Today I found a box with more old photos and letters. There was a letter written in 1878 by my great great grandfather. There was also a certificate of achievement for the 1877-1878 school year with my great grandmother’s name on it, the one for which I was named.
Yesterday I found letters from the governor’s mansion in New York addressed to this same great grandmother, thanking her for letters she had written in support of Governor Dewey and for handmade lacework she had sent his wife.
There was also a letter on White House stationery from Margaret Truman, the daughter of President Truman. Margaret had been on a radio show on which she had sung. She received some bad reviews and my great grandmother wrote a letter to her in support of her effort.
My great grandmother was more in support of Dewey’s policies but still supported Margaret’s attempt at singing. You might recall Dewey ran against Truman for the presidency. The headlines the next day indicated Dewey had won when in truth Truman retained his presidency for his second term.
I found letters from my grandmother’s brother, written from France during WWI. He wrote a letter on Sept. 28, 1918 indicating they were moving to the front. On Sept. 29 his leg was blown off and he died from complications in January. The unopened letters that were mailed to him after his death but before the family knew he had passed away had been returned with his possessions and were still in the box.
I finished my father’s closet, so it is empty except for his cothing and the items we are leaving for an estate sale.
I also finished packing the contents of the buffet where my mother kept her china, crystal and tableclothes.
I had too much Scotch last night at a University function and today has been less than steller. I’m worse than my students…
?hangs head in mock shame??
We had some teriffic news today. Son had an orthodontist appointment, AND, he goes back in 9 weeks to have the traintracks removed!!!! Finally he will be free of bits of metal attached to his body. I am extraordinarily happy, even happier than he is, I think, lol!
Daughter had a good day too. She took part in a big inter-school cross country competition, and she really enjoyed it. Though she did refer to part of the course as “The Hill of Doom,” bless! We don’t know how her school did yet, but she had a wonderful time.
Dr. LEW, ouch! Poor you!
Lady Hawke, is this the relative that is buried in an English graveyard?
Thanks, asti, but seeing as I brought it on myself, I"m not sure I’m deserving of sympathy. ;)
So glad to hear that you’ve had some good news!
It didn’t matter. I had to pay the full price for the glasses. They filled out a form so Medicare will reinburse me but they said not be surprised if it took 6 months before they put the amount in my checking account. It is a good thing I had enough money to pay for my glasses. She did say that without my glasses I wasn’t legal to drive because of my stymatism. I actually have 20/20 in one eye but the other definately needs help.
I was also at the dentist today and next week I might be booking an appointment with my optician, I am well overdue for an examination and I definitely need new reading glasses.
Asti Three cheers for good news.
Lady Hawke I am glad to hear that some of your clearing-out work is proving very interesting with regard to family history. It will help to sweeten the pill of house clearing. Has your daughter’s eye infection cleared up by the way?
By dint of flicking around the TV stations I ended up having a really good night of documentary programmes so my head is crammed full of facts. We are also making good use of recording programmes that clash with regard to scheduling. We really disapproved of Lewis being screened in one-hour slots instead of the traditional two hours. The plots in detective fiction are too involved to recall a week later, especially at our age, so we have recorded this week’s Part 1 and will record Part 2 next week so that we can watch them in sequence in a two-hour slot of our choice.
We are being warned of possible snow showers this weekend, just when I felt like coming out of hibernation:(
ASTI, my great uncle is buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery west of London, the same cemtery contains a civilian section, a Muslim section where Dodie Fayed is buried, and military cemteries for the British Commonwealth and Allied nations. It is on the train line running west out of London. He was originally buried in a cemetery in Manchester and moved to Brookwood.
ASTI, great news about the braces being removed. I’m sure you are all excited. I remember how exciting it was to have my braces removed. I’m impressed with anyone who can run. That is one of my greatest failings.
My daughter’s eye cleared up the next day after I reported she was having difficulties. I think she was really just having a severe allergic reaction. I have had such severe ones my eye has become pulpy and nothing more was done for me than to give me an antihistimine.
It was very mild today, 70 F (21 C). Unfortunately, we are expecting rain tonight and a high of 52 F (11.1 C) tomorrow. I realize it is early February and I should not complain about temperatures like that. I think since we have never really had winter again for the second year we are ready to move on to spring and make it official.
BIG BANG THEORY was based on a series of fights over Harry Potter spoilers which are dropped in conversations. One of the characters is finally reading the books which he has unreasonably avoided reading for years. He has just started HBP and the other character tells him Dumbledore dies in HBP. They get into a fight about it and in vengeance for some things that are said another spoiler is dropped about Dobby dying in DH. The character who was reading stalks out and goes to the apartment across the hall where his girlfriend lives and she drops the spoiler that Harry and Ginny become a couple.
I thought it was interesting they waited this long to have spoiler fights over Harry.
My avatar is gone. I made the post and Leaky kicked me out. So, I logged back in and now my avatar is gone but the post did post. I wonder if my avatar will be back when I post this one.
I haven’t watched new episodes of BBT in a LONG time (I watch them on syndication). I’ll have to see if I can find this one!
Lady Hawke Your avatar appears for me.
Everything appears wet outside but it has not rained. Probably a mist has made everything wet. We are suppose to miss the big snow storm.
I woke up several times during the night but went back to sleep. I didn’t wake up for good until my phone alarm went off at 9 AM. The TV was on History2 and it is about dinosaurs. So of course I have just been watching this.
Dr LEW We knew the shame was “mock”. We really do know you too well. Don’t let your students find out about us! ;)
My DS and I had a long walk by a river today, in bright, cold sunshine. It was really lovely.
I have been a busy bunny, reading both for LemonFaerie, and for Wolfie’s rewrites. I seriously wish I did this for a living!
LEW, good to see you back on form!
Blizzard Nemo has arrived, but I’m tucked cozily inside. There’s actually a driving ban in place for the first time since the Blizzard of ‘78. Emergency and utility crews are allowed; anyone else on the road could face a fine up to $500 and a year in jail! I can’t imagine they’ll strictly enforce this though…it seems to me the police will too busy handling the actual emergencies caused by the storm to be pulling over and arresting drivers. The latest forecast for my area calls for us to get 18-24 inches. It’s going to be ever so much fun shoveling that tomorrow. :/
It has only started to get bad here in the last two hours, so I definitely think we could have had a half day of school with no problem, but I suppose it’s better to be safe. Now our last day will be Tuesday, June 25 if there are no other cancellations. I originally wanted to leave for LeakyCon on the Monday, but after our hurricane days off, planned to push it to first thing Tuesday morning. Now I’ll either have to look into leaving really late that night or waiting until Wednesday. It’s disappointing, but better than not going at all.
I had intended to take advantage of the day off to get things done, but it has mostly been a lazy day. (However, getting through several of the tv shows on my DVR and watching the percentage of space used drop has felt oddly productive, lol.) Now I’m going to attempt to get a few things done on the computer, so I’ll probably be lurking through the evening.
ASTI, maybe once WOLFIE and LEMON are published they could give you a reference as a proof reader. That was nice for you to have a walk. We haven’t done that in a very long time. My DS did call me and take me to lunch, the second time in two months. He had news and didn’t want to tell me over the phone. His boss assures him they will not be involved in the second wave of reorganization that is upcoming. I do hope he is right. It eases my mind a bit but not enough to stop worrying entirely. We have been reorganized right out of a job in the past. Even if you have been reorganized it feels like having been fired and it still results in no paycheck.
JEN, are there any products to at least cover your windows so you don’t have to scrape them once you have shoveled your car out? The most snow we have ever had was a fluke occurence 45 years ago when we had 18 inches. We had 14 inches one time since. Usually 4 inches is the absolute most we can manage and 2 inches is the average amount if we get more than a dusting.
I have been sitting here while the laundry runs eating garlic stuffed olives and hummus with pita. I felt a overwhelming desire for garlic. The dust at my parent’s house has made my throat feel raspy and my nose stuffy. The garlic felt like a way of warding off the ill feeling.
I did empty the curved glass china cabinet which belonged to my grandmother today. It took three large boxes and one small one. The cabinet was full of crystal, porcelain and cut glass. Neither my mother or I had ever interfered with the contents on my grandmother’s china cabinet and my mother has been married to my father for 60 years. He has always done the handling and wrapping. She followed me to the dining room and watched me pack it and asked to see some of the items. Daddy was still in bed so it was quite revolutionary for her. When and if I come into command of the contents of that cabinet I am going to reduce the amount of it, keep the best and use it. There are items my grandmother received as wedding presents 91 years ago that are brand new, never used. My mother used her good things and her mother’s good things. We have good memories of them. This stuff has just been sitting there looking sparkly for almost 100 years.
It is amazing to me that my mother followed my father’s wishes so closely for so long. My grandmother has been gone 40 years. You would have thought her womanly things would have fallen under my mother’s control after her death.
Lights are flickering, so the power may be going soon. It’s definitely nasty out there.
LH, I’m not sure if there’s anything to cover windows. I actually use the shovel to just push most of the snow off the car and then the defrosters do most of the work if there’s ice on the windows, so there’s usually not too much scraping to do. Shoveling around the car is definitely the worst of it. Fortunately, I don’t have to be anywhere tomorrow, so I can take my time going out in stages to do a little bit at a time.
JEN, that is good. Our snow almost always starts with a layer of ice on the windows so there is rarely any brushing it off. Glad you don’t have to be anywhere tomorrow.
Morning all! Power went out around 10:15 last night, and there’s no ETA for when it might be back on. I’m in bed with blankets piled on because it’s freezing in here! (Don’t know how cold because my thermostat is off with the power.) I’ll try to update again later, but I want to conserve the power on my phone, so I’m not sure when.
Thermostat is on now; it must have a backup battery that hasn’t kicked in when I looked last night. It’s 47 degrees in here. I’m doing okay in bed under blankets, but really wish I had a cup of coffee! Electric company still hasn’t posted expected repair time; it just says “assessing damage.” Driving ban in place until 1pm – not that I’ll have my car out any time soon. I’m in no hurry to go out and shovel when I won’t even be able to get really warm back inside. Then again, if I can at least get into my car, I can turn it on and warm up in there for a while, so I may try to trek out there soon.
East coasters – stay safe and warm!
Trying to get in some work this morning. Apparently the BF is moving in this weekend…
DR. LEW, WOW!!!! I’ve never had to make room for someone in my space or someone things up until now. Are you having to get rid of some of your things to make room for his? Does he have real furniture?
Woo Hoo Dr LEW that’s a big step…
I am constantly amazed by what your parents have LH that is a lot of history there…
hope you are ok Jen & and all of you on the East Coast. My sister still lives in Upstate NY, haven’t heard how things are for her…
I am flurking
Dr. LEW, congratulations to you and the BF! I send my love and very best wishes to both of you. And you are going to have to come up with a Leaky name for him!
Jen, I hope hope hope you have power and heat by now.
