Some amazing news this morning for you as author J.K. Rowling has announced on her website she has written a new book, however there is only one to be made available to the public, and it will be sold for charity. On her website, Jo states this new book is based on a tale that is mentioned in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." The book that is to be auctioned is one of seven handwritten by the Harry Potter author, the other six will be given to people she wanted to honor privately, with the final copy going on auction at Sotheby's in London on December 13th 2007. The book, leather-bound and embellished with silver and different semi-precious stones, "will be on display to the public for a short period before the sale, and catalogues will be sold, all profits going to the Children's Voice." Readers will remember this is the charity that Jo founded several years ago; more information on this group, here. The Children's Voice charity (formerly Children’s High Level Group (CHLG)) aims to stamp out cruelty, neglect and abuse of young people, especially in Eastern Europe. JKR made a moving visit to the area several years ago, and has remained dedicated to helping these children.

Sotheby's has a short description about the book itself (Note: A special 48 page catalogue previewing this will soon be available for sale to the public and includes a message from Jo about the creation of the book). "Autograph manuscript of “The Tales of Beedle the Bard ” translated from the original runes by J.K. Rowling. Individually handwritten and extensively illustrated by the author, c.160 pages written in an Italian hand-made notebook, bound in brown morocco embellished on upper cover by Edinburgh silversmiths Hamilton and Inches, with five individually hand-chased hallmarked sterling silver ornaments and mounted moonstones."UPDATE: Sotheby's has now officially released to the press three new photos here, here, and here.

Some additional information about this remarkable event can be found via the following : (Please note, if you have not yet read the final Harry Potter novel, there are spoilers.)

    I saw a “Blurb” about this, on Yahoo!News, this morning. I decided to check it out, on TLC, first! I am very glad I did. But I am very dismayed at the fan reaction….1) JKR is not OUT to “make money” on this.20)For those who don’t know, ‘Fantastic Beasts’ and ‘Quiditch Through The Ages’ was already written and released. (and is still available, I think) 100% of the profits, going to charity.Finally, I agree with valma. It wouldn’t be a personal gift, if the whole world got to read the book at the same time. I also think that, she’s right. I would not be suprised if the stories are included in the ‘Encyclopedia’. Yes: “what a time to be a fan”.....to see someone, with that kind of money, doing so much for charity…despite all the negativity. Good For You JK!

    Seriously! I thought the lawsuit and this were just one elaborate joke that Leaky and Jo did together, I mean they did meet when Jo came to the US right?—Is it too much to expect that this was a joke rather than the fact that The-Books-That-Must-Not-Be-Named is making me crawl into a ball and feel a little depressed…I hope we can hear Jo’s side of the story – this just seems completely wierd to me…I’m still waiting for Melissa to jump out and say ‘gotcha!’

    Hey, if you guys hate J.K. Rowling that much, why do you keep coming to this site and commenting everything negatively? It just ruins the mood for the most of us. I think it’s really nice of her to give them as gifts and sell one for charity. It makes me smile to think that there are still unique books made in 2007. Those will be treasures after a 100 years time. Well they already are :)

    One or two additional comments: Yes, in a VERY SMALL way, it is “cruel”. Jo DID say that she wasn’t going to write anymore “Potter-related items” for a long time. Who’s to say that she didn’t have this “in the works” for some time? It isn’t an easy process to have all the expensive work done, on the cover. Nor to “hand write and illustrate” a 106pg book. As a fan, I am dismayed, that “we won’t get to see it, unless we have X-amount of dollars..Ladies and gentlemen: The Commemorative Catalogue is available, now, from Sotheby’s. It is $16. US. For me, it’s worth the wait and money for such a collector’s book. Yah. HUNDREDS of people will have it. I’m sure that HUNDREDS of fans will go and order it. But I will have MY copy. It may be all I’ll ever see, but I’ll have it. I am still of the opinion that Ms Rowling is a wonderful, charitable person. To come up with this idea must have taken some thought, time and money. ALL of which she has, in abundance, right now! JMHO

    @carrie: Go to the ‘Sotheby’s’ link, provided at the end of the article, on TLC. When you get there, there is a “buy the catalogue button”...follow the link, and you’ll have the list. It is available in several diffrent forms. One is JUST JKR’s book, and the other is the whole Sotheby’s Catalogue for the Auction. The Catalogue, for Jo’s book, is $16. US. The Whole Auction Catalogue is $48. US. On the left, it will tell you when it is available for pre-order (right now, looks like) and when it will be shipped. Both for the pre-order and the regular. I imagine that the “shipped no later than 30 days before the auction” is to insure that everyone, who wants to bid (on anything being offered) will receive it in a timely manner. GO FOR IT!

    Wow, this is awesome. A bit sad that we’ll never get to read it though. Do you think that maybe it will be released for the public as a book (not the original copies, of course)in some years?

    @Moon,

    we “Snapes” are too shabby and too poor for her further books. James Potter wold have paid for one of the books. Cause he was wealthy and a Gryffindor. No chance for usual human beings.

    1. The six people deserve such a wonderful gift from Jo. How amazing a gift this is!

    2. The auctioned copy is a treasure, the sale of which will help the children supported by the charity.

    3. Everyone who is complaining about Jo over the last couple of days: Quit your whineing!! You are the most “fair weather” fans I have ever seen! Dumbledore is gay. Jo is a businesswoman. It’s not the end of the world!

    Of course, We Muggle readers are actually here to just raise the price of her noble acts. She knows what she’s doing, doesn’t she?

    I bet it will be published in the encyclopedia. Seeing as how she hasn’t even started officially writing it even though it’s a lot of stuff that she cut, there is going to be some time before it comes out.. So I bet it will be in there.

    I mean JKR is loyal to her fans. I don’t feel like she would do something like this just for the rich elite. I have faith that we will one day get to read this!!

    As an avid collector of HP, more than anything else Rowling has done, this HUGELY annoys me! Why on god’s green earth would a BILLIONAIRE produce only seven books, plan to auction JUST ONE of them off for “a children’s charity” and give the rest away as gifts when we – the fans – are the very people who made her rich??

    Does she think we WOULDN’T want to buy it? Why doesn’t she MASS PRODUCE this “special book” and give ALL the proceeds to charity? THAT would make a bigger difference than auctioning ONE book. Even if this one book brings in $10 million, that’s a PITTANCE of what she is worth and how much money she alone could give to charity. She could even mass produce the book herself! And if she gave the proceeds to charity, that would make her fans happy AND benefit the charity!

    I’m very disappointed in her decision.

    Well said, Glenn. I think this is a wonderful, beautiful gesture from Jo. Those six people are fans, too, remember, as well as having been the ones to support Jo through this incredible process. Gosh, they are lucky! I’m happy for them.

    @gkmouse,

    I´m convinced MRs. Rowling does not give a damn about the readerships meanings. We have paid already, that is enough for her. She does not need us anymore.
