The Oscars are fast approaching, and it’s about time we had another Potter-related film in the running at the awards!

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences says the visual effects of Fantastic Beasts are most definitely enough to get the film in the top ten eligible for an nomination at the Oscars.

Entertainment Weekly reports:

“This year’s shortlist includes Doctor Strange, Fantastic Beasts, Captain America: Civil War, Arrival, The BFG, Deepwater Horizon, The Jungle Book, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Passengers. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is also on the list.”

Our recent coverage of Cinesite’s contributions to Fantastic Beasts makes it clear why the film is eligible for the award – the level of painstaking detail required to create the beasties (Frank and the Occamy were particularly beautiful), and shots such as the dinner in Tina and Queenie’s apartment takes true mastery of cinematic magic:

“Viewers were treated to the sight of pastry dough, cinnamon-sugary apples, and what appears to be raisins wrapping into an elaborate lattice topped with rosebuds, all as the table sets itself with the flick of their wands. The delectable apple strudel looks so warm, enticing, and perfectly crisped, that the audience can practically taste it.”

The huge team behind Fantastic Beasts has this process perfected, especially after working on the Harry Potter films previously!

The Academy Award nominations will be announced on January 24th 2017, and the Oscars ceremony itself will air on February 26th. You can read more about the nomination process here.
