Dan Radcliffe Interview

The fabulous Winky of the French site PotterWorldOnline.com has sent us her translation of an interview Daniel Radcliffe did with the (French) magazine Total Star. As always, our thanks to Winky (who, contrary to what she thinks, has excellent translation skills!).

How is the atmosphere on the set of “Harry Potter and the Prisonner of Azkaban?

It’s really good. I’m very glad to work again with Emma (Watson), Rupert (Grint), Tom (Felton) and the others. We became truly friends since we met on the first film set. We have a really good time together, and you can feel it on the set. All are getting on very well, too, with the new director, Alfonso Cuaron. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to work with him and Chris Columbus. They’re different, but really good [in their own way]. Chris exactly know where he is going; he never doubts of himself, and he’s certainly the most dynamic director I’ve ever met. He has also a huge sense of humour and he’s really inspired me. As for Alfonso, he’s passionate and put the intensity of his emotions in the movie. The way he directs inspires me a lot and help me to progress sensibly.

Can you handle the studies and the set filming?

Yes, all is made to help me in this way. With the help wonderful organization from the movie team, and the cooperation of my teachers, and my friends are here, so I can handle anything. I keep contact with my old school with the Internet. The studies are really important for me and I will won’t stop studying for any reason in the world. And I’m pretty good with my homework because I have a personal teacher, I’m very lucky because I’m studying better this way.

Will you be Harry again in “The Goblet of Fire”?

I know some people won’t bet on it because i’ve grown up and changed since the first Harry Potter, but Harry has grown, too. So I really don’t see where the problem is, and I will be in the fourth film. But after that, I don’t know what will happen for “The Order of the Phoenix” – only the future can tell. I don’t know either if Emma and Rupert plan to be in the fifth film. And, in fact, I don’t if it’s a good thing if I do the whole saga because I’m so close to Harry, I feel so like him, that i’ll maybe need therapy to handle this part! [laughing]

So you have still so much in common with Harry?

Yes, I’m sure of that. I sometimes feel like the books are talking about me and not a character. Harry and I are growing in a very similar way, and our friends are still very important to the both of us. As time is passing, I discover how much we look like each others. Our common curiosity frequently brings us troubles.

Have you other film projects to remove your “Harry’s face”?

The filming of every Harry Potter takes me approximately 11 months a year, so I really doubt for the moment that i can be in any other project. But iIwant, of course, to do other projects. In fact, I really wanna try to be a movie director – it interests me a lot.

What do you think of fame?

I’m still really surprised when I meet fans – they’re so supportive. People are so [attentive], sweet and generous with me that I really feel priviliged. This is amazing – I really wonder if I deserve all of that. [This] gave me the opportunity to travel and to discover fantastic places. But what I like the most is to see the finished movie. After we’ve worked so hard on it, to have given it so much energy, to have shared such things because of it and to see people doing the same, this is so great to discover the result of what we’ve done. And I love signing autographs. The only problem is that my name is too long to write so I’ve decided to simply signed “Dan R”.

What do you like doing in your free time?

I’m a cinema and music fan. The Sex Pistols and the Clash my favorite music bands – that gives you an idea of what I love listening to. I’m learning to play the bass and I bring it everywhere with me, and my portable DVD player and lot of movies. Except that, I feel like a normal teen. I go to school when I’m not filming, I go out with my friends, we have pizza-parties, I go to cinema… I’m not different from the others, and the fact people can recognize me in the street is not a problem for me. I’m still living like everyone else.
