Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Book and Movie Differences

We are constantly updating these pages, so if you see something that we’re missing please feel free to send us an email at [email protected]

Rearranging or Shortening the Plot

Quidditch World Cup: the game was never shown, bets were never taken, and the Bagman/goblins subplot was cut out.

Missing Murders: The back story of the Riddles murder and Frank Bryce’s suspected involvement was left out of the movie.

Chapters 2 – 8: There are so many missing things here it’s easier just to mention that these chapters have been cut almost completely. This includes Dudley’s diet, the ten tongue taffy incident, Winky, and the sillyness of wizards dressing as muggles.

S.P.E.W.: Spew and Hermione’s political consciousness were left out of the movies entirely.

Gleem of Triumph: The book describes Dumbledore’s gleem of triumph, while in the movie this was cut.

Draco the Ferret: In the book, Draco is turned into a ferret by Mad-Eye Moody before the Unforgivable Curses lesson, but in the movie it is after Harry and Ron quarrel.

Blast-Ended Skrewts?: The movie never mentions blast-ended skrewts.

Missing or Misplaced Characters

Dursleys: The Dursley characters and the ton-tongue toffee scene were left out of the film.

Ludo Bagman: Bagman is left out entirely from the film.

Dobby/Winky: Dobby and Winky are left out of the film entirely.

Beauxbatons and Durmstrang: each school is depicted as co-educational (both genders) in the books, but in the movies they are not.

Swapped or Altered Quotes

Dumbledore’s Calm: In the book Dumbledore calmly asks Harry if he put his name in the goblet, yet in the movie we see Dumbledore grabbing and yelling at Harry.

Gilyweed Dilemma: Without Dobby in the movie, Neville had to tell Harry about Gillyweed, while Dobby had that chore in the book.

Secrets that make the Hair Curl: In the book, Rita Skeeter tells Hermione she knows things about Ludo Bagman that would make her hair curl, but in the movie Moody says this same line to Draco Malfoy about his father.

Changes in Scenery

Feeling Pink Hermione?: The book has Hermione in a blue dress at The Yule Ball, while in the movie she is wearing a pink dress.

Myrtle’s Mischief: In the book Harry was very careful and covered up Moaning Myrtle’s glasses while he was bathing in the prefects bathroom. In the movie she was very forward in her attempts to look down into the water.

Small Plot Changes

The Dragon Task: In the book, the dragons were not allowed to be hurt or leave their enclosure, while in the movie there is an epic chase scene around the Hogwarts castle with Harry and his dragon.
