Forbes Magazine has published a Harry Potter Merchandise preview today… some excerpts:

The Harry Potter book series has already turned out to be gold mine for publisher Scholastic . Potter books accounted for roughly 10%, or $200 million of Scholastic’s total sales, in its most recent fiscal year ended in May. Well, it’s nothing like what’s coming in November, when the bespectacled Potter materializes on movie screens all over the country. Along with the film will be a wizard’s ransom of toys, games and other assorted products aimed at cashing in on what appears to be the media craze of the year.

Now comes the movie Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone from AOL Time Warner unit Warner Bros., which has an estimated budget of $100 million, though the studio has kept the real figure a secret. Rather than hit theaters as a summer blockbuster as originally planned, the film will open on Nov. 16.

Toymakers have high hopes that Harry Potter toys will sell especially well, propelled by the film. Mattel has the master license for all Potter toys and promotional products. Planned toys include the plush Roarin’ Snorin’ Norbert the Dragon, and Harry’s Levitating Challenge, a skill game in which players “levitate” pretend stones through obstacles using compressed air.

Number-two toymaker Hasbro will have Potter-themed card games and electronic toys, while game software company Electronic Arts has the rights to computer and videogames. Flying Colors, a unit of toymaker Jakks Pacific, will produce a line of craft and activity kits. And if that weren’t enough, your kids may even want to wear Potter’s image on their clothing. Most accessories will be made by privately held apparel companies but carried by retailers like Sears , J.C. Penney and Wal-Mart. Fossil will have Potter watches, and Department 56 will offer a line of six lockable secret boxes. Collectible maker Enesco will release a line of collectible mugs.

The Leaky Cauldron is not associated with J.K. Rowling, Warner Bros., or any of the individuals or companies associated with producing and publishing Harry Potter books and films.
