Back to casting news, many people have wondered how Rik Mayall and Verne Troyer both got the part of “Peeves” the poltergeist. It all started with a September 1, 2000 article in Entertainment Weekly that talked about Verne Troyer’s latest role:

“He is now doing duty as a ghoul in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”

In a London Daily Record article 10 days later, it became the role of Peeves:

The tiny Tinseltown actor – who shot to fame as Mini-Me in hit comedy Austin Powers: The Spy Who S****** Me – will play Peeves The Poltergeist in Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone.

So technically, Verne Troyer could be playing any of the ghosts since 20 of them show up when Harry first enters Hogwarts after arriving with the rest of the first years. Two months later, in a December 8th 2000 article in the Brisith publication The Sun, an interview of Rik Mayall indicated his role:

Now on the mend, he is back in the big time after landing the role of Peeves the poltergeist in the new Harry Potter film.

So until someone has the guts to contact both Troyer and Mayall’s talent agents, we may never know until pictures come out or we see the movie..
