The Times: J.K. Rowling a Top Person of the Decade
December 13, 2009, 09:40 AM
The Times newspaper has an article now online listing what they call the "Top 50 People of the Decade." Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling is among those listed in the top ten (US President Barack Obama holds the number one spot). You can now see a high res scan here. Of our favorite author, the newspaper states:
6 J.K. ROWLING Author and philanthropist
Although the Boy Wizard first appeared in the late Nineties, it was in the
Noughties that J.K. Rowling became a Muggle of international renown, when
the first novel in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,
was released as a film in 2001. By the time the seventh and final book, Harry
Potter and the Deathly Hallows, appeared, Rowling had sold 400 million
books in 67 languages. Child readers became teenagers along with Harry, Ron
An unwitting populariser of witchcraft and boarding schools, Rowling agreed to
her publisher’s request to use initials of indeterminate sex so the name
“Joanne” would not put off boy fans, and she controlled her burgeoning £4
billion franchise with an iron hand. She oversaw the film scripts, insisted
on a British cast and tearfully defended herself in court when another
author threatened to publish a Potter “Lexicon”. Rowling has successfully
stayed out of the public eye by never courting personal publicity, and has
two children with her second husband. The Sunday Times Rich List
estimated Rowling’s personal fortune at £560 million, ranking her as the
12th richest woman in Britain. She gives £5 million a year to her charity,
which supports many causes including one-parent families, which she herself
was when she wrote the first Potter in an Edinburgh café with her baby at
her side. Kate Muir
She deserves it :)!
JKR is definitely one, if not the best, of the strongest women the 00-ties has spawned.
so great. :) i’m so happy. :D:D she totally deserves it. 100%. good for her. i can’t even describe how happy i’m about it. lol.
Congratulations J.K. Rowling!!!
Obama is first??? I don’t believe it! o :/
Anyway, congrats Jo. Eeyore, that’s a good point. I wish they’d written a bit more about the books and something about her first child.
She deserves it! She actually should have got number 1!!!!!!!!!
I was first!! I hate this comment thing!!
Super happy for Jo! But srsly? Simon? Obama? Simon is just a mean british judge and Obama’s not really “of the decade”. After reading those two names i couldnt go on. Really some people get appreciated for doing almost nothing. What JKR did is something beyond what they’ve done :P Jo deserves to b number one!
Yay, she beat out Osama bin Laden!
Our dear Jo deserves everything ^^
only 6! i don’t think anyone in the world has more popularity then her books
Of course! Congrats, JK!
Jo Rowling has a wonderful gift for telling stories that transcend generations and cultures. Look at news coverage of book releases, book signings, and HP Fan events. There are those about Harry’s age when he entered Hogwarts, their parents and grandparents. Proving that Children of All Ages enjoy a well told story. The books have been sold in sixty-seven different languages proving that these stories are enjoyed by people from many cultures.
The books alone don’t tell the whole story. Jo started a charitable foundation to which she contributes regularly in time as well as money. This passion to help has been passed on to the young actors in the HP movie series. Many of them have set up charitable foundations which they support with time and money.
All from the stories of one marvelous storyteller.
Congratulations Jo Rowling for well-deserved recognition of your many interests and support for those who need a hand from time to time. For sharing that passion with the actors who brought your stories to life on the movie screen. For making the world better than you found it,Thank You.
Of course she is! Congrats, JK!!!
