I’ve just seen an interesting trailer for The Fifth Estate directed by Bill Condon (Breaking Dawn 1&2) starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange, the man at the centre of the Wikileaks affair. David Thewlis (Remus Lupin) is also in the cast, as is Stanley Tucci (Hunger Games).

I took my daughter to a YA book writer’s tour last night. Aimee Carter, the author of The Goddess Test series, has been on a book tour for the last eleven days. News reached her while on this tour of the JK Rowling book. She has been asking at each store they have visitied if they have a copy and, of course, no one has a copy.

She is a Harry Potter fan, was eleven the year PS/SS came out. She said she read the first four books obsessively and repetitively until OftP came out.

So, she really wants a copy of TCC, just like the rest of us. I was sitting in the front row with my daughter last night and her eyes got big and she asked me if that was really a first edition I was holding. So, she wanted a real copy of the book NOW and she was interested in the first edition. When I wouldn’t sell it she asked if she could just look at it.

I am waiting on the reviews from you all befor I purchase the book. I did go the other day to see if it was on Kindel and it is. I read mysteries all the time so I should like it but still I will wait.

I was busy the last several days. My oldest daughter came in from NC Friday. There was also the graduation party on Sunday. Monday we just relaxed in the pool most of the day. Then we went to the county fair Monday night. My daughter and grandsons left for home yesterday. I hope it won’t be another 2 years before I see them again.

Cool G you can always download a sample onto your Kindle and read a sample of the book – it’s the prologue and the first chapter.

Deanie My husband was ambivalent about his CPAP machine also. However, he has used it every night since the first night and has noticed a huge difference in his quality of life. He did not realize he wasn’t sleeping until that point. (I did though)

My copy of TCC has been dispatched and should be with me by July 19th:)

Our heatwave continues so I am not exerting myself. I sat in the shade in the garden this morning until noon, quite comfortable because of a cooling breeze, but I haven’t been out since. We have had several late evenings with clear skies so I go out to enjoy the stars but the down side is that the flat feels very hot in comparison.

Oh, I know I’m not sleeping, but mostly it seems to be because of my sinuses. They seem to me to be the cause of my inability to breathe while lying down. So if I cannot get the mask off easily to try to clear my sinuses, it may be difficult for me to adapt to it. ;)

GRAYMAYNE, I saw one of the reasons the Duchess of Cambridge made the move to her parent’s house was because the “cottage” at Kensington Palace has no AC. I’m certain she was glad to be home with her parents during her final stages of waiting but I’m surprised she did not insist on a discretely placed window unit somewhere in the cottage out of sight where it would not have spoiled the appearance of the place.

When I’m not reading I am obsessively checking online to see if there has been some movement on the part of the Duchess.

Considering her sister looks so like her I suppose they could pad her up and put her in a car headed back to Kensington Palace and once the paparazzi has taken off after her, they could slip the real Duchess in a back door at the hospital.

hellooooooooooooooo Leaky! It’s been a while… according to my Hufflebug profile it’s been about 4 months :O have been nutty as usual, with some added twists. Some were good, others not so much. Nothing major, so I guess such is life!! But naturally i heard about TCC and thought of all of you, and whether any of you had gotten copies! LH how exciting you got a copy! And Graymayne only a couple more days! :) :) :) I am very curious as I really enjoy detective novels, so I"m sure that once things calm down (relatively speaking) I will order mine! I never did get Casual Vacancy – I read the first chapter online and it didn’t grab me sufficiently to buy it, and then real life intervened. But TCC sounds much more up my alley!

Since the NY Times limited the # of free articles, I’ve started reading the BBC online. It’s great reading and very interesting to see a different perspective!! And I learn about some US events more thoroughly than reading the NYT and CNN! Which is somewhat odd.

As a result I have become far more interested in soccer. So this headline grabbed my attention – the president of FIFA wants the 2022 World Cup to be in the winter months since they chose Qatar as the location and it’s too hot in the summer. However, this will conflict with many European leagues’ normal schedules, so the decision to move to winter needs to happen now. This begs the question of who decided, during the selection process, that Qatar in the summer would be a great venue for intense outdoor sport? Apparently they plan to play in air conditioned stadiums. The article goes on to say that FIFA’s pres did not realize that such heat is not healthy for players (or fans, though he didn’t mention them, though the fans would have to travel outdoors to the stadiums – minor details!!). The article also says that Qatar can reach temps up to 50C (122F). Really? Being that hot is unhealthy? I had no idea! This is the best quote from FIFA’s pres: “There has been a fresh medical investigation into what it would be like to play football there in the summer and we have to take into account the health, not of the spectators, but of the players,” he told Sky Germany. What a kind, understadning statement. I wonder how much that medical investigation cost. I’m having one of those “well, DUH” moments.

Anyhow I hope everyone is doing well and keeping cool! it’s only supposed to be 35/90 here tomorrow! yeah!

leaving out lots autorefilling pitchers of chocolate chip ice cream, fruit smoothies, iced coffee/tea, appletinis, PBR, chilled white wine, and of course, *MM*argaritas!!!!!!!

I think I need a childs mask for the CPAP machine. I have a smaller than average head and there seems to be an abundance of strap on the headset and it slides around a bit. I do not wear hats because the only ones that fit properly are sized for children.

The mask I have now is a nasal mask and is supposed to cover only the nose. It actually hits the top of my upper lip and the inside corners of my eyes. There was no air leakage in the office, but I was upright in the office. When I lie down, in the position in which I normally sleep, I can feel air blowing on my eyes.Ii can wiggle the mask around a bit and get that to stop, but then it is actually on my upper lip. I need to call and see if I can swap out the mask or if I need to keep this one until the 3 month mark. ;)

Good evening!

Son had orthodontist today……..good news! He doesn’t have to go back for 9 months, AND he only has to wear his retainer at night!

The Weather continues! I know I said I wasn’t going to complain, but the two mile walk involved in collecting daughter from school is beginning to be not fun!

Hi, Huff! Raising glass of wine! Good to see you.

I’ve finished it. MUCH, MUCH, MUCH BETTER than A CASUAL VACANCY.

I don’t normally read murder mysteries so I can’t make much of a comparison. The only murder mystery series I read is the MONKEYWRENCH series by P J Tracy. Those characters are a bit over the top and the writing is amusing but smart.

I do know I read this book at every available moment since I picked it up. I read far too late into the night, have done without sleep to read it.

I thought I knew who did it. There was something “fishy” about a lot of the characters but I didn’t quite get it because what occurred to me didn’t make sense. So, I settled on the next closest alternative.

I will be happy to read the next installment. I liked the two main characters immensely, not as much as Harry and company.

COOLG, since you read murder mysteries it is possible you will think it very predictable or not exciting enough. Most of the book is the main character visiting all sorts of characters and interviewing them with his little notebook and pen. There isn’t a lot of “running and screaming”, instead a lot of analyzing of details.

I couldn’t stop reading it. I stopped reading A CASUAL VACANCY every chance I could make. I am surprised I ever finished it. It was a chore.

This book was no chore to read for me.

I got a text from Graymayne last night, saying she has internet problems, so that is why we have not seen her.

I got an email from Amazon….my Cuckoo is on it’s way. I have read a fair few of that genre, so I am looking forward very much to seeing how she does. Lady Hawke, we have discusses how clearly you could “hear” her voice in TCV, is it the same in this one?

Off to sit in a cold bath, (the highlight of my day at the moment, lol,) see you in a bit!

There are moments when her voice comes through more clearly than others, many times in her whimsical description of characters. Strangely, I did not find it as obvious as in The Casual Vacancy where you felt you were reading a very uncomfortable HP novel. In this case I feel she was tweaking her natural voice into that of a murder mystery writer but her natural style would slip through now and again. She also used the fateful word “sloping” one time. I had never heard he word “sloping” as a verb until HP. It isn’t in common American usage. So, I have ever since associated it with JKR. If I had read this book without knowing it was her alarm bells would have started going off in my head. Then, I would have looked back on some of the descriptions of people and their nervous tics and behavior and I would have started wondering. Much of the dialogue contains an inordinate number of obscenities. They are completely within reasonable use considering the characters who are speaking in that manner, so that didn’t bother me, but it did obscure some of her normal dialogue. There was no one as quick of tongue as Ron or Hermione, no one teasing anyone else in a loving but irritable manner. Most of the characters are very guarded, suspicious, or hostile when they speak.

We have some errands to run. I have to take some meds over to my parent’s apartment. Yesterday ran long and we didn’t make the pharmacy so I didn’t refill the boxes. I need to go and make some photocopies on legal size paper. My daughter wants to go and look in some antique shops.

I will go back to CoS now. At least I can return to JKR instead of having to wrap my head around a different author.

There a lots of details from lots of different sources. Of course, we know some of those details are terribly important and some are not. My mind did not connect the correct details together on its own. The last fifty pages or so of the book contains a lot of explanation of how he deduced who the murderer was from all these disparate bits of information.

It isn’t structured as it is in Harry when you know Harry has found a bit of information because he tells Ron and Hermione and they go follow up on it and find another bit of information and go follow up on it. So, you aren’t following the trail on this one. All this information is gathered, sometimes you aren’t even cued to what is important. You are supposed to notice on your own. So, it is a bit of work to delve through it. He doesn’t discuss his findings are freely with his assistant as Harry does with Ron and Hermione. A lot of time he is sending her out on her own or she is going out on her own, following her own initiative. Most of the time he isn’t clueing her in on what he expects her to find. She just comes back with more information he adds to his files. It is shared with the reader but you don’t know what part of it is important.

Lady Hawke, I find your observations very interesting, and can’t wait to read it myself. *Graymayne * texted me again to say that her copy arrived this morning. Her internet problems will be ongoing until Monday.

Aloha! ;)

Just hanging out. I learned how to take my CPAP mask apart and gave it a thorough cleaning. Getting the straps back on was a bit of a puzzle until I just wrapped it around my head and only lightly set the adjustments. Then I actually set them and smoothed down the velcro fasteners. I should have all the pieces sorted by the time I need to replace it in October. ;)

I have just finished the part where he decides to take the case. I am a proponent of using better words instead of cussing to make a point. I usually consider that authors use swearing for “shock value” rather than to make a valid point. Yes I do swear a bit, but not to the extent that I am incapable of having verbal a conversation without it. And there are some words or phrases that I never use. Anyone can edit their written conversations but some people have no verbal filter. ;)

DEANIE, most of the obscenities in the book are words I have never and will NEVER use. The characters in the book are people who would definitely use this sort of language. We know JKR has a marvelous ability to express herself without resorting to that sort of language so that means she chose to use it. I really don’t think she is doing it to distance herself from the HP books. It is just the sort of people who populate these new books. They are not Lucius Malfoys. As nasty as Lucius Malfoy is he is conscious of his “good breeding” and is likely to curse in a creative and elegant way, not resort to filthy street language.

The detective spends his time interviewing all sorts of really unsavory people, both down and out and vicious, “new rich” sociopathic people of excessive wealth. Most of those people probably have very few scruples in how they speak and express themselves. These are not the sort of people who care about expressing themselves without resorting to obscenities.

The bad language is not within the prose. It is within the dialogue of most of the nasty characters.

I have never been cursed out by a drugged out street person who used elegant, witty language. They just used every filthy word that could tumble out of their mouths. Yes, these characters are speaking for shock value because that is the only way they know to speak, to the point it has gone beyond shock value; they have no idea how to speak otherwise.

So, no, I don’t like the language and I find it personally unappealing but I can hardly imagine most of these characters would speak any other way.

Good evening!

There has been a fairly strong breeze today which has made being outside more bearable, and being inside positively pleasant.
DS and son were golfing all day, (they won,) so I suggested daughter cook her pizza for her and I to have for tea. She did a very good job, and it was very tasty! It took me about three hours to work my way through all the washing up she managed to create, lol!

Just doing laundry and chores. We are trying to watch Doctor Zhivago but so far it has been in bits and pieces and it is not an easy movie to watch in short snippets.

My DS arrived home on Friday evening without his wallet. So, he and I went back to his office looking for it and retraced his steps to a meeting room at his company’s worldwide headquarters. We checked the parking lots. Unless the wallet is lying somewhere so obvious we can’t see it, he probably had his hands full and put it down somewhere temporarily like the top of his car and drove off and it fell off somewhere.

He spent yesterday morning cancelling his credit cards and other important cards. Until he finds the wallet or determines he isn’t going to find it and decides to go and acquire another driver’s license I am going to be driving him to and from work. This is going to be an extremely unpleasant way to spend the last bit of summer. He will have to take a day off and go get a new social security card because he unfortunately had it in his wallet which is not where it should have been. He must have that before he can go stand in line for a new driver’s license. Either way, I am shackled to him while he does so.

Does anyone here know about plumbing?
Our water tank appears not to be filling properly. I don’t know if there is something wrong, or if it is just general low pressure due to demand? I just went for my bath/shower, and the water stopped mid shampoo. I had to finish off at the kitchen sink with a kettle, which was interesting, to say the least!
DS has been in the loft, and all seems to be in order……….any suggestions?

We lost the breeze today, and it’s been very warm. They are threatening us with thunderstorms midweek. Apparently, this has been the longest period of hot weather we have had since 2006, which I find astonishing! I knew our summers have been bad, but wow, really!?

Lady Hawke, what an irritation. I hope the lost wallet doesn’t cause too many problems for either of you.
