We’ve seen a news article about Claire Etaugh of Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois who has reportedly “studied” twenty books – possibly “picture books” – to make a determination that female characters are shown as often as male characters in books, but “are often weak, submissive and dependent”. In her presentation at the British Psychological Society’s European Congress of Psychology, she said that she has read all of the Harry Potter books and applied her analysis of the “picture books” to the Harry Potter series. She was quoted as saying, “it seems that the only way that a woman can be competent is if she has supernatural powers.” Which women in the Harry Potter books aren’t witches, this editor asks. Petunia Dursely, perhaps?
