More American Who Talk

There’s a pretty big rumor going around – and let me emphasize, RUMOR, not confirmed by the BBC, so take it for what it’s worth – that the Beeb is going to capitalize on how weak the American dollar is right now against the British pound and film two or three of the 2009 specials in the States.

Some reports even suggest the last two Harry Potter movies (parts one and two of DH) may do the same thing, to help stretch their movie-making budget. That rumor doesn’t seem to have nearly as much weight behind it as the Who rumor, but it’s out there.

I could totally buy it, though. In the western U.S., you can’t go to any of the tourist attractions of the natural world without hearing a symphony of other languages. The European tourists are doing the smart thing and taking advantage of our weak economy. I’d be really surprised if the same thing isn’t happening on the east coast as well. And I say, hey, bring it on. The more they spend over here, the quicker our recovery time! If the tourists are smart enough to figure out where the best vacation for their money is right now, why shouldn’t the studios and networks follow suit?

Of course, I have a totally selfish reason for wanting to see it happen. It’s been my dream now for a while to make it to the British Isles so I can tour Scotland first (my ancestors were Scottish), see some Harry Potter sites second, and third – go to Wales and try to see Doctor Who filming in person. With the weak dollar, there’s no way that dream is in my budget at the moment, so if two of the three dreams can come to me? So much the better!

Last rumor for today – speculation that David Tennant and Johnny Depp are on the short list to play the Riddler in the next Batman film. (You should click that link – someone’s photo-shopped DT into the Riddler costume!) We don’t even know if the Riddler’s the next villain to be put on screen, so it’s not even as credible a rumor as the one about filming in the States. It’s more like *if* the Riddler is going to be next, these two guys are the top picks to play it. Gah! Who would you pick? They’d both be brilliant!
