MM, I would love to but all my copies are in purgatory, locked up in the storage locker. The only Harry book I can access is a UK paperback copy of DH which I found and purchased after the little incident at my house.

ASTI, did you get your daughter off to France smoothly? Did she sleep at all?

I am taking a break. I was mowing the front yard. I have inside the fence and outside the fence done. I need to mow next door in front of the fense and then try to get the back yard mowed. I may have to wait until tomorrow to do this. At least I got more mowed today than I did last week. Isn’t it funny that when your grandchildren get old enough to help you mow, they suddendly have paying jobs and have no time to help you. My grandson came over to visit last night but since he is starting a new job, I did not even ask him to help me mow.

Cool G Ask!! They may not even have noticed that it needs doing. I used to think people were ignoring the obvious, but now I am sure they don’t look and literally never even think of some things. ;)

MM I may start re-listening to them. I have all 7 on CDs and can listen to about 2 hours each day during my commutes. Should we all pllan to start each book on the same day? Or just read (listen) at our own pace? Or do one or two chapters a day and come discuss one day’s chapter(s) the next day? Or read and comment as something “new” occurs to us? ;)

Off to try and get my sinuses clear. ;)

MM, if I have to I will purchase used paperbacks, especially if we are going to read a chapter of two and actually meet here to talk about them.

COOLG, I agree with DEANIE. Your grandchildren and children have their own stuff on their minds. If you don’t call your needs to their attention they might just not notice. It is not good to get in the habit of thinking other people are mind readers. Once you tell them you need their help and no one helps you then is the time to take things into your own hands and feel a bit irritated. It may be they would willingly help you just wake them up so they can see what you need.

I am doing laundry again. It feels like a vacation. I will go later, as I did yesterday, and unpack another box or two.

My mother just called. They have been in their apartment for two weeks but she has not had to try to wash clothes until today. She had everything clean before the move. They usually only dress to go out one day a week and my mother had new clothes to go to the funeral. So, today she loaded the washer and nothing happened. The water hoses are hooked up and it is plugged in but when she tried to start it nothing happened.

It there a reset button on the fuse on the back of a washer that may need to be pushed?

My DS has suggested going over there and flipping the fuses in the fuse box.

LadyHawke: Excuse me for asking but the first rule of washer repair is to make sure the
thing is plugged in.

I know I am setting myself up but I went to the ENT doc today and he changed my acid reflux med.
He also did a hearing test and found that a big part of my hearing lose is due to a vacuum behind
each eardrum thus not allowing the eardrums to do the voodoo that they do.

Good evening!

Well, my house seems very empty without my daughter, not to mention quiet, lol! We got her to the coach on time, and waved her off before coming home for copious amounts of coffee before work!
At about 4pm, I got a text from the school saying, “Just to let you know, the children have reached the Chateau safely, and the weather is lovely,” which I thought was a really nice gesture.

Lady Hawke, they went on a ferry, taking about 6 hours. There are faster ferries, but the faster ones are a lot bouncier and are more likely to make you seasick. They took the fast ferry on last years trip, and about 11 of the children and two teachers were ill!

Ironsos, is the hearing thing something they can solve, or are you stuck with it?

I would enjoy reading Harry as a group, and talking about it again!

Asti: Basic problem is not correctable but is bypassed with a hearing aid. My health plans will not cover
it but not a huge problem yet. It does not appear to be getting worse.

Hello Korey, it’s good to see you!

Ironsos, that is a big shame about your health plan. I hope you’ll be able to save enough to get the aids.

I miss my little girl! It is 10.30 in France, they’re an hour ahead of us, so I really hope she is asleep. Tomorrow they are visiting a French market…..a chance to practise their French, and spend some Euro’s…. Then onto a Cathedral and then a WW2 memorial museum.

I went over to my parent’s apartments and ascertained it was hooked up and I flipped the breakers. I tried to turn the machine on and it hummed. They had hooked the water up but they had not turned the water on. The machine was willing to work but had no water. That was quickly rectified.

IRONSOS, I don’t know if you would be a candidate for this or not. From what you describe it sounds as if you have some sort of permanent conductive hearing loss. Since this is not a conventional hearing aid and is surgically implanted some insurance will pay for them.

http://www.umm.edu/otolaryngology/baha.htm

ASTI, I am quite jealous of your daughter, even if she is in France with a bunch of children. I don’t blame them for taking the slow ferry. You may remember when my daughter and I went to Washington, DC on the bus two years ago there were sick children before we were 100 miles from home.

Hi, KOREY, maybe you will have some time to come visit?

Posted by Lady Hawke on April 30, 2013, 07:39 PM report to moderator

I was going to suggest that the water might not be on. Since most machine manufacturers suggest turning the water off between uses and the movers did not want to be the discoverers of any plumbing malfunctions, it seemed possible. I’m glad it was that simple. ;)

Oh! And are the hoses on the correct outlets (hot to hot)? We had friends who could not wash in cold and that was the problem. It took us 2 minutes and they had been like that for almost a year. The movers had done the hookup and they just assumed it had been done right. :)

LadyHawke: The doctor said it had something to due with the Eustachian tube. He felt that a
regular hearing aid would help. He said I could try a hearing enhancement device and see if
I liked it.

Looked at the article. The audiologist did a bone conductive and ear pressure test as part of the workup.

One of the die hard assistive listening devices out there is the William’s Sound Pocket Talker. It is a high quality war horse.

http://www.amazon.com/Williams-Sound-PKT-D1-Pocketalker/dp/B005IYDLR2

The Sennheiser Infrared Amplifier is a good wireless television/stereo amplifier.

http://www.harriscomm.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1248_1298&products_id=18968&hcCsid=068517acbff7770d5ef8ef35404b9ec8

The Williams Sound Pocket Talker can be placed in your pocket and might pick up enough amplification from the TV or Stereo to suit you but it is more for person to person communication.

These are both a bit pricey but they have been around forever and are sort the “go to” devices for people who aren’t getting hearing aids.

You can purchase similar devices for less but the quality might not be as good and they might not be as durable. See if you could purchase either or both of these with the option to try them and return them if they don’t suit you.

DEANIE, I didn’t check to see if the water was connected properly. I suppose I should caution my mother to check if the cold water is really cold. She mostly washes in cold or warm but almost never hot. So, I guess we can run a cold wash and see if it is cold.

Happy May Day

It is my Mother’s birthday. I usually post a birthday wish on my brother’s wall today. His birthday is the same day as Laura’s but if I don’t do it today, I will forget.

I think it must be time for the Kentucky Derby. They are posting all the things you can no longer bring in to the track. Now you can’t bring in a detachable camera lense. That is bad news for people who have these expesive cameras. Last year you couldn’t bring in an umbrella and it rained. Hmm they are doing the news at the track. A lot of people milling around. Yes the steam boat races are today and the derby is Saturday. We are having warm weather for it.

Lady Hawke the hoses are probably connected to the right spigots, but it can happen. ;)

It is my eldest sister’s wedding anniversary. I think it’s their 49th, but it could be 48th or 50th. I don’t remember if they got married just before my 11th birthday, 12th birthday or 13th birthday. I sent her a silver bowl for their 25th and she fussed because it was a year early. She sure as heck did not return the bowl, though. ;)

Sitting here tied to the computer. ;)

I have a sleep test tonight, so I took tomorrow off. The literature looks like they will just have me take a series of short naps with perhaps one longer nap in there somewhere. ;)

I need to run about 5 more loads of laundry plus the loads that are waiting for me in the washer and dryer. And I don’t really have the energy to mess with it. Maybe tomorrow I’ll do a couple of loads. ;)

Overcast and 63 F (17.2 C) not frosty, but too cool to spend too much time out there, especially in the wind in the city. ;)

Good evening!

My DS told me tonight that Chris Columbus has co written a book, and it has been recommended by JK……the only book, apparently, that she has ever allowed her name to help publicise. It is a children’s book called House of Secrets, and is the first of a series. I think it might be worth a look!

Today was Beltane in the Celtic calendar so we celebrated in the usual way by going out to lunch at this place:
http://www.thecowshedrestaurant.co.uk/
Photos and account in the usual place.

It was very strange to see Blackthorn bushes still in blossom on May 1st, they normally flower in February! I am usually looking to see if the hawthorn trees/hedges are in blossom at this time but it has been so cold for so long that the leaves are only just out of their buds and the flower buds are visible yet.

I must be blind. I don’t seem to be able to find a video on the restaurant website.

GRAYMAYNE, I don’t appear to have checked in yesterday at all. So, I wish you a Belated Happy Beltane!

I had quite a long day yesterday. We made two more trips to the house. My mother remembered something she was afraid had been left behind so we went to check. The item she wanted was not there and was found later in a box at the apartment. While we were there she had a moment of inspiration and realized there was yet another item she wanted and she sent me looking for it. Her brother had built a small model of an Army jeep out of scraps before WWII. It seems it has been on an old kitchen cabinet in the garage for 37 years. I cannot honestly say if I have ever noticed it. At any rate my mother was able to save a sentimental item at the last minute. The estate sale people are in the house today.

I had to go back and save an envelope full of documentation on the improvements made to the house, owner’s manuals for the appliances and the blueprints and elevations on the house. I had left it on a shelf for the realtor, thinking it would be of value to him. The estate people had been in and had just strewn the contents around, not understanding their significance. It really irritated me they didn’t recognize something of value in regard to the house. So, I saved it to hand directly to the realtor.

We did our regular grocery run and visited the post office, bank and dollar store. Unfortunately when we arrived to pick my daughter up from school she called to tell me she had a drama club audition workshop which would last until 5 PM. So, that meant I went back to my parent’s apartment to unpack to kill time until time to pick her up to go to dinner. So, that put us much later eating than usual and much later reaching home.

I believe once we have the house completely out of our hands my Wednesdays will be less hectic.
