep but I am fretting about my sins of omission with regard to household matters leading up to the coming festivities. I have never been so under-prepared because I am taking shelter in distractions instead of facing my responsibilities.
Had a nice (though busy) weekend with the BF. Went down to Oklahoma for his best friend’s surprise birthday party. We stopped in Wichita on the way down to buy some wine. We don’t have a great selection here in town, so we took advantage of a bigger city. We then went to the bday party all afternoon and evening, then overnighted in a hotel. Breakfast with the friend and his family the next morning, then back on the road. Went back through Wichita on the way home (this is the long way) to go see The Hobbit in 3D IMAX. Very enjoyable. Then home ~10pm. I had to take work with me since I wasn’t done grading papers and grades are due today (Monday) at noon. Grading my last paper now. SOOOO ready to just be done with the semester!!
YAY for the last paper and being finished for a few weeks! When do you leave for home? I take it you are driving and won’t be taking the train this year. What route will you take?
What are you giving your BF for Christmas? Do you know what he is giving you?
GRAYMAYNE, when do you expect BIGG in? How long will he be staying? Which of your special places will you be going on Winter Solstice?
MM, it seems there should be an automatic alarm set off if the glass in the front doors is ever broken. Definitely, a panic button would be an absolute necessity. You having to stand there and make a two sentence announcement is ridiculous as we know now. So many times what seems reasonable in theory simply doesn’t work in practice.
Lady Hawke I can only give you one answer – we will be going to our traditional Winter Solstice venue, the Crown Country Inn, Munslow. The chef is a personal friend so we always receive a warm welcome and I approve the idea of a properly laid table, complete with tablecloth. There will be roaring wood fires so that always feels right for the season. BigG’s plans have not been revealed as yet except for his intention to pop down and sort out my Kindle Fire internet connection.
My DS was dismayed this lunchtime to find his dentures giving way:( He has to turn up at the dentist by 9.0am tomorrow for inspection and possible repair by the following day.
Your card arrived today, thankyou:)
LH, I leave for home early early Thursday AM. I am driving. I’m not gonna lie – I’ve been kinda avoiding talking about my route and plans because I didn’t want to hurt feelings (ok, I didn’t want to hurt your feelings). I’m actually meeting my parents in Memphis Thursday night. We’re then going to Graceland Friday morning, then driving back to ATL together Friday afternoon. I know you’re in the area, but I won’t have time to get together. Additionally, my parents don’t know about Leaky, and I’m not comfortable introducing them to people from Leaky. I’m really sorry, and I hope you’re not offended. However, there is a chance I will come back through Memphis on my drive back. In that case, I’ll definitely let you know when I’m coming through and if I’ll be able to stop (my BF will be with me and I’m much more comfortable talking about Leaky to him).
The BF and I aren’t doing formal gifts to each other this year. We’re both strapped for cash and spend a lot of money on each other on a regular basis. He bought a ticket to fly to ATL after Christmas, which is his gift to me. And I just bought a case of wine this weekend, which is pretty much my gift to us. I’ll probably also get him a little something (like put together a stocking) either to leave for him at Christmas, or give to him when he gets to ATL. If we drive back through Memphis and I have enough money, I may try to get us a room at the Peabody. That’ll be a nice little $300 gift… o.O
MM, I’m sorry about all the anxiety the CT tragedy brought. I immediately thought of my friends with children, but I didn’t immediately think of my friends who work in schools. Shame on me. I know college campus changed (read: implemented) a lot of protocol after the Virginia Tech shooting, I imagine a lot of K-12 schools will now be following suit.
Graymayne, your Solstice location sounds lovely! But I’m sorry to hear about the DS’s dentures! And right at the Holidays! Booo! I hope he gets everything fixed with as little as hassle possible.
DR LEW, don’t worry about it. I would like to see you but I understand about your parents and time constraints. At some point in the future you will be traveling through and it will work out. I would be most pleased if it was on this trip back through with your BF but, if not, some other time. When you are at Graceland you will be about five to ten minutes from my parent’s house. They live southeast of Graceland. The area has definitely seen better days. There is a push within the city government to spend some money reclaiming the area and upgrading it. I will be interested in your thoughts on Graceland. It is at its best at Christmas, all the trees sort of distract from the 70s decor.
Someone has walked into the lobby of our hospital where I am on committee and committed suicide in the lobby this morning. I am due to be there tonight for my meeting. Fortunately, we go in the backdoor to some meeting rooms on the ground floor on the backside. Frequently my daughter goes up to the lobby restaurant and shop but tonight I will make sure she does not go up there. They will probably have it all cleaned up and back in business as usual but I don’t want to chance that she sees any evidence of bloodshed.
Lady Hawke An update: BigG arrives tomorrow afternoon and leaves on Thursday afternoon because he has commitments on Friday and Saturday. After that he doesn’t know at this point, which makes catering rather difficult:( Still he will be sorting out my technical problems. We will probably go out for lunch somewhere nice on Wednesday.
GRAYMAYNE, I’m glad BIGG will be home long enough to deal with your issues with your new Kindle and will be available for a nice dinner. I do wish for your sake he could commit to his plans for Christmas. I don’t think men realize fully that food does not just magically appear on plates and that bedrooms are not pristine, ready to be occupied at all times, nor are carpets always freshly vacuumed, nor are fresh linens and towels always clean, folded and ready in linen cabinets.
I have finally finished my tree. I have one more card table of ornaments to put on my parent’s tree. I don’t know if I have ever put them up concurrently. I usually do one or the other first.
My daughter is working a sinus infection so we ended up at the doctor yesterday for antibiotics. So, she is getting these extra two days out of school with a doctor’s excuse. So, we are doing what we would have done anyway, with the exception of the trip to the doctor, but now her absence does not count against her.
I’m certain she is happy not to be at school because she doesn’t feel the best all the time. Then, she will surface from the temporary malaise and be giggly, happy and chatty for awhile.
We are headed out to work our way towards my parent’s house to finish their tree with stops along the way.
I was washing dishes this morning when the power went off. I contionued washing the dishes since I do them by feel to see if they are clean. Luckily the power was not off for long.
I am feeling better today. The tragedy has made me a little depressed.
My Christmas card holder is getting full. This always makes me smile when I look at them. I just realized that it is a week until Christmas. I have already gave Beth the money to help out on Christmas dinner. Since I don’t cook the meal and have everyone over at my house, I always make sure I buy the ham and give enough money to cover part of the food. When we lived at the lake, a lot of the holiday meals were at my house. If we had extended family, we usually had the meals at Beth’s because she has the largest house.
Today I received cards from Deanie and Graymayne, which made me very happy, thankyou,
Lady Hawke, I am so pleased both trees are pretty much done, and seemingly, once you got going, not too much stress was involved.
I hope your daughter feels better soon. I have everything crossed here that we all stay well. We ARE going to enjoy Christmas!
LEW, have a safe trip home, and a wonderful Christmas. xx
BigG arrived early afternoon and sorted out my problems in about one minute flat! I have to say that as my first experience of touch screen technology it is a nightmare finding my way around. Everything I tackle seems to be a lot more difficult to fathom than I expected because I have to learn the unspoken rules. I suppose I will get the hang of it before long but my first Kindle was a lot more user friendly.
Graymayne, although we have bought my daughter a Kindle Fire for Christmas, I have been a Very Good Girl and have not set it up or played with it yet! I am pleased BigG got yours working so quickly. I found the touch screen on my iPad challenging for a while, but it becomes natural very quickly, believe me, it’s wonderful! Enjoy!
I am NOT touch screen friendly. Do not even like touch pads. It is a mouse for me.
Cool G.: Got your card today.
Do not know about others but I am getting tired of Facebook. It will not load correctly half the time. and
all the extra stuff and the auto load adds coming in April. I most likely will not be there much longer. The
people are great, it’s the site that I am getting tired of.
I have finished both trees. It is so nice to sit with Christmas music playing with the trees lit and just listen and look and remember.
GRAYMAYNE, I’m glad your Kindle was so easily brought into line. Now, the hard part, figuring it out when you aren’t 12 years old.
Putting Christmas lights around random windows and along shelves
Hi everyone! Thanks for everyone who has sent Christmas cards that I’ve received! (I’d make a list, but my cards are in another room and I’m writing a story for my school newspaper right now..)
I’ve been pretty busy with classes. I don’t know if I mentioned, but I took on two editorial positions at my school’s newspaper this semester. I was working as the News Editor (which includes having to design the front pages for the six issues that we put out), and online editor. Beyond that, I had two assistants, and I was responsible for teaching them pretty much everything I’ve learned so they can take over for me come next semester.
I’ve also gotten into photography, and I spent a lot of time with the camera I bought back in April or May. Also managed to break that camera, and I bought a new one a month or two ago, and I love it even more.
I finished up classes yesterday, but I have a few more newspaper-related things I’m still tying up. I’m writing a story now, I have competition submissions to send in tomorrow and a few things to tweak on our website.
Breaking into the Headmistress’ room and spreading glitter all over
Decorating the hallways with wreaths
wraps christmas lights around the Headmistress’ chair and desk, pins strings of lights to the wall, and sets a radio in the corner to play Christmas music … loudly
Follows Adella down the hallway, lights being strung along random walls and over the paintings, pictures and statues already about the castle
Hi Lady Hawke!!! How have you been? I have been good, very busy with school! Looking forward to having a bit of a break even though it will be pretty busy.
goes and puts pictures around my emo couch of women in santa hats
Secretly hopes Adella doesn’t get mad about that one
