If you are worried about HBP not being action filled and funny enough I don’t think you should worry. There is a David Yates interview on the Ain’t It Cool website. He is comparing his take on it to American Graffiti and says it is going to be “sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll”. So, he doesn’t see it as dark.

I just hope he doesn’t lose the dark part in all the Ron/Lavendar/Hermione and Harry/Ginny and Quidditch stuff.

So, if you’re worried about a dark movie don’t, he is going for the wild side.

I agree with those who think having DH go on sale less than 2 weeks after OOTP’s premiere did hurt the box office sales.

I saw OOTP on an IMAX screen. It was fun to watch for the most part. I liked it much better than GOF, but then I hated GOF. I thought the opening scene with Dudley and the Dementors was brilliant, but the fight in the Ministry was a huge disappointment. It didn’t matter that it was in 3-D. That scene in the book was SO EXCITING and SO SCARY to read, but so much of the excitement was left out of the film. I thought it just fell flat on screen.

I always tell myself not to have high expectations for the films, but the feeling is hard to resist. Once again I left the theater wondering why couldn’t they just film the scene the way JKR wrote it???

I am proud to say that I finally was able to respect the movies for what they are and ignore my purist mindset. OOTP was above par, especially compared to GOF. Even though the movies lack much information and scenes, which I atleast believe to be imperitive anecdotes, they still do a good job of getting the point across. I was dissapointed, however, that OOTP lacked the scene of the the Twin’s swamp. But all in all, OOTP was an improvement. I heard that Jo has signed on to help out quite a bit with the DH movie, anyone else hear related info?

Anthony, I hadn’t heard that about JKR, but I hope it’s true!

I hope it is not a rumor. If she helps out a bit extra with any movie I pray that it is for DH. The movie is going to be very intense, and with her insight it would be awesome.

Its doing well but still has a long ways to go before it passes CoS and GoF worldwide. It is behind CoS by 104 million dollars and nearly 120 million is needed to catch GoF. However it has weeks to go in theaters unless they pull it out early like they did GoF.

Lady Hawke, it’s not the movie being dark or not funny that worries me, it’s just that when it comes to magic shenanigans HBP falls short from the rest. Lots of kids or teens who haven’t read the books are just following the movies and instead of the usual razzle and dazzle they’ll get flashbacks and information on how to beat Voldemort. The ending is the only truly action filled part of the movie (and the most dramatic). The rest is trying to find out what Draco is doing, Felix Felicis, Quidditch (which is likely to get cut since it’s mostly a Ron side story and the movies are heavily focused on Harry), and trying to figure out who the Halfblood Prince is. Compared to Thestrals and Giants and the battle royale from OotP or to the Triwizard tournament, HBP seems a tad tame. This movie will have to be carried through by it’s drama and suspense and doesn’t sound like an FX heavy romp. I’m all for it, I’m old enough to enjoy it, but I do worry about the numbers it’ll make.

I DO want to see Draco crying though. :) And I actually enjoyed Yates filming style, so I’m going to put some trust in him. And once I was done reading DH, I was so HP charged that felt like watching OotP again, so I think the movie benefited from the book. Maybe not that weekend but the days afterward.

I LOVED OOTP. It is certainly my favorite HP movie, based on my second favorite HP book (now that DH is out, that is). I had just finished re-reading the book a few days before I saw the film, and although I was slightly disappointed with some scenes being cut or changed, I was overall very happy with the movie. If you don’t separate the film from the book, then of course you will dislike the film. I’ve finally accepted that the films are different from the books, so the changes didn’t bother me very much, not even the Snape’s Worst Memory scene.

Overall, all of the HP films have been very successful, and it’s a big accomplishment for the 5th film in the series to be doing so well. Overall, in my opinion, while the HP films are really good, they’re not cinematic masterpieces like the original Star Wars trilogy (but then, hardly anything after Star Wars has been able to be it). But the film was great, and I hope that it beats Cos, PoA, and GoF worldwide. I have a feeling that DH might become the most succesful HP film, but it’s too early to tell.

Of all the films that I have seen, this is my second favourite, behind PoA. Every time that I have gone to seen, I feel a little more satisfied and can’t wait until the movie is released, which I believe should be either in October or November. I hope to see it this coming Friday for the fifth time (yes, this is the first HP movie that I have seen multiple times in theatres and yes I did go to the midnight screening of the movie and hope to do it for the next two movies, even if I do have to work the next day).

Carebie! Way to fit an Eddie Izzard quote into your commentary there! Izzard +Potter fans are the worlds greatest people. Totally agree with your comments. Left my 2nd OOTP viewing with a friend who’s never read the books (I’m working on her!) and had to answer so many questions for her. I still don’t entirely get how people enjoy the films without having read the books. They are great fun in their own right I know. Bit its like thinking all there is the iceberg is the tip!

With all the millions that the movies are making why haven’t they made the movies into two disks to contain more of the books information? You of the Leaky Cauldron and other sites/groups and fans know that the fans WILL go see it and buy it no matter how long it is or how much it will cost.

Sorry Beckey, there are not enough dedicated fans alone to make the movies commercially viable without casual audiences too – the movie makers have to rely on those who are casual viewers (about half the movie going viewers of these films apparently). That is why they are made for cinema audience needs and not dedicated HP fan needs. Under half of cinema audiences have read the books, according to surveys. That’s why they change a lot of detail in the movies – so many movie goers just want a good self contained film rather than another specialist dose of a personal hobby! I regret this but we must live with it. I like the books best but I do like all the movies and have no major criticisms of them. I read all the books 15 or more times but still accept that the movies will always be shortened or changed. Too many fans are too picky IMO! :-)
