Word has come via her official website confirming the news that actress Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) will take on a new role in a television movie called “Ballet Shoes.” The film, which will be broadcast on BBC One in the UK around Christmas this year, will feature Emma in the role of “Pauline, the eldest of 3 orphaned sisters who lead a sheltered life until they begin at the Children’s Academy of Dancing and Stage Training.” This movie will co-star fellow Potter actors Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon) and Robert Hardy (Fudge), and is based upon the novel by Noel Streatfeild. Production on the film is set to begin this month.

well,in some way,we already knew this.gret for emma,but i think she needs “big ones”,not television roles…

Avatar Image says:

they’re not going ot have much time to shoot this film if half blood prince starts in september. i also hear that emma is going to be dying her hair platinum blonde, which is a good thing for HP, becuase that will mean they’ll dye her hair brown for the next movie, and hopefully it won’t be dirty blonde, like it was in order of the phoenix.

Avatar Image says:

GO EMMA!

Avatar Image says:

well, whatever it is, it will raise her popularity, right? and that’s good for hp too!

Avatar Image says:

Sarahak- These types of films don’t take that long to shoot. I think they’ll be done by mid-September which will probably be when HP filming starts.

Max- It, honestly, can go either way. I’m sure she’ll do fine, but like Dan and Rupert, it’s still a risk.

But you know I’m sure she will do a great job!

Avatar Image says:

Oh, cool! I’ve read that book! It’s not the best book ever, but it’s fairly good.

or they may simply let her keep her blonde hair. I wouldn’t be surprised. her hair was pretty much blonde in ootp along w/james potter anyways.

Avatar Image says:

yay! i love those books :)

but wait, i’m in the u.s…..boo…..will have to wait that much longer for dvd i guess :)

Avatar Image says:

oh,i am sure too that she will do just fine.Trio is talented!

Avatar Image says:

She did GREAT in Harry Potter 5 And I’m sure She will have Plenty of time for HP because She isn’t in the first couple of chapters in the Half-blood prince so they can shoot those first if she isn’t done!

Go Emma! Really cool!

Avatar Image says:

oh no! im in the us! i love emma and im sure shell do great but i wish i could see it!

Avatar Image says:

I Live in the U.S. too! If its good enough they might put on some American channels!!!!!! I wish i could see it!!!!!!

Avatar Image says:

That’s great! It’s about time Emma branched out a bit.

Avatar Image says:

Cool, too bad I’m in the US. It’s a good book.

PS, did anyone hear the news that Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix) is pregnant?

Avatar Image says:

20? Wow. Cool!

Avatar Image says:

That’s great. And she’s is FINALLY doing something else, thank god!

On another subject, I know the cast list hasn’t come out for Half Blood Prince, but what if Liam Neeson took the role of Scrimgeour? Just a thought.

Avatar Image says:

I think I would rather see Patrick Stewart play Scrimgeour. But I have been wanting to see Patrick play a part since GoF….sigh.

Avatar Image says:

It seems that the Potter actors can’t keep away from orphan roles. lol

Avatar Image says:

Thats great but isent HBP set to begin filming this month how wil she do both but im sure she can she very talented

Avatar Image says:

I agree Victoria! And I’d also like to see Clive Owen as Greyback! Yes? :) Though really he could play any role, I’m not picky…

Avatar Image says:

Emma will be great in it. She is also voicing the part of Princess Pea in the Tale of Despereaux, with some heavy hitters, including Dustin Hoffman, Richard Griffeths and Sigourney Weaver. She’ll be great doing a cartoon princess, with that classy girl’s-school accent, ha.

I think her agent is managing her just right. Make some small but high quality moves, and take it from there. Go Emma!

Avatar Image says:

I wouldn’t mind Liam Neeson as Scrimgeour, but Bill Nighy was my first thought when he came along in DH. Wat is dis ruckus?! ;)

I remember my older sisters reading Ballet Shoes… Good choice I think :)

Avatar Image says:

awesome! i look forward to seeing emma in a new role :]

Avatar Image says:

Cool I loved those books as a kid. Too bad I live in the U.S. and won’t get to see it anytime soon. :(

Avatar Image says:

My question is, if HBP filming is going to begin next month how the heck does she find time to balance out filming for both movies??

Avatar Image says:

Emma gets a role outside of Hp and people can’t help but make snde remarks about her hair. It’s getting old now, really. It’s such a childish complaint anyways.

Avatar Image says:

“My question is, if HBP filming is going to begin next month how the heck does she find time to balance out filming for both movies??”

To address this and other similar comments: Smaller movies don’t generally take that long to shoot – they could have principal photography done in as little as 4-6 weeks. We also don’t know how big Emma’s part is; it’s possible they may not need her there that whole time. Second, as far as HBP filming goes, I seem to recall that with Goblet and maybe with Azkaban the first things they filmed were second unit stuff, and they didn’t bring in the principal cast until a month or more into the filming process. So even if they start filming in mid-September, they may not need Emma until mid-October or later, which will give her plenty of time to get this other movie finished. I’m sure she looked at her personal filming schedules for both HBP and this one and made sure they wouldn’t conflict before she agreed to take this new role.

Avatar Image says:

To whomever was implying she should be doing films instead of T.V. —this drama is set to air at Christmas on BBC1 – it will reach a much wider audience than a small film would. The BBC on average gets around 10million – 12million viewers at primetime in the holidays. As this drama has been described as the “centre-piece” for their line-up, and given the STUNNING casting, it’s bound to be a huge hit.

It’ll probably take between 4-6 weeks to shoot, that’s the average for these sorts of things. HBP does start in September – but we have no idea when in that month. And Emma may not even be required at the beginning of the shoot. I’m sure, given how concerned she is about her education, her agent & parents are used to careful scheduling by now. People needn’t worry that she won’t have time to do both. Of course she will, otherwise she would not have taken this on!

Avatar Image says:

The US is deprived of everything good :( It’s so unfaiiiiiiir! Well anyway, I’ll wait! It’ll be interesting seeing Emma take on a new role!

Avatar Image says:

Hopefully she won’t over act this part, as she has in the Potter films.

Avatar Image says:

That’s Emma for you’re imput. I never thought about it reaching that many people. That would be better than a small film, plus a bet BBC will put it on DVD. It’ll make a lot of money for them. Emma’s such a great actress and really seems perfect for this part. I’m sure she’ll do great like she has in the HP films. Maybe shell even get more acting awards.

Avatar Image says:

Man! Too bad it is a TV movie. I would really like to see it. Emma is such a good actress.

Avatar Image says:

Good job for getting thaat part. I agree with Melissa on the part about being a tv movie because I want to see it too. Emma, I cant wait to see you in the next hp movie though.

Avatar Image says:

I wonder if Mr. Griffiths is the one pushing the kid’s names into other roles or if it’s all their agents, but either the Potter actor’s paths seem to cross a lot or the acting community in England is somewhat small.

The again, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Watson and Griffiths togeteher on the screen, so it’s a bit of an unfair comment to make. Either way, good luck Emma! Hope the role is remarkably different, because those are the ones that break typecasting (I’m assuming the film involves dancing, which would be fun to see Emma do).

Avatar Image says:

The British acting community is actually rather large, as acting has always been a popular career aspiration here – it’s just getting the parts that is difficult. There are stage schools in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so in Britian is a whole there is a big generation of new actors also coming up. There are a lot of unemployed actors in the UK though!

It is actually strange when Dan or Emma make the joke that they think we have had ‘almost everyone’ in the Potter films now, as I calculate that less than 5% of the Actor’s Union have had parts on Potter movies so far!

Avatar Image says:

CONGRATULATIONS Emma!!!!!

It’ll be nice to see Emma in a non-Hermione role. Hope the movie is shown in the U.S. as well.

As for casting the last two HP films… I would love to see Bill Nighy or Liam Neeson as Scrimgeour. And I would LOVE to see Clive Owens in any role!!!!!

Avatar Image says:

I’m a little bit disappointed with Emma’s choice of roles outside HP. I expected somehting big, something that would make a splash like Dan’s Equus but these projects are small. She’s not even the lead in that cartoon movie. And I hear she’s just one of the leads in this TV movie. But I guess she couldn’t get the roles she liked.Didn’t Emma audition for some projects last year and was turned down? Still, a good enough step outside of the box of being Hermione. Good luck to Emma!

Avatar Image says:

None of the kids is going to step out of Harry Potter into a major film lead. Dan is coming the closest with My Son Jack. They’ve got to prove themselves outside Potter, and then move on up. And I think they’ll do it. They’re all good, and they have huge recognition factor, not to mention huge international fanbases. Just give them time. Emma wants to go to university anyway (god bless her). She can’t do everything!

Avatar Image says:

So, anyoe who has read the book:

What’s her role, and how is the character she portrays? Is it a female heroine?

Is she shy and timid, and a dynamic character that will grow, or a Headstrong Hermoine-like part?

Avatar Image says:

That’s great for Emma! She deserves all the breaks for she is such a good actor and no I don’t think she overacts in any way! All the best Emma! You’ve given us so much enjoyment in the films!

Avatar Image says:

daaaaaaaaang…richard grffiths is in EVERYTHING

Avatar Image says:

What’s with the HP kids and playing orphans?

Avatar Image says:

Oh I loved this book when I was little! I haven’t read it since I was about 11 though, so I can’t remember what the character Pauline is like! I guess I’ll have to give a copy to my daughter now to read. It sounds like a good choice for Emma, it’s a lovely classic book, and avoids all the teen fluff she wanted so much to avoid. Congratulations Emma!

Avatar Image says:

The one thing I’ve noticed about Emma is that it seems like school is more important to her than acting. Sure she loves it but I dont think her having just television shows will upset her. Of the trio, she seems to more go the route that the other adult actors have gone which is stage. Either way, Im very happy for her and also saddened since I live in the states. I doubt I will be able to see the show though it does seem very interesting

Avatar Image says:

It will be very interesting to see Emma in another role. She’s such a good actress, I cant wait. Im gonna go out and buy, Ballet Shoes. It looks good, if it’s one of Jo Rowlings favorites, it’s gotta be good!

Avatar Image says:

“So, anyoe who has read the book: What’s her role, and how is the character she portrays? Is it a female heroine? Is she shy and timid, and a dynamic character that will grow, or a Headstrong Hermoine-like part?”

Oh, the “Shoes” books are wonderful, and Pauline is my favorite character in the best of the books. Pauline is the oldest of three adopted sisters—their last name is fossil because the man who adopts them brings them home along with fossils on his trips around the world. Pauline is a beautiful blonde, and when complicated circumstances lead to the three girls going to a stage school, they discover that she is a very talented actress.

She eventually plays Alice in Alice in Wonderland, and then is in some serious plays and goes on to become a movie star (the books were written in the 1930s, so it was the Golden Age of Hollywood). She will probably have to dance a little bit but it’s the youngest sister, Posy, who is a talented dancer.

this is one of those times that i wish i lived in the U.K.

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

Avatar Image says:

hopefully they didn´t cast the “dancing” eyebrows

Avatar Image says:

CONGRATS, EMMA (and don’t listen to the haters). Victoria Wood (who is also in this film and works quite often alongside Julie Walters) is a VERY discerning actress and would never EVER work with someone she didn’t think was talented enough.

I saw a documentary on Victoria Wood and a lot of the other actors who have worked alongside her have found her nice but VERY demanding – a perfectionist. If she didn’t think Emma was good enough for this role there is NO WAY Emma would have been cast in it, believe me.

Avatar Image says:

Hope we have a glimpse of it in Oz

Avatar Image says:

What’s wrong with doing television work? Daniel Radcliffe is filming a TV movie right now. Good for Emma! I’m happy to see the HP kids doing other projects, because they’re all quite talented and it’s fun to watch them grow as actors. But it’s still kind of sad because as they find more and more work outside of HP, it just reminds us that the series is almost over! tear

Avatar Image says:

I think its great that Emma’s doing this. Rupert’s ‘Driving Lessons’ was just georgous and I am realy looking forward to seeing Dan in ‘My Boy Jack’. ‘Ballet Shoes’ is a wonderful book and Emma will be wonderful as Pauline I’m sure.

Avatar Image says:

the 2 hermiones are v. different but this is the writers choice not emmas. and if the director asked her to, she would change her preformance.

its going to be interesting to see her in another role, great news

Avatar Image says:

This is wonderful news for Emma. A project that’s different from being Hermione, something small enough that won’t conflict too much with HP commitments and school. emma can dance too so I’m sure she’s excited about the part.

Avatar Image says:

i think it’s kind of funny that emma and dan are both playing orphans in movies…

Avatar Image says:

Go Emma! I’m sure she will be fine in this movie. I sure hope she has brown hair again for hbp, though.

What’s this about Helena being pregnant?!

Avatar Image says:

Good for Emma! I know that Emma has been offerd a lot of big roles in big movies outside of HP(I know Disney made her several offers) but her management turned them down because they were typical teen movies.

Re casting, I would have liked Patrick Stewart to have played Albus Dumbledore, to me he should have got the role from the start.

Regarding TV movies, TV movies are regarded in a different way in the UK. There are so many Made for TV movies in the US and a lot of them are not great, so they are looked on differently. But I think in the UK the BBC ones are highly regarded and most of the best actors around the world jump at the chance of doing a BBC movie.

Avatar Image says:

hey, anyone disappointed about Emma’s choice of apparently ‘small’ tv role, don’t knock it! She’s playing alongside two of the most established veteran actors in the UK (Robert Hardy and Richard Griffiths) so you can guarantee that this will be a quality production. I have never known those two be in anything substandard.

And for those who think movies are all, you’re thinking with US bias. In the UK it’s theatre and TV that are the main areas to make yourself known (by which I mean to establish your reputation), and unless you’re lucky enough for your low budget film to actually get noticed in the US AND you also happen to look ‘right’ for the US market, that’s as far as it will ever get for most.

Also, don’t forget that the Trio are still essentially teenagers, so ‘adult’ subject matter will not be that forthcoming until they are over twenty. Dan was lucky to get offered two fairly ‘adult’ 17 year old subjects.

Avatar Image says:

Abouut the casting in the HP movies, did anyone else want Ian McKellen to play Dumbledore? He was great as Gandalf! And I wanted the actor that played Aragorn to play Sirius because he really looks the part!

Avatar Image says:

Wow! Now we can finally see Emma dance! :) That’s cool, good for her.

Avatar Image says:

The HP trio are all doing “small” projects because they are still doing the HP movies. Except for Dan’s “Equus”, all the projects they’ve accepted are small enough that it didn’t conflict with HP filming. HP movies take almost a year to film and that will not give the stars enough time to do other major movie projects in between the HP movies. This TV film of Emma’s may just take a month of filming which would leave her free for the shooting of HBP.

Avatar Image says:

Excellent! I am sure this movie will be aired in other parts of the world because the “Shoes” series is quite popular and Emma is very famues thanks to HP.

Movie trivia: this is the series Meg Ryan talks about when she is at FOX bookstores in “You’ve Got Mail”

Avatar Image says:

Check out this cast list just released today. I’m proud Emma is part of this project. What a list of names.

Avatar Image says:

thanks for that Solo! This is hilarious, Emilia Fox who will be playing the niece who helps raise the girls also played Dan’s mum in David Copperfield lol! What a small world, hey?

Avatar Image says:

Those of you worried about whether it will make it to the States, may be heartened by the fact that there was a UK TV version of “The Ballet Shoes” back in the 1970’s that made it over here.

Avatar Image says:

I don’t know about anyone else, but I am so happy to finally see Emma is a movie other than Harry Potter. After Rupert did ‘Thunderpants’ and then ‘Driving Lessons’ and Dan has done multiple other roles in ‘December Boys’ and ‘EQUUS’ I am so happy that Emma finally got out there and has decided to do something other than Harry Potter. I have been watching and waiting for this. Congradulations Emma!
