On June 1st, I made mention of a review of Nancy Stouffer’s books from the Barnes & Noble Web site that while apparently written by an “F.J. Lauver”, I claimed was written by Stouffer herself. Reader Nicholas Hutchinson found an article at the Unofficial Harry Potter Fan Club that mentions Fred Lauver as the first person to give Ms. Stouffer a writing gig:
She began writing professionally in 1976, after deciding that she was tired of performing. Fred Lauver, now an editor at a state historical magazine, gave Stouffer her first writing job as an entertainment reviewer for a now-defunct local magazine called TV Host. Her copy was generally left untouched during the editing process, he recalls.
“I thought she was very creative, very insightful,” Lauver says. “She was a person who was not afraid to state an opinion about writing, and wasn’t timid about it.”
So while the review may have not been deceitfully penned by Stouffer herself, there is still a level of favoritism that produced the sickeningly sweet review.
