An article in the BBC today quotes a spokesperson from JKR's literary agency as saying that JK Rowling is flattered that people want to write their own stories based on her characters. The spokesperson is quoted as saying, "Her concern would be to make sure that it remains a non-commercial activity to ensure fans are not exploited and it is not being published in the strict sense of traditional print publishing." The article also mentions fanfic sites including The Sugar Quill.
