So does anyone know what “opening night ” means? because i have 2 tickets to the show on september 13th, which is significantly before sept. 25th. i hope this doesn’t mean dan rad won’t be the star until it officially opens on the 25th. any help is greatly appreciated!

Lauren,

You are seeing a Preview Performance. That means the actors are still considered to be “in rehearsal” and the show isn’t “set” yet. In theory they could still change something, entrances, exits, costumes, line delivery, etc. until opening. The actors and crew will still be receiving nightly “notes” on their performances from the director. But you will be seeing the show essentially as it will be seen on opening night.

Well I don’t really know how to answer your question but I would guess it is kind of like the opening of a store. you would think opening day would be the first day the store opened. A good few years ago when WalMart was built in my town the store had been open two weeks before they had a grand opening. But if what you ask is true and Dan is not there I would be getting my money back. Hope you enjoy the show.

Forgive me if my first attempt at this shows up. I posted and my Avatar appeared with my post but now it is gone.

Lauren

You are seeing a Preview Performance. The actors are still technically in rehearsal. The director will still be giving the cast and crew notes and small or even significant changes could be made in line delivery, costumes, lighting, etc. Opening Night is when the show is “set”. The director hands the show over to be run by the stage manager. Essentially, you will be seeing the same show as those who see it on opening night, especially since this is not a brand new show.

I got my tickets months ago and am so excited to see this play! I tried to get tickets for the opening night but they were not available so I got the next night instead. I can’t wait, it will be my first time ever seeing a play and my first time in NY. Counting down the days until I leave!

Avatar Image says:

I’m going to see it for my birthday on October 24th and I can’t wait!

You guys are so lucky! I cant even get to the movies but twice a year because of my kids. I think Id really like to see Dan, live. He drew me into Harrys charachter in OotP, he was really convincing and emotional! Such an awsome performance and I bet Eqqus would be even better!

Avatar Image says:

Thanks Lady Hawke for explaining what opening night means. As long as i see Dan, i dont care that they’re technically still in rehearsals!

I logged on to the Broadhurst Theatre site and they offer a calendar from which to choose the date and time of the show you wish to see. I was shocked to find out that September and October are almost SOLD OUT…and even November was a little sketchy. Geez…I knew the tickets would go fast, but wow.

Avatar Image says:

The telecharge website (which TLC links to) seems to have tickets available on the dates that the Broadhurst does not.

Please remember guys that this is not a show for youngins. If you don’t know what this play is about, you could get a copy of the Movie, Ian McKellen was the lead actor in it. I’m sorry but I don’t remember the year.

This play is disturbing and deals with issues of sexuality and psychosis. Please keep this in mind when buying tickets for anyone under 16.

After that caveat, please enjoy, this is a very good play when performed well and all the actors seem equitable to the task.

Peter Firth was the actor who originally portrayed Alan[as well as in the film with Richard Burton] at some points during the run it also stared with Anthony Hopkins as the doctor and at one point Lenoard Nimoy protrayed thedoctor. I believe it was Tom Holt [from Amadeus, also written by Shaffer] also portrayed Alan…...I don’t remember when Ian McKellum was is the play ,I know he wasn’t in the film.

Avatar Image says:

OH! and I would SO love to see this production. The very best of wiahes to Dan and Richard for thier run in this prodution…..the resrt of the cast looks excellent as well.

Avatar Image says:

That is …...best wishes…to Dan and Richard.

Good luck to those who can afford to go! I wish I could. Slight off topic question—does anyone know if Dan filmed “The Journey” film before going to NY for the play? I ask because he had several months off between the end of filming the HBP and his NY stage appearance and the IMDB has listed the movie as “in production” for a couple of months now. I haven’t seen any articles on this or where it might have been filming. Anyone know? Thanks. Enjoy the play.

Avatar Image says:

Mary…No Dan hasn´t been filming “Journey” yet..He said in an interview a while a go that it wouldn´t be until AFTER he´s finished with the DH movies..

Avatar Image says:

The last showing is supposedly on February 8th (a Sunday – and day of the 2009 BAFTAs – seems unlikely to me) but tickets are only availbale up to February 4th. Any ideas as to why?

Avatar Image says:

any idea if dan will be attending the london premiere of half blood prince?i think the Journey will commence filming after dh is done.i cant wait for equus this time around!and am sure dan has been real busy keeping fit and those promo pics look good!haha.

Avatar Image says:

Emma, highly unlikely Dan will attend the London Premiere.Unless he leaves for London right after Sunday performance,he would have to fly back right after the Preimiere ,Monday.Don’t know if that would be enough rest for him for the Tuesday 2:00 performance. But then he may find a way,but if you are going I would say don’t expect him there and if he does show up it will be a good surprise! :o)

The preview period is the period that allows not only the actors to get used to performing in front of an audience, but also for the creative team to make changes prior to the opening. With revivals they generally just give everyone a chance to make minor tweaks, but with new shows it can be an entire overhaul. Once the performance is “frozen” (i.e., no more changes), the press will be invited to view the show in preparation for their reviews (which they aren’t allowed to publish until the show reaches intermission on its opening night).

As for actors getting notes, that is not restricted to the preview period. An actor can receive performance notes up until even the last show. Funny thing though, is that a time not too long ago preview performances were actually cheaper to attend than regular performances. Long gone are those days. Also, Opening Night is generally reserved for the industry. Shows rarely actually sell tickets for the opening night. However, if they want to fill the house, a couple of days before the opening they start releasing tickets. You’ll notice that you can’t buy tickets for the 25th. But for those who want to try to attend opening night, check about a week before and every day up to and including opening. You never know what will be released!

Ummm….there is no 2:00pm performance of Equus on a Tuesday during its entire run.

Avatar Image says:

But there is a Tuesday performance—sorry about the time—we all make mistakes.

Avatar Image says:

I can’t imagine Dan not attending the HBP world premiere. He is the main star. If a performance is scheduled on the same day as the premiere, it’s likely Equus will use his understudy. This happens all the time on Broadway.

If you want to see Dan, it’s probably a good idea to stay away from performances near the HBP premiere. I got tickets for Late October and after reading all the great reviews for the West End show, I can’t wait!

Avatar Image says:

who would even wana see that it is scary it was even scary when he was in the bath tub in the fourth and he wasnt even naked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! scary!!!!

Avatar Image says:

Sj,nudity is something natural, for god sake!!is not scary!!

Avatar Image says:

i know this is off topic… but is leaky aware their countdown to the movie is way off… I wish it was coming out in 43 days… but that’s not true… ... ... sighs back on topic… I’m going to see this. I’m going to TRY to meet Daniel after…

Avatar Image says:

why do people get thrilled about “first to comment” and there is NO comment? Think of something to type since you’re not commenting on anything….....................

Avatar Image says:

Dan is expected to attend the Royal Premier of HP – that will take place on Monday, Dan will flight to London Sunday night and will be back Tuesday afternoon before 7pm for the next show.

Avatar Image says:

I’m really hoping that actual theater goers are there opening night, and that the theater isn’t filled with young giggling girls who are only there to see Dan’s naughty bits ;)

Avatar Image says:

Heh. Well if they are, they’ll be quite disappointed as his naughty bits are quite small. It will be amusing to see what kind of shenanigans occur throughout the Broadway run seeing as North Americans, on average, are crazy.

Avatar Image says:

Hmm….I heard average.

Avatar Image says:

Oh, and I have more to say, dear Author. Nice generalization about N. Americans. Bigoted much?

I think when people comment in the manner in which you did, both about Dan and a huge group of people in this case, it reveals more about the commentator than about the target.

Nothing wrong with Dan, nothing wrong with N. Americans. Not small, not crazy…just right.

Avatar Image says:

I agree mostly with Author: while not all crazy, N. American squeeling girly girls are only wanting to see this play for the “naughty bits” and are going to be less well-behaved than European girls. The story is hardly appropriate for any person under the age of 16 and if it wasn’t “Harry Potter” who was showing his naughty bits as part of the story, no kid would be begging for tickets to this play as an early Christmas gift from their parents. And those unsuspecting parents who think, “oh, it’s that fellow from the movies, how nice”, they should rent the movie and then decide if it’s appropriate for their children.

Avatar Image says:

Sheila, are you N. American?

Evidently you think a lot of us N. American parents are so stupid that we know nothing about anything. Give us a little credit. Oh, and stop indulging in silly generalizations. Many of the people who went to this play last year were far older than 12. Do you think teenybops are the only people who like him? You’re sadly mistaken if that’s what you think.

Avatar Image says:

PLANNED A TRIP TO NY WITH MY BFF JUST TO SEE THE PLAY! GOING FOR MY B-DAY WEEKEND AND I CAN’T WAIT…IT IS A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY TO SEE SOMETHING LIKE THIS WITH ACTORS WE ALL CARE ABOUT SO MUCH! EEEP!

Avatar Image says:

“Evidently you think a lot of us N. American parents are so stupid”

Ok I am n.American, and I work in a hotal. And I can say EVERY parent with kids in middle/grade school are stupid. You can not control your kids… yet we as the public that has to live in the area of the kids can not jit the kid. You think the public fill sorry for you but we fill sorry for the kid to have parents that can not put there foot down and exert some household law. Of course the parents with the most problems are those with kids in the public school system.

good one bebe!!

Avatar Image says:

I actually believe Daniel has been badly advised and shockingly managed to even consider a play like this. I am now worried about Daniel’s mental health.

Avatar Image says:

Why would you be worried about his mental health? The play isn’t disturbing or dark in the least bit. People just say that because they’re too ashamed/embarassed to admit how secretly aroused they were by it. It’s very sexual with a lt of erotic undertones. In fact, the part where they’re naked and simulate sex is the least arousing bit.

As far as his naughty bits go, the useful bit is ridiculously, embarassingly small (and circumcised) while the not so important bits attached to it are freakishly gigantic. And… this post will get deleted. Obviously.

And please, Americans on average ARE crazy. When daughters and their mothers used to try and sneak their way into getting close and personal with whichever one of the New Kids on the Block they fancied, they would literally offer to have mom and daughter threesoms with them. That is just sick and mental. Take That NEVER had similar stories like that to tell about their own fans in their tell alls. Between naked girls with Potter towels on, streakers, and the infamous American girl who ran up on stage and tried to hug him, this will no doubtedly be a very crazy venture. The fact that the address of both his NY apartments have been released as well will only make matters worse.

Avatar Image says:

I seriously can’t believe Dan Radcliffe was actually in that! It blows my mind!

Avatar Image says:

Not sure about where Author gets his information but Dan is not in fact circumcised. British boys rarely are. That’s really an American thing! I saw the London play three times so I know my information is correct! :-)

Avatar Image says:

I can’t believe this thread is still going. Leaky should be monitoring it, given some of the remarks on here.

Well, author, your comments (which you pretend are an argument) still reveal you to be ignorant and bigoted.
