The Press Association of the UK is reporting that the first novel in J. K. Rowling’s series, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” was named the third ‘Top Cultural Moment’ of the past twenty-one years in Britain via a new survey. Conducted to mark the 21st anniversary of Hay Literary Festival, the poll placed the 1997 publication of the book behind the 1990 World Cup performance by the Three Tenors and the 1997 opening of a replica of the historic Globe theater on the list. The Hay Literary Festival is open now and runs through June 1st in the town of Hay-On-Wye in Wales, United Kingdom. Congratulations to Jo!

Awesome! I think it’s great that the publication has now become a significant part of British history! Like Edward said – congrats to Jo =)

I just wanted to point out that these were named as the top cultural moments of the last 21 years, not the top moments generally, as this report sort of seems to indicate (by omission)! This is in no way to belittle Jo’s amazing achievement, which is… well, amazing! Congratulations to her!

Well done. It deserves the recognition. The whole series was unique in publishing history, and in British history in particular. And thanks also should go to Jo Rowling, David Heyman, Chris Columbus and Warner brothers for agreeing to an all-British cast for the film, which could have been turned into yet another mid-Atlantic piece of transcultural pap by directors like Spielberg. Congratulations to everybody involved!
