Surely Dumbledore’s orientation can’t be a surprise? After all, in book one, on the Hogwart’s Express Harry gets a chocolate frog card of Dumbledore, stating that Nicholas Flamel is his partner, what was the reason for that?

Jenny.

What a great move to make with Dumbledore.
Although, everyone seemed really shocked by it.
I guess I never really thought about his love life. hah.
JK never fails to impress me.

Wow, I cannot say this does not shock me and, perhaps, change my look for Dumbledore forever. But this is only what Rowling think right? To me, Dumbledore is still Dumbledore

"Why do we have to know Dumbledores sexual orientation? I say Boo JK. Why did you need to reveal that."

Well, by the fact that a vast 99 percent of the characters are undoubtedly straight, due to the relationships with the opposite gender, and the difficulty with getting any character into a same sex relationship, she chose Dumbledore. Why was this easy?

Both because his love is dead, so there’s no need two write out two storylines for his sexuality AND his love.

Also, she wrote the damn book, so she can reveal whatever she likes.

dumblewhat??

I wish I’d never heard this news about Dumbledore, I guess I’ll just imagine him still being straight as an arrow when I read the books again. Oh, and Sue – you are way too happy to share this news with little children. Are you hoping that they’ll become gay or something? Just a weird comment by you….

Okay, I’m a lesbian and I typically encourage prominent gay characters in both literature and film. I just feel that Dumbledore being revealed as gay in the 7th book was sort of hideously random and out of place.

I grew up believing that Minerva and Albus were great friends and perhaps, at one time in their past, lovers. I strove my whole youth to prove that this was true, hoping for hints at it. One can obviously tell that they are close, but I suppose it’s just the HP version of the Janeway/Chakotay dynamic, where everyone else SWEARS they should be together because they seem so perfect for each other, but they never do. They’re really just perfect friends. Who wants to mess with perfection for the sake of the ratings, right?

But then, Chakotay didn’t turn out to be gay, he just went with the blonde Borg babe….as if that weren’t completely below-the-belt ridiculous to all the J/C fans !

Not that I’m bitter or resentful in any way !

cough

Anyway, my point is simply that I wish JK had not made Dumbledore gay because I LOVED the idea of him being with Minerva. That really worked for me, as well as many, many others ! And then, all of a sudden, at the end, BIG SHOCKING OUTING.

I’m truly disappointed.

But if it rallies the cause, well then I suppose I offer my sincerest congratulations to Ms. Rowling for her success in having it as well received as it has been (with the exception, of course, of the bigoted homophobes across the globe).

Ok, perhaps it wasn’t such a sudden outing, considering the note about Nicholas Flamel and all…

BUT STILL !

For once, this lesbian was rooting for the straight couple and now her hopes have been dashed !
