Crafts + Geekiness = Love

While I have been a Harry Potter fan for years, there was a time when I really didn’t know where I fit into the Harry Potter fan community and didn’t know that I had anything of value to contribute to The Leaky Cauldron. I am just a fan and don’t necessarily feel I have anything more exciting to say than anyone else.

Then one day I came across a Harry Potter crafting community on Yahoo, and shortly after that Leaky Crafts sprang into existence. I don’t know why it hadn’t occurred to me before that crafts could be a valid medium in which to pour fannish energy. Especially since, if you’re a knitter, seamstress, etc., one tends to choose their Hogwarts House colors more often than others when planning a project. It turns out I’d unknowingly been a crafty witch for a long time.

Crafting in fandom is a lot like fanfiction or fanart in that if you’re creating things inspired by or based on books, movies, or television, there are endless avenues to explore. The obvious crafts to attempt in the Harry Potter universe are the ever-popular House Scarves or character costumes. From there you can simply take any creatable item and plug in House Colors or themed charted designs.

By the way, my name is Rosemary and I am a major geek. Nice to meet you. I mean, I’m a knitter AND a HP fan simultaneously, so I suppose that would indicate a healthy dose of nerdiness right there. I also suppose it wouldn’t be a surprise to know that not only does the wizarding world inspire craftiness in me, but also many other things like various Sci-Fi worlds, fantasy concepts, the works of Tolkien, and much, much literature past and current. Surely you see the weight of the Crafters’ burden.

Nowadays I’m a Crafty Witch (with capital letters) and am very glad to have a place where I can work within the community. Crafts are wildly popular for many age groups and life paths, and the witches in the Leaky Crafts section are excited to be sharing and spreading the creative wealth.

Love and magic,
