We have a mix of bad and good news today regarding some of the upcoming Harry Potter conferences:

First the good news, as Terminus has announced a new Twenty-Fifth Band Competition for their Wrock Chicago event, the all-day wizard rock festival that will be held the day before the conference begins in August. This new competition is open to Wizarding Rock bands who have "at least five completed, recorded and publicly available songs based on J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series." The winning group will be the 25th band and complete the line-up for the all day Wizard Rock concert to be held August 6, 2008. All entries must be submitted by March 5, 2008. For more on the rules and how to enter, click here. Terminus will be held in Chicago, Illinois August 7-11, 2008.

Also, for those heading south this year for Portus, the Harry Potter symposium set for Dallas, Texas July 10-13, 2008, be sure to check out the latest edition of the Portal newsletter. The conference has details on a special pre-event gathering to be held February 23 in Dallas where you can meet some of those already registered for Portus. For more on this conference, click here.

Finally, there is some bad news for those hoping to attend the Sectus 09 Harry Potter conference next year in the UK. Unfortunately, due to personal reasons the chairperson was unable to continue leading the event, and without a suitable replacement available, the event that was to be held in Wales June 26-29 of 2009 is now canceled. Refunds are being offered to those who had already registered for the event; for more on this situation, please click here.

Pity about the Sectus 09 event. I’m surprised there is no one else suitable for the role of organising the event. Perhaps there are other reasons compounded and thus simpler to state it this way. Anyway, those attending the Chicago events, have fun!

I want to go to Terminus so badly! However, I’m only 17 and no one will chaparone me…

Too bad about Sectus, I hope if you were planning to go you can go to Terminus or Portus and still have a good time! :D

I was disappointed to hear that Sectus had been cancelled, as it was going to be my first time at a HP con, but having organised conventions in other fandoms before, I know how difficult it can be. I’d love to go to Terminus, but unless flights come down from £560, that’s not going to be happening. Otherwise I’d chaperone you, Hufflepuff Lady!

I’m also trying to get flights or less than £560, Emma The price sould come down in a few months, so hang on in there. We should let each other know if we find a good deal. So sad about Sectus, I hope another HP conference get organised in the UK soon.

To Sophie and others, The Accio 2008 Conference in Oxford is still on. We are just waiting for confirmation from our programme presenters to make another announcement. We are not quite full yet. See www.accio.org.uk

I am so disappointed the Sectus conference has been cancelled. My husband and I were planning a vacation around the event, with the conference being the finale. Oh, well…maybe it’s time to think about attending one of the US conferences this year….

Wahoo! Finally something interesting is happening in Chicago! I know I know, Chicago is a big city with a lot of stuff going on, but I lived here for over 20 years and usually things like this conference go to LA or NY not chicago. I love that I don’t even have to go anywhere. Now if only I can convince some Harry Potter loving friends to shell out the money to come with me…
