Harry Potter Today:

from: Logan  - One thing I think would be great to mention on a future edition of the segment is Muggle Quidditch, which has been growing bigger and bigger as we get farther away from the end of the series. The International Quidditch Association has done a great job, I think, of encouraging Quidditch as a sport while making sure it stays true to its HP-fandom roots

– The IQA is hosting a tournament next weekend Saturday, April 2 in Los Angeles, the HPA, Whismsic Alley, and The Remus Lupins will be in attendance -I’m going, should be good time :) http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=195852517107683

From Katherine: on April 10th, there is going to be
a Duality Ball at Eastern Michigan University’s campus that will have
The Whomping Willows, The Moaning Myrtles, Justin Finch Fletchley,
Snidget, Kwikspell and, my favorite, Seen and Unforeseen making their
first on stage appearance! It starts at 6pm and is $10 to enter. The
theme is Good vs. Evil, wear white formal wear if you represent
Dumbledore’s Army and black formal wear if you represent Death Eaters.
It’s done through The Fifth House aka the guys who did the Expeditious
2010 convention!

(Lets talk about how common shows like these still are, particularly around universities with english department budgets)

Chunk By Chunk -

Chapter 26th – Gringotts

The trio has a plan to go in the Lestrange vault to steal the Horcrux, disguised as Bellatrix, Harry under the invisibilty cloak with Griphook, and Ron with a disfigured appearance.

We will be talking about chapter 26 – what stands out to you?

Canon Conclumdrums

What do you guys think about the imperious curse? Is the person being controlled limited to their own physical and mental abilities? Or to the casters abilities? Could you theoretically cast the imperious curse on a person that has no experience with something like chess for example, and tell them to win a match? Or to win a gymnastics competition, with no training whatsoever?

Catherine Finnigan – …In order to create a very good likeness of someone you need to know that person, like writing a biography, you have to do your research. You need to spend time with that person to understand their personality, as this is what is going to be the difference between a good likeness and a great portrait. Then, when you are in the process of creating the art work you need the person there, you cannot solely rely on photographs.

Jocelyn – I have a question in case you guys do another canon canundrum (sp?). My friend and I always have the conversation of, where the heck to people at Hogwarts bathe if they aren’t a prefect?

Angela – Considering how critical Ron & Hermione were to Harry’s life, I’m curious if
they too will be remembered as important historical figures at Hogwarts later in
life, or after death?

Wrapup -

From: Aleia Wright
You guys mentioned in one of your shows how you liked the random character, Nigel, who brings Ron his packages in one of the movies. WELL, in the Order of the Phoenix there is a second year that Fred and George are comforting because he had been in detention with Umbridge and his name was Nigel! So there! Not so random after all :)

From Lots of people: The elder wand may have helped fix hagrids wand, and dumbledore had it at the time, so why not?

21 Bits of Feedback for “PotterCast 236: Chunk By Chunk”

  1. Raina Williams Says:

There is a new picture fromDearhly Gallows Part 2. It looks in finished. What do you guys think? http://www.snitchseeker.com/harry-potter-news/new-harry-walking-away-from-dead-voldemort-deathly-hallows-part-ii-promo-80415/

  2. Raina Williams Says:

I meant say there is a new photo from Deathly Hallows Part 2. It looks unfinished.

  3. Rafael Says:

    Okay, here I go:

First, to answer the question surrounding Hagrid’s umbrella-wand. The answer is at the very end of Deathly Hallows. The Elder Wand. It fixed Harry’s wand and in the hands of Hogwart’s premiere transfiguration teacher could certainly affix it to the end of an umbrella.

Second, when did Molly know that Ron fancied Hermione and what did she do about it, if anything?

  4. Liz Says:

I have a canon Conclumdrum regarding PolyJuice Potion. In Goblet of Fire Barty Crouch Jr (BCJ) has Mad Eye Moody (MEM) locked in a trunk and MEM is very weak and his hair is all ragged when they discover him at the end of the book. My understanding of the way poly juice potion works is that you are going to look just like the person as they are on that day, and it seems like BCJ was taking cuts of MEM’s hair fairly often, maybe once a week or so. Why didn’t BCJ become weak and bedraggled like MEM? Couldn’t he then have resembled MEM before losing the eye and chunk of nose? At the very least, this is a plot hole. Great podcast, by the way!

  5. Opus Says:

I think that the deleted scene was great but I think the reason they deleted it was because it was just too out of character from how they have portrayed the Dursley Family in the past movies. They were always “cartoonishly over the top” and this is just too emotionally poignant.

It could have been just as serious but one twist would have made it fit with the previous movies. Petunia could have looked at Harry and said “You are the reason I lost my sister” and then walked out.

You guys are great! Keep it up!

  6. Jill Says:

Cannon Conclumdrums- Why didn’t Harry, Ron and Hermione just disapparate from inside the tent when the snatchers appeared? Hermione had time to cast the stinging jinx, why not just get the heck out of there instead? It had worked in a pinch twice before (Godric’s Hollow and the Lovegood’s).

  7. Dom Says:

I have a canon conclumdrum (though as a relatively new listener you may have done this one and I missed it):

Harry’s children are heading off to school in the Epilogue, the time when both Harry and it seems James were handed down the Invisibility Cloak. Which of his children would receive the cloak and would they keep it a secret, from other children (friends) and perhaps from the sibling?

    Toorah!

  8. Chris Says:

Aleia, the Nigel who brings Ron the package is the SAME Nigel who is in the DA that stuns Harry while the practice, and he is the same boy present who Lavender kisses Ron. The boy talking to Fred and George clearly says his name is Micheal, and looks not at all like Nigel.

  9. Aleia Says:

In the book, his name is Nigel.

  10. CROOK MY SHANKS Says:

I think you should mention how when Harry was reading the letter Lily wrote in Sirius’s bedroom, he referred to her familiar handwriting as looking through a veil. I think this is another nod to how the veil in the ministry is a passageway to death. Check out CrookMyShanks on myspace!!!! I only have one song, but its awesome! i love you guys, the podcast rocks!!!

  11. Chris Says:

Oh! Ok. I thought you were talking about the film scene. My mistake.

  12. Aleia Says:

Yeah :) they were discussing the movie character of Nigel and they mentioned how they just added a random hogwarts student named Nigel, but then I actually came across a Nigel in the book.

  13. Dana Says:

Hey guys! love the show! i have a question that you can discuss in the show. where do the people of hogwarts store all of their books that they are not taking to class? i know that they have a bag for their class books but what about the books they don’t take to class? do they have a locker or something? any ways. <3 the show! keep up the gr8 work! xxoxx

  14. Abbey Says:

Hey guys! In regards to the Imperius curse, on page 203 of the British edition it says “Neville performed a series of quite astonishing gymnastics he would certainly not have been capable of in his normal state”.

To me this says that the power of the spell’s outcome is not up to the physical/mental skill of either the victim or spell caster but up to how powerful the spell is.

I hope that makes sense! You guys are awesome.

    Abbey

  15. Lauren Says:

hey guys! something to discuss for the “harry potter today” segment can be harry potter comics. here’s a few examples:

  16. Natalie Says:

Heres a canon conclumdrum, how come Harry wasn’t able to see the Thestrals before Cedric’s death, even though he watched Lily die. Does it not count when you’re young?

  17. Paula Says:

Great show guys! Love you all!!
Going to see Dan in “How to Succeed in Business….”
April 16th! Woohoo! Will post how the show was!!

  18. Margeau Says:

    Hey pottercasters!!
I love the show, been listening since EPISODE 1… when I was in middle school. Now I’m a college student and distracting myself from human bio. to see what’s goin’ on this episode. I really like the cannon conundrum topic this week! I have always wondered why Neville was able to do gymnastics when Crouch Jr. put him under the imperious curse — I don’t think Crouch or Neville had any experience in gymnastics. I used to be a gymnast and your body has to be trained and flexible! This leads me to believe that it doesn’t matter what personal experience the caster or victim has. Probably, the caster would have to have seen a gymnast before and know what movements he/she desired, but i don’t think personal experience is needed.

  19. Tydin Says:

Natalie, I don’t remember where but I read somewhere that JK Rowling said that Harry does not see the Thestrals because he was in his crib when she died.

  20. Adriana Says:

I don’t think this has anything to do with the current show, but it’s worth talking about anyways. In the HPToday segment, you talk about new stuff that’s going on in the fandom. How about something old that is new to people who find it now? For example, fan fiction. For example, ‘the worst fan fic ever written’ ‘My Immortal’.
I’m doing a research paper (I interviewed Melissa for it) and I’m going to talk about it, and it’s so bad I feel like crying. Any thoughts on the story?

  21. Carolyn Says:

I am in high school ND love pOTTERCAST! yOU GUYS rock! dana, don’t they keep their books in their trunks at the ends of their beds? ;)
