The End II: Hit or Miss

For me, the last book of a series are always a hit or miss. The last book in a series is so significant. It completes the story and ties everything up in a neat bundle. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows took me a solid nine hours to read, from start to finish. I read through the night to finish it, and it was definitely worth it. Deathly Hallows was a hit.

Unfortunately, Breaking Dawn was a miss. If you go one post down, the one from yesterday right after I finished the book, I said something along the lines of how I was confused over how I felt and I wasn’t quite sure yet if I liked it or not. This doesn’t usually happen. Usually when I read a book I know how I feel about it. Deathly Hallows left me feeling sated and as if the series came to a definite, content closure. I was happy with how it ended and I was happy with the information we got about how they lived on the rest of their lives. I know a lot of people would rather have gotten the details of how everyone existed, like where they lived and who they married, what they do for a living, etc. I liked what the epilogue told us. For me, the epilogue gave me enough to know that Harry, his friends, and family are living a content life without the danger that they all grew up in. He’s finally got the life that he deserves, and that’s really all I wanted to know.

Breaking Dawn was different. I say it’s a miss because I was severely disappointed with the book. There was good and there was bad, but overall I was unsatisfied with the book. So yeah, it was a miss for me. But I have talked to some people who really enjoyed it. It is all a matter of opinion and personal taste.

For me, what makes a great end to a series is that it gives me a sense of completeness. A series has to come full circle and you can’t be wanting more after the book is over. Deathly Hallows gave closure and completed Harry’s journey. We don’t need to hear more of him. Breaking Dawn left some questions unanswered and there was too much that I couldn’t agree with.

Now this blog is not for me to debate why one series is better than the other, but my personal opinion is that Harry Potter is always going to win over Twilight. In my opinion. But I’m going to try and not let that interfere with the future topics I’ve got all aligned. I have some great topics all ready and I just need to get them together. I might have one or two more posts about just Breaking Dawn and Deathly Hallows; there’s a lot that can be said on the ending of a series and how it affects the readers and the fans and the authors themselves. But for me, Breaking Dawn sends a few wrong ideas to the readers and just didn’t fit in the series with the other three books. That’s a big disappointment. But it doesn’t bring down my like for the other three books. I shall just regard this one as a separate from a whole.
