An AP report now online is estimating that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix took in $77.4 million in three-day earnings, putting it at the top of the box office for the week. This additional intake has brought up the full five-day domestic total for the film to over $140 million. As expected, Order of the Phoenix sits a top the US box office, but internationally, the film is also enjoying staggering box office takes, with an estimated $190 million gross since Wednesday in the 44 countries the film was released in. After only five days, the fifth film has grossed over $330 million worldwide.
Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros, commented in the article about the decision to have the film open on a Wednesday, rather than the traditional Friday release, as the first four Potter films did. He said:
“We’re in the middle of summer, and we just said why not, because kids are out of school… It certainly turned out to be the right decision.”
“Order of the Phoenix” did more business in five days than each of the first three “Harry Potter” movies did in their first full week, and it nearly matched the $146 million first week total of the fourth film, “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” Fellman said.
Question: Do you think the Deathly Hallows release will help or hurt next weekends box office totals for OOTP? Personally I think it will have really good Friday night as people warm up for the midnight release, but Saturday and Sunday will see a major drop as fans lock themselves away to read the book. What do you folks think?
Darthvoldemort, I agree. i really dont think that the movie will suffer tremendously. Not everyone is into the books and prefers the movies, (of course, their mental mind you!) Nah, I think the movie should do fine. i want it to do great so David Yates gets fired up for HBP.
I think people who have not read the books will go to see the film this coming weekend, having heard good things about it. People who have read the books will obviously be in a cupboard with lots of caffeine reading book 7 where no-one can reach them with any spoilers.
The film and the book together are one big publicity explosion which can only be good news for both.
Is anyone getting really nervous about this Friday? I’m all jittery!
I’m sorry but I’m quite disappointed w/ the movie. I know not to expect much from it but then again it still did not match to my not-so-high expectation. But I love LUNA and SNAPE!
I agree with those who say that Michael Gambon has improved his portrayal of Dumbledore. There is still room for improvement, but he has got it better by 60%, at least.
Carry on, Sir Michael. You are on the right track.
The film was better than feared and not as good as hoped. But that is cinema. Give me the books any time.
I am very disapointed in the movie. I felt like I was watching the trailer for the movie. It was so chopped up and show Umbridge too much in the movie her role was bigger than DD. I would have really liked to see Weasley is our King! or the interview with Rita to have been included.
Saw the movie in London last Thursday. It was packed and the audience and I had a great time. I thought it was an intelligent adaptation (of a long-winded novel) and enjoyed Imelda Staunton and Daniel Radcliffe. Thought they were great!
Even my husband, who tolerates Potter for the sake of our child and me, thought it was good!
It’s Potter madness here in the UK, by the way. Everywhere I turn, there’s Harry!
Got off work Friday to go see it, and saw it again Sat morning. Loved it! Most of my friends are non-HP readers, and they enjoyed this movie too (I make them go to the movies so I can still talk HP with them). A nimble plot (plot hole of the thestrels notwithstanding) and Ms. Staunton’s my new favorite actress.
Loved to hear the crowd cheer when Dumbledore escaped by phoenix, and when the wall of edicts came crashing down!
Dumbledore’s phoenix scene was really great! One of my favourite scenes. ‘You’ve got to admit he’s got style’! :D
I’m not going to bother to give a review of the film- I’ve read and written too much on it already. Except to say that I am so proud of Dan and looking forward to seeing what he can bring to HBP post-his-Equus experience.
