We have some more great movie news this morning, as it has now been confirmed that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will be shown in IMAX, released the same day as the film opens on November 21, 2008. Also of note to fans is word that sections of the film such as the dramatic events at Hogwarts and the finale of the movie will be shown in 3D, just as parts of “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” were shown in IMAX 3D.

Thanks to Coming Soon.net for the heads up!

I really want an Imax near me! It’s gonna me so exciting to see the last part in 3D

Avatar Image says:

Oh!!! Pity there aren’t any Imaxes in Florence Italy!!!! I’d love to see it in 3D!

Avatar Image says:

oh my, I do hope the cave scene is one of the 3D bits!! That would be awesome!

Avatar Image says:

Interesting. I hope the climax of the film is longer than the OotP’s one which still was 20 minutes long and for thes eminutes it was fantastic but we all wanted a lot more. I hope the climax of HBP is longer and better than this in the book because I’d love to see the Order and the D.A. fighting the Death Eaters in the castle and at the grounds and of course the entire sequences at the Astronomy Tower, Hagrid’s hut and the Cave which is going to be breathtaking with all the Inferi and the mysterious environment. I really hope the scenes will surpass my expectations and I cannot wait to enjoy them on screen.Imax 3d I’m coming!

Avatar Image says:

I love all this HBP news… hopefully this means we’re getting the teaser trailer/poster soon. __

Avatar Image says:

Wow! Yes!! This is such a great week, we’re getting so much movie news, I love it!!!

Avatar Image says:

i stil hope theres an IMAX in adelaide (australia) somewhere, because whatever part they do in 3D would be amazing. I hope it’s the cave/astronomy tower scene/s. that would be so amazing.

Avatar Image says:

Does any one know any cinema which will do the same in the uk?

Avatar Image says:

Great news! We have a new IMAX opening nearby and I’m sooo happy they are showing HBP in IMAX 3D. I had to travel some distance to see OOTP on IMAX, but it was worth it. This time I’ll just have to go more than once!

Avatar Image says:

Don’t be so excited about your new IMAX – not every one is able to show the 3D movies. You might want to inquire to the theatre to see if they will be equipped for 3D. Our local IMAX isn’t set up for 3D and I’m sorry about that, but I understand. The projectors capable of showing the 3D feature is an additional million dollars.

In a way I’m sorry that HBP will have the climax in 3D. I think the OOTP suffered because the Voldemort vs Dumbledore effects were really designed to be seen in 3D and the result in 2D doesn’t make sense. The whole thing about the glass shards and sand probably looks amazing in 3D but they aren’t elements from the battle in the book and weren’t exciting in 2D. I’d gladly given up the 3D to have the fountain statues play their part as in the book. I hope that the effects at the end of HBP are more incidentally 3D and closer to the book.

Avatar Image says:

Dude…its so not worth it to see it in 3D. I remember watching order in 3D and the effects were so distracting… “OOoo…prophecy…IN THREE DEE

Those of you who dont live near an imax aren’t really missing out on much. Really.

@thegriffpuff

There’s definitely one in London, near Waterloo bridge, that’s where I went for OotP. I thought there was one in Manchester too, maybe Glasgow, Birmingham?? Not sure. There were supposed to be 12 new ones planned in 2004 but it’s hard to find a site that lists them (I’m looking as I write).

Tip: when you book tickets book seats dead centre and half way up or towards the back the auditorium. Otherwise you get a crick in your neck and go cross eyed!

Avatar Image says:

Class! this means the final order vs death eaters in the castle is gonna be so cool and better be better than the whole flying around thing in OOTP. Yeah good point thegriffpuff does ANYONE know of one in the UK

Avatar Image says:

oh thanks Anne, I’m gonna browse around

@thegriffpuff

I found this dated 16 Nov 2007 relating to Beowulf 3D, from http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=109&STORY=/www/story/11-13-2007/0004704736&EDATE=

Bradford – IMAX Cinema at National Media Museum Glasgow – Glasgow Science Centre London – BFI London IMAX Cinema Manchester – ODEON IMAX Cinema Manchester

Avatar Image says:

you’re right one in Waterloo Road one in Odeon Manchester

Avatar Image says:

ah man… of course im going to be at school--in a town that doesn’t have imax… :(

perhaps i’ll just go home for that weekend. :-)

Avatar Image says:

Cool! All we need now is some pictures and a trailer. :)

Avatar Image says:

thegriffpuff, the UK IMAX cinemas do it too. I went to see OotP on the day of it’s release in the IMAX in Glasgow. I’m definitely go back there for HBP!

Avatar Image says:

It seems that the IMAX theater that was at 3 Cinema Place in Adelaide, Australia has been closed down. I guess that means that the closest one is in Melbourne.

Avatar Image says:

When I saw OotP in 3D, it blew me away! I thought all films should be in 3d as you’re even more submerged in a film, as if you’re there. Looking forward to it!!

Avatar Image says:

Here is a list of IMAX venues worldwide. Note that some of them may not be able to show a 3D film:

Avatar Image says:

Wow!

I am SO going to see that on opening night! i think there is an IMAX on Long Island. Dones anyone know for sure?

If not I’ll just spend the day in lovely NYC!

Avatar Image says:

@ccm&hp I wasn’t really impressed with the 3D either. It felt poorly done. Just the veil was impressive in 3D. The tall IMAX screen was nice though.

Avatar Image says:

Well… I can’t wait any longer to see official movie stills or studio photos… I mean new characters, new sets, etc… like they did with Umbridge and OOTP. I want to see Broadbent as Slughorn!!! And i’m really depressed there are no IMAX theaters where i live (center France)

Avatar Image says:

I think the nearest one from me is about 100 miles away so I might see it

Avatar Image says:

Thanks guys. I live in London so the one in Waterloo might be the best one.

Avatar Image says:

Yay! What a fun bit of news to wake up to!

Teaser trailer soon plz, kthxbai.

Avatar Image says:

Its final; Im skipping school and waiting on line for a ticket! HP fans can be so irrational. I mean who else but us would get so awsomely excited about an IMAX movie? O well. C’est la vie d’une admiratrice de HP! sorry, i couldnt resist.

Can’t wait for trailers, pics, interviews and all the goodies i know Leaky will provode us with! Leaky you rock!

LIVE, LOVE, HARRY POTTER!

Avatar Image says:

NO!!!!! This is BAD! If they’re making DH 3D, they’re going to film it so people are reaching at the camera, and doing stupid things like that. And action sequences will be blurry, in 3D and IMAX. This is horrible….I really really hope they don’t do this.

Avatar Image says:

OH MY GOSH! I hope that I get to watch it in IMAX. I doubt it though. :( Still, I`ll keep my fingers crossed. =)

Avatar Image says:

Actually I saw OotP in several formats, including 3D and non-3D Imax, and the 20 minute 3D scene was great and made perfect sense in all of them. I just hated the silly 3D icon they flashed, especially at the end of the sequnce since it happened while Harry was trying to process the events at the MoM in his dorm.

It was a distraction at an inappropriate time, imo. I feel it might be the same for HBP. sigh Nevertheless, I look forward to seeing the new film in Imax 3D again.

Avatar Image says:

Awesome! I’m way excited. This is just going to be too cool. I dragged my mom to a theater that wasn’t exactly “close” to see it again in IMAX format for the 3D scenes and I thought it was really neat. I can’t wait for it all again.

If you are looking for an IMAX near you, just google IMAX Theaters and it should give you the officially IMAX website. That will hook you up with all of the theaters that it has. I was looking for one myself at the time (I was in New Hampshire, US and there is only one or two in the state which constituted a drive) and I’ll be going back to the site again when HBP comes out (I’ve now moved to Los Angeles).

Avatar Image says:

i love H.P!!!!!

Avatar Image says:

WOW, I saw U at the imax and it was awesome, can’t wait.

Avatar Image says:

the hogwarts fight scenes arent that long. Most of the fighting is being done while the DD-draco scene is happening. The only time we see any real fighting is when Harry and Snape are racing down the castle.

Avatar Image says:

I loved the OOTP 3D. When they flew on the threstrals (sp?) it was amazing. I don’t think they had much of that “let’s point this at the screen so it will come out at you” tricks at all. Also, whoever said to get seats dead center and as high as you can is correct. If you get seats down low it is a totally different experience. Also, whoever said to make sure you IMAX shows 3D is correct also. I have 3 IMAX theaters within 20 minutes from me but 1 was not capable of showing the 3D version.

Avatar Image says:

Actually there’s an IMAX in Barcelona but they only showed PoA and missed out OotP!! I don’t understand! It would have been very succesful! I hope they’re showing one 3D copy for Barcelona’s IMAX!

Avatar Image says:

Hi all . Nice News from TLC . but I hope to See this great movie in IMAX near me i’m in egypt and i think they are building an IMAX near me :) I hope they finish it before the time of releasing HPB i hope . i hope

Avatar Image says:

If you want to go IMAX go look site and will find where you are near. ;)

Avatar Image says:

I saw OotP in 3D in Birmingham, England. The sound quality was definitely superior to our usual cinema, so that was a bonus.

Avatar Image says:

I just LOVED the OotP Imax. I felt just like I entered the movie, I was in the front row and it was like standing in the ministry facing an extreemly imposing Lucious Malfoy. Whew! Problem was, that was the first time I saw it (had to drive 2 hours) every other viewing (at my local cinema and on DVD just couldn’t compare. Overall though, I will do it again for sure:)

Avatar Image says:

i hope that its better than OotP cos it was a bit of an anti climax tbh, but then again it was my 7th time seeing it so i duno, just make it worth the trip to london.

Avatar Image says:

Well, it’s always good to get news about the HBP movie, but I have to admit, I’m getting antsy for something a little bigger and meatier. You know, like hi-res images, or maybe even a teaser trailer. They’ve been filming since last September (or was it October?), so surely the WB must have enough on film by now to give us something. Right?

I know, I know, I’m being impatient and ungrateful. But still… as nice as it is to know that HBP will be shown in Imax and 3-D, it would be a lot more exciting if we could get some pictures of what we’ll actually be SEEING in Imax and 3-D!

::goes back to trying to be patient::

Avatar Image says:

Thats awesome news!!! will surely watch on IMAX !!!!!

Avatar Image says:

I can’t wait! I live around the corner form an IMAX that always has the HP movies the day of release!!!

My kids are going to love this!

Avatar Image says:

Bring on the swirling ring of 3D FIRE!!!!! YESS!!! But on a serious note, I hope they stop the 3D for the lightning struck tower, because 3D can be quite distracting, and that moment should focus on the emotional imensity of the scene, and not the special effects. I will probably do what I did for OotP: see it 2D at midnight and 3D at 11:30am after a nap and the theatres reopen.

Avatar Image says:

I hope it comes to the IMAX in my city. I don’t think we’ve gotten OOTP yet. If we have, they advertised it poorly. We didn’t get GOF until May after it was released. So, I have yet to see these in IMAX and there’s a theater half an hour from my house! It makes no sense.

Avatar Image says:

I cannot wait to see HalfBloodPrince on IMAX. OOTP was amazing in Imax 3D, and I can’t wait to see what gets thrown at us in Half Blood Prince :)

Avatar Image says:

ootp was AMAZING in imax/3D! i can’t wait to see hbp! luckily there’s an imax only 20 minutes from where i live. YAY!!!!!!

Avatar Image says:

This is not going to do ANYTHING for the film. OOTP was a small film acting like a big film. OOTP is much more pychological about Harry’s struggle. HPB is much a look in to Voldemort’s psyche. OOTP in Imax was a disappointment. Seeing it in smaller screen was much better. HPB is similar in its style. It doesn’t belong in an Imax.

Avatar Image says:

I am happy is going to be my first movied in IMAX i cant harldy wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Avatar Image says:

WIZARD i live in las vegas we have like six imaxes here WAHOOOO… im counting down the days literally i think im at about 264 days until release or around there

Avatar Image says:

midnight show this time?

Avatar Image says:

Weeeeeee! Just read this today….thank goodness we have IMAX in the Philippines!

Avatar Image says:

It’s not going to happen, but could you guys imagine a Quidditch game in 3D? BLUDGER!!! :-D

Personally, I didn’t think the 3D scenes in Phoenix were that great. It wasn’t bad, either, but it didn’t blow me away or anything.
