Why did we “not need to know” that Dumbledore is gay? How is it irrelevant? Obviously, the “default” for most people is that he was straight. How is it not relevant to know this piece of background? How is it not relevant to know that he loved, especially since he talked so much about love? And of course she didn’t mention it before—it would have been harder to get her books to people. Bad enough people were banning them for witchcraft; you know that even more people would ban them for having a gay character.

Plus, there were mothers and fathers in the story, and love stories with Cho and Ginny and Harry and Hermione and Ron and Remus and Tonks- so obviously they’re straight. Don’t need to say anything when you’ve got the baseline that everyone believes everyone else is already. So in this children’s story, there is already the intimation of romantic love and having children, which requires… And so revealing that Dumbledore is gay simply completes the picture and background. It doesn’t add inappropriate sexuality—sexuality is already there with the couples/ families!

re: dumbledore’s love
the one element of truth about this beautiful life that was missing from harry potter…jk you are truly magical…harry’s wonderous world is complete :)

Total tabloid. Extra gay and liberal readership now, with more press from the right-wingers. Can Albus not respect another man for his equal brilliance without being homosexual? And the bottom line is, how does that change who and what Albus Dumbledore was and is to everyone? His sexuality has no bearing on his character. If this is Jo trying to prove that gay = good person, it’s a pathetic statement: a person is good or bad by virtue of who they are, not due to their sexual preference. Ridiculous and intentionally “pressworthy.”

I never thought she made Dumbledore gay IN THE BOOKS. She made him gay in a comment AFTER ALL SEVEN books had been published. Colorful clothing on a wizard means he’s gay? I figured it was another cultural difference between the wizarding world and the Muggle world - kinda like African traditional dress, which is extremely colorful. In fact, men’s dress is colorful in MANY cultures, even in some historical periods in the western world. Was that supposed to be our “clue” in the first 6 books? Come on! I don’t see how this is a “victory” for gay pride - now, having some gay characters IN THE BOOKS would have been terrific. A nice gay couple as members of the Order of the Phoenix would have been a TERRIFIC role model. But a character who was so closeted that up until JKR’s statement, he was seen as straight and therefore AD/GG fics were slash, and then the ONE single gay relationship (which looked like adolescent hero-worship and adulation to me when I read the book, though I figured it would give nice fodder for slash-shippers) that one single gay relationship is with a Dark Wizard who was the nastiest character in the books apart from Voldemort? Nope, JKR did not do the gay community any favors, and it’s a sign of how desperately we need gay role models in mainstream lit that people are grasping onto this very thin, very weak, and very questionable statement. I completely agree with gaymanspeaks when he says, “WHAT? I could care less if someone is gay (as I, myself, am gay), but I do have a problem with Dumbledore being gay, because she didn’t write the relationship between Grindelwald and Dumbledore that way at all. Either she decided that after the fact or she can’t write romance worth a darn. Pathetic Rowling, just pathetic.” Posted by gaymanspeaks on October 19, 2007 @ 10:12 PM
Heck, those letters were so unromantic, they weren’t even the model for Victorian letters between straight men who were friends! I agree, pathetic!

lol.. Dumbledore gay. Why am I not as shocked as I should be?!
I never thought she made Dumbledore gay IN THE BOOKS. She made him gay in a comment AFTER ALL SEVEN books had been published.
To both of those comments…....In I think it was book 2 at Christmas, Dumbledore did exchange his pointed wizards hat for a flowery bonnet. Could that have been a hint?
For the rest of you who are still ragging on claiming that his being gay just totally changed him for you; get a fricken grip already! You don’t have to condone everything about someone to appreciate even revere other things about them! You could be flabbergasted at someone who dresses up as an animal for sex yet still admire their many accomplishments.

The first time I ever heard that Dumbledore was gay was listening to Pottrecast, like, 2 weeks after JK mentioned it. There seems to be a plethora of internet reaction and hype, but most of the HP fans I know (who obviosly don’t keep up to date with internet news) didn’t bat an eyelid or don’t even know.
I know a lot of anti-HP crowds will make a bid deal out of this but I think that if too much is made of it, Dumbledore’s sexuality will begin to overshadow the credibility of the series.
This is great for gay rights, but let’s take it in our stride and move on. The only way to overcome the predjudice against homosexuality is to not treat it now as some massive ‘Oh my God!’ Hollywood scandal or revelation but accept it as normal HP canon. The more poeple who make a big deal over it, the more religious fundamentalists will have a chance to discriminate against gay rights and the HP books. Maybe I’m being a bit heavy for a post, but what I’m trying to say is that the reaction that even the most loyal and supportive fans hasve demonstated how far we, as a socity, still have to develope before we achieve true eqaulity and acceptance of other people’s lifestyles. The day a major character of a much loved series can be revealed as homosexual without 88 pages of comments and LOL!s, jokes and references about paedilophilic situations will mark the milestone of a truly open-minded and developed human society, free of the fears and phobias of archaic religion.

Ok….I can’t believe this!!! I always looked up to Dumbledore. But now he’s gay??? Come on J.K. that just spoils everything because it would have been so cool for Dumbledore to fall in love, have kids, and all that jazz. And since she made him gay why couldn’t she make him fall in love with someone like Sirius or Lupin. Someone good you know? Oh well that doesn’t change Dumbledore’s personality same old same old Dumbledore.

Best regards to all the people at the site. I’m glad to find such an informative site as yours. Generally I’m not keen on looking through my credit reports now and then.
