Box Office Mojo is reporting that the official total for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban‘s opening weekend in the U.S. is $93.7 million. This makes it the highest-grossing first weekend for an HP movie, and the third-highest opening weekend of all time in the U.S. (behind Shrek 2 and Spider-man), and bodes well for the rest of its box office life. According to the site, the film took in $38.2 million on Friday, $31.5 million on Saturday (-17.7 percent) and $23.9 million on Sunday (-24 percent). Thanks Laura!
In the UK, says the BBC, the film also beat its own records, taking in 23.8 million pounds. (The U.S. receipts equal about 50 million pounds.)
