I have a sneaking suspicion Ian McKellan might have reconsidered accepting the role if we had known this from the beginning…

I think Jo did a brilliant job of keeping Dumbledore’s sexuality a secret until the 7th book because it shows how Harry really didn’t know that much about Dumbledore and it serves as a really important wall that Harry regrets not trying to knock down. I’m so sad that the books are finished!!

The transcript for this isnt showing up which is bothering me. Also, I would like to point out at any of those ppl that think she said dd is gay just for publicity that she had this whole story in her head before the pen hit paper, so I would appreciate it if you kept that to yourselves…

I couldn’t really accept that statement – Dumbledore is not gay, because really – what is a gay? A homosexual? I never heard Jo saying that Dumbledore actually had sex with another man…So I don’t consider him gay. Right, he never married, but what does this mean? All unmarried people are homos? That’s just absurd, then Mad-eye is gay and Mcgonagall is gay and Sirius is gay…etc. That’s just absurd, I think JK said that just to be original and nothing more, just a little shocker for her loyal fans. I will never accept that Albus Dumbledore is gay and for me – he is not. Like all super intelligent and brilliant people,Dumbledore is highly misunderstood and even lonely, but I don’t think he was into man. No, sir, no!

This was awesome! I just read this after I saw on my wizarding wireless that one of my friends had commented on it. I only just discovered Leaky this year so I wasn’t around when this first came out but this is awesome! This is the part about Jo that I love and that in my mind sets her far apart from other authors. The fact that she makes sure to know all these little and unimportant details (such as that Neville marries Hannah, Dumbledore is gay, a family tree of many characters, etc..) is amazing and just shows how much time she took to make sure the world of Harry Potter is perfect!

According to my faith, gayness is wrong, but I think it’s okay if JK Rowling wanted to make one of her characters so. Characters have to be an impression of the real world, and there are tons of people who believe they’re gay. You have to show love to people who are “gay” too- the hate on here is saddening. People are committing suicide because of prejudice; why would anyone want to be a part of that? For me, it doesn’t change anything- Dumbledore being gay- especially since it wasn’t in the books. I still view Dumbledore as a great man, the greatest wizard EVER. Even if I think he was wrong with one little thing.

according to my conviction, gayness is not wrong, but i sincerely applause obiwancrazy for proper use of human brains! Christians and other antigays-by-faith, learn a lesson from them! And even moreso all the upset little fans, whose ideas aren’t even shaped by their own sincere convictions but just by thoughtless everyday bigotry! You’re all a big bunch of Dursleys!
And to the person above who thought Dumbledore had just chosen books over sexuality, that’s the whole point! and it mirrors the sad situation of many realworld homosexuals, who choose to refrain from all sexual life due to early traumatizing experiences, massive social unacceptance, or both. And to Black_Sabbath1983, being gay is not about who you have sex with, it’s about what you feel (for other people). I can’t believe ppl are so incredibly confused about romantic and sexual feelings. It’s not even hard to explain this stuff to 6-year olds in one sentence, as someone showed some pages back. It’s not rocket science, even though it’s a great mystery of life.
To the point, this whole article increased my appreciation for J.K.Rowling and her books a lot!!! Previously, i was actually like, "ok, seven super-long books that very obviously are “a prolonged plea for tolerance and an end to bigotry”, and not even one token gay person??" Kudos for having “the token gay person” be such a strong, charismatic, and central character, and also for making it a central part of his backstory and not just an exotic or comic curiosity. Now i’m just missing a gay person with a moderately HAPPY lovelife :) It’s so trivially common, in all sorts of fiction, to have the “token minority person(s)” suffer unjustly – it’s always “the black guy dies first” and so on…
Also liked a lot of the other stuff she brought up in her answers to the questions. As said, my general appreciation really increased by several notches!

“applause” should of course be “applaud”. Oops.
