J.K. Rowling appeared in the BBC documentary Peter Kay: 20 Years of Funny to pay tribute to comedian and friend Peter Kay. The documentary aired on Christmas Eve.

The synopsis is as follows:

Documentary looking at the career to date of Peter Kay. Intercut with clips from Peter’s television shows and stand-up tours, the programme charts Peter’s life in comedy from Bolton schoolboy to award-winning, record-breaking comic, actor, writer and director.

An in-depth interview with Peter gives rare insight into his comedy roots and early ambitions, and shares the stories behind the creation and production of TV classics like Phoenix Nights, Max and Paddy’s Road to Nowhere, Britain’s Got the Pop Factor, and Car Share.

Contributors include JK Rowling, Paddy McGuinness, Danny Baker, Matt Lucas, Reece Shearsmith, Richard Curtis, Susan Boyle, Cat Deeley, Jason Manford, Dave Spikey, Jo Enright, Ted Robbins, Lucy Speed, Pete Waterman and Rick Astley.

Rowling spoke about Kay’s talent as a comedian and as a writer, branding him ‘a born entertainer’, and of her experiences with him as a friend.

She commented on the character of Brian Potter, from the series That Peter Kay Thing:

‘You had this real character, with a real disability, and that disability did not define the character in the slightest, and I was very interested in the way that he did that.’

On Car Share, a sketch depicting the character ‘John’ (Peter Kay) in the car on the way to work :

‘Obviously it’s not Peter, but there are aspects of the character that very much made me think of driving around with Peter in the car, talking, and just talking utter rubbish at each other and turning up the radio, and turning down the radio and shouting at the radio – I’ve done all those things with Peter so yeah, I loved it. I absolutely loved it.

On his talent as a British Comedian of over two decades:

‘He’s a genius at what he does, and it’s amazing to watch’

The documentary can be watched on BBC iPlayer in the U.K., but can also be seen on Youtube (below) for the rest of our readers!
