J.K. Rowling to Sign Copies of "Deathly Hallows" in London July 21

Earlier this week, J. K. Rowling updated her website diary with the announcement of a midnight book signing and reading from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on July 21. Our favorite author has announced a new contest for fans to attend this moonlight signing of copies of the last Harry Potter book the night of the release where she will also read from the novel.

Jo wrote of the event:

"On July 21st 2007, I shall be doing a mammoth signing through the night! 1700 Harry Potter fans will have the opportunity of having their copy of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" signed by me at the Natural History Museum in London. They will receive a free copy of the seventh Harry Potter book, courtesy of Bloomsbury, my UK publishers. 500 of these fans will also be randomly selected to hear me read from the book at midnight.

To receive tickets for this event, you will need to enter a ballot via the following websites: bloomsbury.com (for UK and Ireland residents) and scholastic.com (for the US). Other English-speaking publishers may also be allotted tickets; keep an eye on their websites.

It has been a long time since I've done a signing and had the chance to speak to readers individually, so I'm delighted that we are launching the book in this way. It will be wonderful for me to get the chance to speak to people who have already read a few chapters while in the queue!

Good luck if you're applying for tickets, and if you're successful, I'll see you shortly after midnight on July 21st!"

A short while later, US and UK publishers Scholastic and Bloomsbury, as well as Canadian publisher Raincoast and Allen & Unwin in Australia, released further details on who and how to enter the individual contests. In the UK, fans can enter the drawing online via the Bloomsbury site between May 23rd and June 11th. "1,700 fans will have the opportunity to meet J.K. Rowling and have their book signed at the Natural History Museum. The first 500 randomly selected winners will attend the midnight reading. The subsequent signing is expected to last until dawn. Every ticket holder will receive a free book from Bloomsbury Publishing." Winners of this contest will be notified by June 18th.

Stateside, residents under the age of 21 are eligible to enter via a print out form from the Scholastic site, that is to be mailed to Scholastic before June 15th. There "will be seven (7) Grand Prize Winners who will get a trip for two to London, England to attend a J.K. Rowling event at midnight on July 20, 2007. Trip includes round-trip coach airfare for two (2) people from the major commercial airport closest to winner's residence (winner and guest must travel together on same itinerary) and three (3) nights hotel accommodations (one (1) double occupancy room); ground transportation while in London, England, and $500.00 spending money. Each Grand Prize Winner and his/her guest will get to attend a J.K. Rowling event at the Natural History Museum in London -on July 20, 2007 at midnight." Winners of this contest will be announced on or about June 21st. They will also receive a US edition of the book.

Further information can be found here, and on the publishers websites as well.
