What Only Six Inches Can Do!

Okay okay, quit your snickering that’s not what I mean but I figured it would get your attention.

The
six inches I’m referring to is the six inches of hair that was bundled
than cut from mine today and will be sent to an organization called
Locks of Love.” This seems to be a small amount of hair when you consider that it was
down to just below my waist when I went in to the beauty college in the
next town over this afternoon and now is just be low my shoulder
blades. But the ladies there assured me that it can make one wig for a
pediatric cancer patient.

I had been familiar with the organization before as
several other friends of mine gave hair donations but I always thought it had to be longer.

Now, what exactly does this have to do with crocheting and crafting you ask? I’ll tell you.

The
hairdresser working on my hair today suggested it when I talked about
trimming a couple of inches off to even my ends. Considering the area
I live in, I was rather surprised to find someone who knew of the
group. She lost a friend to pediatric cancer and its a cause close to
her heart. As we chatted and she worked, I realized that there should
be more awareness of this organization in our community so I spoke to
one of the managers/teachers.

Together, we’ve come up with
having a week long promotion for Locks of Love in the summer and I will
have crocheted an afghan by then. Anyone who donates hair can be
entered in a drawing for the afghan during that week.

It was a simple idea and
honestly, I was surprised at how receptive they were to it.

Crafters,
is there a cause very special to you? Or perhaps to someone close to
you? Maybe we cannot make something for every person suffering from a
specific illness or problem. But today I learned just how effective
one donated crafted piece can be.

The Jedi may have their force with them.

Wizards may have their power of spells and charms with them.

But we have the power of our crafts……. use them wisely and well and watch what they can do!
