J.K. Rowling and Emma Watson recognized for their Philanthropy

J.K. Rowling and Emma Watson have earned a place on The Independent‘s eighth annual “Happy List.” The list honors extraordinary people who extraordinary things for causes they care about. Emma Watson was named for her work with the United Nations, as the UN Women’s Ambassador. Her devotion to gender equality and work with her HeForShe campaign has brought her world recognition outside her role of Hermione Granger in our beloved Harry Potter series. J.K. Rowling is as full of writing talent as she is generosity. The Independent recognized her for her use of social media (Twitter) to address social issues, as well as her children’s charity, Lumos, and other donations she has made to her home country of Scotland. The Independent wrote:

The wizard of words is a staunch defender of equal rights, using Twitter to challenge everyone from misogynists to the homophobic Westboro Baptist Church. As well as donating huge sums to combat social deprivation in Scotland she founded charity Lumos, which works to end the institutionalisation of children worldwide.

Emma Watson

The 25-year-old Harry Potter actress became a star of the humanitarian stage after launching HeForShe, a UN campaign to include all men in the fight for gender equality. Her first of many impassioned speeches extended a “formal invitation” to men to participate in the conversation. She has gone on to campaign for women’s rights. Hermione who?
