Read on for our review of the latest developments in the world of stage!
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has been a certifiable success with fans and critics alike. The original cast accumulated an unprecedented number of Olivier awards for the London production, and the second West End run has been just as warmly received with newcomers Samuel Blenkin (Scorpius Malfoy) and Rakie Ayola (Hermione Granger-Weasley) nominated for Broadway World UK awards.
Most recently, Cursed Child picked up the award for Best West End Show at the West End Wilma Awards 2017, adding to its impressive list of accolades! Blenkin and Theo Ancient (Albus Potter) were on hand to collect the award on behalf of the play.

The trend will undoubtedly continue as seven original cast transfer to Broadway to reprise their roles when Cursed Child opens in New York City next spring. As Leaky previously reported, they will make the cut-off for the Tony Awards by mere days, so we predict numerous nominations will be forthcoming!
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child clearly “exceeds expectations.” (Excellent work, wizards!)
Anthony Boyle Returns to Belfast for Christmas in the City
Anthony Boyle, award-winning member of that ground-breaking Cursed Child cast and originator of the Scorpius Malfoy role, will return to West Belfast this December for the Christmas in the City Gala Concert. The Ulster Hall charity event finds Boyle not only presiding as master of ceremonies but also as a featured performer, taking on a number of festive readings sure to delight the audience!
According to Belfast Live, Boyle will be joined by many renowned professionals, including flautist Eimear McGeown, soprano Aoife Miskelly, baritone Karl McGuckin, and West End singer Laura Tebbutt. Schola Cantorum, the Ulster Youth Orchestra, and McMaster Stage School will also take the stage–all to benefit this year’s selected charities: The Cancer Fund for Children, the Atlantic Youth Trust, and Pieta House.
Tickets for the Dec. 10 event are now available for purchase here!
Jack Thorne’s King Kong Sets Broadway Opening
King Kong, the innovative new musical from Jack Thorne, now has an opening date! Fans of the giant gorilla (and Thorne’s work) can look forward to seeing the production on Broadway from Nov. 8, 2018 with preview performances starting Oct. 5. The score is composed by La La Land’s Marius de Vries, a four-time Grammy nominee, with songs by Eddie Perfect of Beetlejuice fame.
Theater Mania gave the following synopsis:
It sounds almost magical, to say the least, and right up Thorne’s alley. If anyone can capture an epic storyline and character with the right sense of nuance and awe, it’s him! What do you think, Potter fans? Will this be the new must-see musical of Broadway?
Jim Broadbent to Star in A Very Very Very Dark Matter
The Stage announced that Jim Broadbent, our Horace Slughorn, is set to star in a new play from Martin McDonagh. The play, A Very Very Very Dark Matter, opens at London’s Bridge Theatre in Oct. 2018 and is described as “dangerous, twisted and funny,” much like McDonagh’s The Pillowman. It will tell the story behind Hans Christian Anderson’s children’s tales.
The play, to be directed by Matthew Dunster, will run from Oct. 10 to Dec. 29, 2018, and more production details will be released early next year.
Theater Community Addresses Sexual Harassment in the Industry
The theater community has not been insulated from the mounting sexual harassment allegations levied against some of the biggest names in Hollywood. In fact, one of the most notable actors held up to public scrutiny is Kevin Spacey, a former Broadway star and artistic director of London’s Old Vic Theatre.
Variety reported that prominent figures in the industry from both sides of the pond have now made moves more closely monitor harassment policies in order to prevent the recurrence of such behavior.
In London, Sonia Friedman, the renowned producer of Cursed Child, has thrown her support behind an effort headed by Royal Court artistic director Vicky Featherstone to standardize a code of conduct that will curb abuse.
Americans are taking similar precautions. The stage actors union, Stage Equity Association, contacted about 1,500 employers to ensure they have harassment policies in place and that those policies will be reviewed at the start of every production.
One manager told Variety these steps–and an overall awareness of the issue–are extremely important in an industry where the nature of performance often requires intimacies between actors and actresses. Therefore, the commitment to keeping those relationships professional is essential.
Although the motivating impetus for finally taking a strong stand against what has been, sadly, a common occurrence in the performing arts industries is a resounding negative, we’re hopeful a positive outcome will come from these initiatives, resulting in a more secure and supportive environment for the creative process!
